AARKTICA SINGS PRINE ❄️ | 𝐍𝐄𝐖! Out today is Aarktica’s new single “Christmas In Prison” by one of our most beloved songwriters and voices John Prine.
For this shimmery shoegaze folk/country version, I’m accompanied on vocals by the magnificent Kendall Jane Meade, with keyboards and production by Charles Newman (Cottage Sounds Unlimited). On drums is the legendary Butch Norton (Lucinda Williams).
It’s both sad and uplifting, a lilting winter waltz to bring us into the holiday season. Turn off those Andy Williams albums, light a fire and throw a little Aarktica on the stereo this season…

Listening With Intent

"Hey, I didn't hear that before"
These days, the first person to critically scrutinize mixes in a controlled environment is often the mastering engineer, who is expected to not only make the overall project sound amazing, but also address issues missed during the mixing stage:
Technical issues can often be addressed (or at least made acceptable to the client), but variations in performance dynamics and mix balances previously overlooked suddenly become noticeable for the first time - resulting in the time and expense of mix recalls after the initial mastering.
The simplest solution is also the cheapest:
Take the time to carefully listen to the mixes in a quiet environment free from the distractions of people / phones / screens, ambient noises, etc.
Mute smart phones and put them in another room (you'll live). Turn off, or fully darken computer screens.
Sit in the speaker/room sweet spot. Check the mix on full-range headphones to help catch overlooked technical gremlins or performance issues before sending mixes to mastering.
The result will be better sounding masters, less stress, and less expense.
A little careful listening is the cheapest and most effective production tool around.
