We work on educating the public through an indigenous lens, that shares awareness and information from community members’ perspectives. We provide an accessible platform through digital media outlets with open and honest discussions of underrepresented narratives. I've expanded the podcast to the KXCI Community Radio website titled "Cultivating Indigenous Voices." This is a 30 minute podcast show

with the same focus as the Tohono O'odham Young Vocies podcast. Being able to expand the podcast allows me to reach a more broader audience sharing indigenous topics, stories, and involvement in the Tucson community. Today is Raymond Mattia’s 59th birthday. Tomorrow, May 18th is the one year anniversary of his wrongful death by border patrol. We had the privilege of joining his family and community supporters for a press conference as they presented their workings on a wrongful death lawsuit.

We stand in solidarity with the family and applaud their strength and resilience in this tragedy, and we will continue to amplify the voices and stories of those who have also been impacted by border patrol induced violence.

“They want us to give up. This is the next step, but not the last step” - Niece of Raymond

MMIP stands for Missing and Murdered Indigenous people. It is a movement dedicated to combat violence against native people due to the disporportionate rates of violence against our communities and especially women/girls.

Although women and girls bear the brunt of violence and human trafficking, they are not alone in this. This crisis affects individuals of all ages, encompassing men, boys, infants, and the elderly.

To help bring awareness to this crisis, we wanted to share some local resources that may help deepen your understanding of the depth of this issue. In addition, how to get help or get involved.

🛴 📢 Indigenous Woman Still Coming Through! We are so happy to have been able to attend Pima County Recorder's Office Gabriella Cázares-Kelly meet and greet fundraising event. We hope that you will join us in supporting her by voting for her in her re-election.

She made history as the first Native American to be elected to a Countywide seat in Pima County in 2020, and has then worked tirelessly to fight for voting accessibility in Native/rural communities and for underrepresented voices in our county.

We are so happy to have environmentalist DeShawn Davis as a guest to speak about his work as a Next Generation Ranger at Saguaro National Park and his involvement in Eco Truths for Indigenous Youth.

The critical role we have as Native/Indigenous people to protect sacred sights, nature, animals, etc. is important especially when working in the National Park Service and we are so grateful to know that such passionate and dedicated individuals like Deshawn are taking part in these spaces.

Listen in to learn more about his work in exploring traditional O’odham Jewedga (O’odham lands) in Southern Arizona. 🌵

We are so happy to announce a new collaboration with the Mexican American Heritage and History Museum, thanks to Alisha Vasquez, co-director of the museum. 🎉

Today we had the pleasure of joining Alisha on a tour of the museum, also known as the Sosa-Carrillo House.

We are so grateful to be apart of this project where we will be working with Alisha to create an exhibit that displays and recognizes Tohono O’odham history and our connections to the land.

As former members of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), the team wanted to acknowledge the importance and legacy of AISES! Recently, podcast team member Bre had the opportunity to attend the 2023 conference held in Spokane, Washington.

“For my first time going to an AISES conference, I was absolutely blown away by the ambition of the people I met there and it was so inspiring overall to see our people come together to learn and support one another. In this post I wanted to highlight a few scholars I met who shared their experiences with us, thank you all!” - Bre

Our Story

To my knowledge this is the first O’odham podcast show which began in 2016!

I’m a tribal member of the Tohono O'odham Nation who grew up in the villages of Ghaka and Ak-Chin and currently reside in Chukson (Tucson). I was inspired to create a podcast where I could have some discussions on good music & local topics within the native community. Also, interested in networking, building relationships & interviewing locals who are active in their communities. In 2016 I created Tohono O’odham Young Voices Podcast focusing more on telling O’odham stories, history, politics, culture, etc. Since that time I've expanded the podcast to KXCI Community Radio titled "Cultivating Indigenous Voices." This is a 30 minute podcast show with the same focus to reach a more broader audience sharing indigenous topics, histories, stories, and community involvement in Chukson (Tucson).

So not to cause any confusion I currently host and produce both podcasts on two different platforms. Whereas the T.O. Young Voices Podcast show is uncensored and gives me more freedom to share whatever topics and music based on Spreaker.com, a podcast hosting site. So it is on this page where I represent and share both podcast shows. Thank you for the support and for tuning in!
