Tonight at 9pm we go back to 2018, when Art Week Exeter hosted a Longplayer listening post in St Martin’s church on Cathedral Green.

Longplayer is a 1000-year-long musical composition by Jem Finer. Alongside the listening post, Art Week Exeter commissioned a new musical composition inspired by Longplayer (and borrowing some of its mathematics), called Shortplayer IV.

In this programme, Exeter-based composers Emma Welton and Simon Belshaw talk to Phonic FM’s Jez Winship about developing Shortplayer IV; the piece is performed in full; then Jem Finer can be heard in conversation with Devon-based sound artist and radio-maker Alice Armstrong.

This project was produced for Art Week Exeter 2018 with support from University of Exeter Arts & Culture.

New to Devonstream: ‘Shame’ by Fable (ғᴀʙʟᴇ]).

Shame is the fourth single from the upcoming debut album of Devon born singer-songwriter, Fable. Having toured with rock legends The Cult, and performed twice at Glastonbury Festival, Fable took some time out after a personal tragedy, but has returned with her quirky brand of genre bending pop. (Thanks to Chris Hawkins] for bringing this one to our attention!)

New to Devonstream: ‘Moulding Heaven With Earth’ by Abrasive Trees (Abrasive Trees]). The band’s Matthew Rochford says: “Moulding Heaven With Earth is, in part, about how we try to line everything up perfectly in our lives – and how this never quite works. But it’s also about some deeper truths about our potential as human beings. It was produced by Lucy Board and Matthew Board from shoegaze/dream pop band Pale Blue Eyes ().”

New to Devonstream: ‘Broken-Feathered Bird’ by Katherine Olver (Kate Olver]). Katherine says: “I wrote this in 2021, when I was living with my boyfriend in a flat in Plymouth. It wasn’t supposed to be a collaboration but it turns out he’s pretty good with lyrics. I was born in Plymouth, where this song was written, and I'm very lucky to have ‘grown up’ on the edge of Dartmoor. I've since been been stolen away by a Cornishman and now raise my young baby in Cornwall. My heart lives in Cornwall but my soul will always belong to Deb’n.”

New to Devonstream: Music Machine 26 and 28 by Exeter artist .

“Music Machine 28 was originally intended for live performance using a solo wind instrument and computer. The first program displays the note to play, how long to play it for and then how long to wait before playing the next note. The second program plays prerecorded sound files. This version is adapted for string quartet; each performer is given only one instruction to play a particular note for a certain length of time. The notes are from an 8 bar chord progression, the only time you hear a chord played as one is at the end of the piece. Performed by Julie Hill (violin & viola) and Hilary Boxer ('cello)”

“Music Machine 26 consists of a slow, sustained chord progression played by the quartet. The progression is played three times. During the first play through a computer records a number of clips of varying lengths. In the following two repeats of the progression the computer plays back those clips over the live quartet at random times. Performed by Julie Hill (violin & viola) and Hilary Boxer ('cello)”

Your sounds of Devon, #2: A tributary stream of the East Okement south of Okehampton, 21 November 2021.

Share _your_ sounds of Devon on Devonstream. It’s easy to get involved:

1. Capture a sound clip – between 30 seconds and a minute should be enough – you can use the voice notes app on your phone, or record directly into Instagram, Messenger or WhatsApp.

2. Share your sound clip with us – email [email protected], send it to us () on Instagram or Facebook, or WhatsApp us on 07400 920950.

3. Tell us a bit about the clip: who you are; when and where you recorded it; what the sound means to you. Maybe even share a photo of the place where you captured the audio.

Sounds can be so much more evocative than pictures, so next time you take out your phone to grab a selfie, why not capture some audio too?

Video description: A still image of a small fast-flowing stream cascading over rocks in a wooded valley on the edge of Dartmoor. Tree trunks and exposed rocks are covered in moss; the ground is covered with fallen leaves in autumn tones of yellow and brown, with small green ferns peeping through. The image is overlaid with an animated soundwave that responds to the audio in the clip. The audio contains the sound of the water in the stream cascading over the rocks.
