Milestone Press Your guidebook source for hiking, bicycling, motorcycling and more in the Smoky Mountains and Blue Ridge of North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina

Milestone Press is a small, independent book publisher operating in the shadow of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, in the heart of the region our titles describe. Our first guidebook was a mountain bike trail guide, published in 1992. We now produce guidebooks on hiking, motorcycling, and general sightseeing in the outdoors. Our staff and editors are all experienced outdoorsmen and women who k

now the region and stay close to the material. We are dedicated to producing guidebooks that are clear, concise, and give adventurers what they need to have their own personal experience of the outdoors. In 2014 we released Great Hikes of the Southern Appalachians, a mobile app which adapts over 300 hikes from the books we publish. The Great Hikes app lets you carry all your essential trail info on your phone, and can help you find and select a hike, get to the trailhead, and find your way on the trail using your phone's GPS function. Once you've downloaded a hike, it functions without wi-fi or a data connection. The app itself is free; each hike is a 99-cent in-app purchase. We invite you to try before you buy--there are a number of free hikes to sample.

Happy 81st Birthday to the Appalachian Trail. It begins in Georgia!

81 years ago today, the Appalachian Trail was completed. The trail was first conceived in 1921 and built by private citizens. A 2,180-mile long footpath that stretches from central Maine to northern Georgia, the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (or A.T.) traverses the scenic, wooded, pastoral, wild, and culturally resonant lands of the Appalachian Mountains. It was one of the first in the National Trails System. Whether you're looking for a short day hike or thru-hiking the entire length, it's a great trail to . Photo courtesy of Serge Skiba.
