Something different for tonight's programming--classic jungle music radio from London, UK's pirate station Kool FM from 1996.
Most know of the 1960s pirate radio ships and the vibrant pirate radio scene back then, but the mid 90s-mid 00s also had a boom of free radio stations, most of them being house, trance and jungle music stations.
It's a part of the rich and vibrant history of pirate radio that WHAR celebrates. Understand that, at the end of the day, there's a LOT of people who hate free radio stations. They think we are stealing, or lawless anarchists. Nothing could be further from the truth. Free radio has to exist as a balance to the corporate drivel that takes up space on the public airwaves, which according to the FCC themselves, belongs to the public.
After someone tried to criticize our station earlier today, we feel it is vital for us to retort simply with- p**s off! We constantly ensure a clean and harmonics-free signal, low SWR, and no interference with emergency communications or other legal signals. After nine years, this is literally the first time we've received such criticism, which said in part that "they are broadcasting anti-american communist propaganda".
The freedom that comes with jungle music, part of what you're hearing tonight on WHAR, echoes our own stance as a radio station. We are going to air what we want, what the people want, and what reflects the glory of the international working class through speech and music. I promise this loser who posted to us, that we do more good for the betterment of public broadcasting than anything else on air in our region.

In two days, July 17th, we will celebrate our 9th anniversary on air. If you told me that WHAR would be on air still going strong nine years from when we first signed on July 17th, 2012, I simply wouldn't believe you.

ALSO ALSO: With the threat of severe thunderstorms tonight here in the WHAR FM listening area, our FM signal is off air till tomorrow.
We are testing on 1560kHz since WFME is off air. 1110kHz is WBT at night, a 50kW blowtorch which totally kills our nighttime signal. 1560, we hope, will be a bit better. We're doing these tests now because as summer rolls around and puts too much heat stress on our FM transmitter, we will be on MW more often than in the winter.

Another quick post here. We started using the positioner "free radio for the free thinker" way back in 2013. It was a different time in my own life and felt it reflected who I was as the owner of WHAR.
But times have changed and WHAR must reflect my beliefs and aide in the fight against far-right talk radio.
It's hard to get rid of that positioner as it was in use for over 8 years, but we're excited for what lays ahead with WHAR FM, Free Socialist Radio.
We are announcing our new name:
89.1 FM WHAR Free Socialist Radio
This better reflects our beliefs as a radio station, and frankly, shortens our name.
New name, same radio station. And keep on listening and supporting WHAR! Thank you!

Time for another quick station update:
Boy has the last year been quite a testing time to say the least. We've been running and sounding better than ever though. WHAR still remains on 89.1FM, but we're not always on air due to transmitter maintenance and just periods of rest for it.
We're basically taking it day by day and not really making long term plans for the station. We have some plans for a talk show that may soon debut, and the Vinyl Frontier is sticking to the Sunday nights at 9 schedule. Red Banner Radio hopefully will make a needed come back as well.
