The sun setting on our last day on the island.
This has been an incredible trip with even more incredible people. I have made so many great memories and seen even greater things. For now, it's back to chasing the sunsets of South Africa.

Day 2 on the included a tour of the mangrove forests around the islands. These lush, tangled ecosystems protect our shorelines, provide vital habitat for countless species, and help combat climate change. 🌏

Deforestation, pollution, and climate change are putting these vital ecosystems in danger.

We rolled up our sleeves, planted saplings, cleaned up our shores, and rallied for change. Through collective effort, we played our little part in breathing life back into these vital ecosystems.

In case anyone's wondering where I've been... We're experiencing , a first-of-its-kind private paradise off the coast of Cartagena, Colombia, focused on eco-tourism. The island hopes to encourage us to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with nature. Stay tuned for many more updates on what we get up to, the daily activities around the island, lessons on sustainability, and countless wish-you-were-here scenes.

I think we are at war with our expectations. Too often we measure ourselves by our shortcomings.
All the could-have-beens and should-have-dones. We are heavy with our own imagined failures.

Yet the further I keep going, the more I am starting to believe that the best possible expectation I could have for this life is simply to live it, because things are never exactly as you picture them anyway. Sometimes not as grand and sometimes even better than you imagined.

When I look back, I realize some of the best moments from this year (and my life as a whole) are the ones that came up unexpectedly. So, I’m learning that it’s best to not have any expectations at all, to appreciate the experience for what it is, and take it second by second.

Perhaps we (I) can learn to laugh and recognize the absurdity of our need to pretend we’re not both terrified and alive and overwhelmingly in love with everything at the same time. Perhaps we can learn to open up to life and all that you do not know and cannot control.

The more I color outside of the lines, the more clearly a picture emerges of a life I am willing to live. We all get to do that while we’re here. We get to keep going. Lucky us.

It’s hard work, this being human. What if we could learn to love it all? All our hopes and disappointments. Praising our heights reached as well as our marks missed. Seeing our so-called failings as successful attempts at stretching beyond what we were capable of the day before, even if we didn’t get there. That we try at all.

Because right now, trying is all that I’m doing. I’m moving through time and space with my own mixture of klutz and grace. I’m breathing through all the mistakes and worst-case-scenarios and crying through many forgotten and buried, but body-trapped, mishaps.

The more I live it, the more I’m starting to feel that life isn’t about achieving. It’s not about getting or having or even keeping. It’s about maintaining a willingness. To bend. To continue. To accept. To hope. To trust. To get up when we don’t feel like it. To keep trusting. To keep going. To stubbornly insist on seeing the good that lies in things. To let the difficulties turn into valuable lessons.

You should know that right now, I’m not achieving. Not in the this-will-look-good-on-LinkedIn way anyway. But I am doing work that I can’t put on a resume. Luckily, I don’t really write resumes anymore anyway. So I pour myself another cup of coffee, read Emerson’s thoughts on success one more time and remind myself that I am still very young and that I am still learning how to live.
. .

“What is success?
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate the beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch Or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.”

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

I read a quote today that I quite liked:

“Africa gives me a perspective of what's real and what's not real. So I go back to Africa to both lose myself and gain awareness of myself. Every time I go back, it doesn't take long for me to get caught into a very different thing. A very different sense of myself. It's a melting pot, southern Africa. You find these cultural collisions that result in art and music, and it's pretty amazing.”

I feel like so many people around me are going through such massive life changes right now, so I’m leaving this piece by Cheryl Strayed here (*slightly edited) for those who might need the reminder:

There’s a line by the Italian writer Carlo Levi that reads: “The future has an ancient heart.”

I love it because it expresses with such grace and economy what is certainly true—that who we become is born of who we most primitively are; that we both know and cannot possibly know what it is we’ve yet to make manifest in our lives.

I think it’s a useful sentiment for you to reflect upon when the future likely feels the opposite of ancient, when instead it feels like a Lamborghini that’s pulled up to the curb while every voice around demands you get in and drive.

No matter how scared you are, just know that there is so much ahead that’s worth seeing; so much behind you can’t identify in this moment, at top speed.

Close your eyes and remember everything you already know. Let whatever mysterious starlight that guided you this far, guide you onward into whatever crazy beauty awaits.

And remember: you are so god damned young. Which means about eight of the ten things you have decided about yourself will over time prove to be false anyway. The other two things will prove to be so true that you’ll look back in twenty years and laugh when thinking back on a time that you might’ve thought of giving them up.

The most terrible and beautiful and interesting things happen in a life. Whatever happens to you belongs to you. Make it yours. It makes you, you. I have learned this over and over and over again.

I’m looking at this current moment in my life. How familiar it feels, and how utterly unknown. It was everything I intended and yet still I was surprised by what I got.

I hope you will be surprised and knowing at once. I hope you’ll always have love. I hope you’ll have days of ease and a good sense of humor. I hope you look back in twenty years and exclaim “You know, I wouldn’t take any of it back.” (You probably won’t)

{ESSAY} For those in their twenties - Part 3 of 3 🖊
As I wrap up these pieces, know that there are so many things you can’t understand yet. Your life will be a great and continuous unfolding.

The seemingly useless days will add up to something. The sh*tty waitressing jobs. The (hopefully) multiple dates you went on. The long meandering walks. The hours spent reading and wondering about s*x and God and whether you should get that tattoo or not (do it). These things are your becoming.

My twenties have been more about undoing as much as they’ve been for anything else. Choosing new. Deciding otherwise. Shedding layers that have taken me away from who I really am.

I hope you ask yourself: “What do I want now?” every time it occurs to you to do so. I hope you learn that there is only one way to guide your life; by consistently focusing on the next right step.

Start to trust yourself. Start to believe.
Those two feet of yours are going to get you very far, so don’t doubt them.
Take a deep breath. It’s your time.
Go get ‘em baby. ❤️
