The lead singer of the Morgan Heritage band, Peter Anthony Morgan has died.
His family announced his passing on social media on Sunday. Morgan Heritage was a Grammy-winning Jamaican reggae band formed in 1994 by five children of reggae artist Denroy Morgan, namely Peter “Peetah” Morgan, Una Morgan, Roy “Gramps” Morgan, Nakhamyah “Lukes” Morgan, and Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” Morgan. They have toured internationally and released a number of reggae albums.

Guyana on Tuesday urged the United Nations' highest court to call for a halt to parts of a Venezuelan referendum that seeks to create a new Venezuelan state in Guyana’s entire region — more than two thirds of its national territory.

It is a significant escalation in frictions between the countries that have increased since oil exploration operations by ExxonMobil and other companies in offshore areas in 2015.

Guyana boasts oil reserves of at least 10 billion barrels (more per capita than Brunei, Kuwait or the United Arab Emirates). The country last week announced a "significant" new oil discovery in Essequibo and said it had awarded bids to eight companies to drill for crude in its waters.

The Venezuelan government maintains that Guyana does not have jurisdiction to grant concessions in maritime areas off the Essequibo.

The UN court has ruled the case is admissible and that it has jurisdiction. A legally binding decision is likely years away, but a decision on the request discussed Tuesday will likely be issued within weeks.

Last week, the Caribbean Community (Caricom) said Venezuela's planned referendum "has no validity, bearing or standing in international law" adding in a statement it "earnestly hopes that Venezuela is not raising the prospect of using force or military means."

The Caribbean region today lost one of its most beloved daughters of music and culture in Francine Edwards, better known as Singing Francine.

While born in Barbados on February 13th 1943, Edwards would move to Trinidad & Tobago at a young age and become a pioneering force in music, particularly in the beloved genres of calypso and parang. She would also become well known for how she addressed social issues through her music, and over the course of her career, become a shining example of how the linkages run deep throughout our Caribbean family.

With a powerful voice, Edwards helped define the early calypso scene, and would go on to win the National Calypso Queen competition in Trinidad & Tobago in 1972, 1973, 1981 and 1983.

It is no stretch for me to say that Singing Francine's music is timeless, as I know all Barbadians will be familiar with her music, with the sounds of "Parang Parang" echoing throughout communities across the island during the Christmas period. I am certain her contributions to these genres will never be forgotten.

In addition to her many accomplishments in Trinidad and Tobago, Francine was also proud of her Barbadian heritage and frequently spoke about her love for her homeland.

On behalf of the Government, and all people of Barbados, I send thoughts and condolences to her family, loved ones, and all those who knew and admired her throughout the region.
Singing Francine will be deeply missed, but also deeply remembered for her many accomplishments and for the joy she brought to so many people through her music and social commentary. May her spirit rest in peace.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude on receiving the Hummingbird Gold National award of Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹🥇this weekend!!!

I am humbled and wish to dedicate this honor to my family, my parents Elizabeth and Winston Montano who set me on this path and without whom I would not stand proud here in this moment. Their love, guidance and support throughout the years have absolutely been my foundation. My brother Marcus for igniting my musical spark and always being there up to this day, someone I can call on anytime for any task. My wife, my children, in-laws, sister-in-law, nieces, aunts, cousins and loved ones who have all steered and cheered me on.
Over my 40 year journey in music my family has grown into a Famalay...sprawling all over the globe, all my musical friends; writers, producers, musicians, managers, dancers, collaborators, creators, techs, teachers, assistants, dedicated staff, friends and FANS 🙌… everyone who has ever contributed to anything I’ve done, it’s always been fun and I thank you all. I celebrate this award today with appreciation for how blessed I am to have people in my life that help me to realize my dreams.

I hope this can be an inspiration to all other entertainers, to keep working hard and to keep on aspiring. Congratulations also to all my fellow medal recipients. 🙏 Thank you Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹!

The Jamaican government has announced a series of activities, including 12 days of national mourning, to mark Thursday's death of Queen Elizabeth II, who was the country's head of state. The period will be observed from September 8-19. A day of mourning will be held on September 18. During the Period of Mourning, it is the customary recommendation that no celebratory activities should take place.

It pained me to pen this piece for - but it was necessary work. Labor Day Parade is in danger.

Watching the decline of the West Indian Labor Day Carnival Parade is symptomatic of something bigger happening in our cultural ecosystem that needs repair - NOW.

A special thank you to my circle, comprised of brilliant minds and fantastic thought-leaders - Dr. Natasha Lightfoot 🇦🇬, 🇹🇹, 🇯🇲and 🇹🇹 for their pensive contributions to making this story what it is - a reflection of what it means to be immersed in Caribbean culture as residents of the diaspora and the dire consequences of a potential cultural absence from place and space. From overpolicing, gentrification and a lack of education, Labor Day is under threat of cultural extinction and we really need to be honest with ourselves as a community and get uncomfortable to offer solutions for immediate repair. I hope this story encourages you to dig deeper… because there is a lot on the line.
