TECH040 — DJ Mag Review

In their latest review of TECH040, DJ Mag raises a fundamental question: does it make sense to conceptually package a compilation of music that already works so powerfully on its own? Our answer is both yes and no.
Conceived as a toolkit for commanding the dancefloor's attention, this release acts as a two-sided blade:

> For DJs, the title INTRO immediately signals what they are getting, addressing a genuine demand for specialized tools. While this need might not be widely articulated in the mass media, it made shaping the foundation for such a discussion all the more compelling for us.

>The other side of the blade is turned toward the dancefloor. For the audience eagerly awaiting their favorite festival headliner, the conceptual framing of the opening track becomes irrelevant — what matters is the impact of the moment the space is opened.

While our recent spotlights highlighted how veteran selectors view the art of the opening track, DJ Mag has now offered its own perspective.

TECH040 — INTRO

The first minutes of a set are a sensitive contract between the DJ and the dancefloor, through which an architecture of trust is built.

In this first artist spotlight, label founder Nastia, alongside Sera J and Bimol, break down the subtle art of the opening track — from pulling the audience into a new world and creating a boundary against the outside, to guiding the room’s energy into sharp focus.

Swipe through to read their thoughts on how a transition becomes an invitation — and to listen to the previews of their contributions to the new “INTRO” series on TECHNO Records.

TECHNO Records — INTRO

A series dedicated to the art of the opening track, that is more than just a collection of tracks — it is a professional toolkit. From deep hypnotism to restrained energy, each contribution is meticulously selected for its ability to prepare the space and the audience for the journey ahead.

Conceived as a functional extension of the DJ set, the “Intro” series explores the moments that frame the dancefloor experience. Focused on beginnings and endings, each release navigates the subtle tension between anticipation and resolution – from the first pulse that opens a space, to the final echoes that dissolve it. Stripped of excess and driven by intent, the series reflects a deeper layer of Techno: not just as a peak-time tool, but as a language of transition, atmosphere and control. The record brings together techno legends and contemporary tastemakers, featuring the long-awaited production debut of the label founder — Nastia — herself.

𝗩𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗲 — 𝗮 𝗷𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀.

A mainstay in lineups across Europe, Vardae embraces the role of the experimentalist with poise. He embodies the courage to be different — a superpower that grants TECH039 a new dimension, leading the listener into the broken dub rhythms of rituals from landscapes explored only in the artist's mind.

Hailing from Lyon, one of Europe’s major maritime hubs, Vardae brings an international pulse to his work. He now joins TECHNO Records, a label dedicated to the absolute pursuit of authenticity.

[TECH039]
His reinterpretation of The Paths Of Rhythm deepens the original's hypnotic component and serves as the final chapter of this record’s story, leaving the listener with a lingering desire to flip the side and repeat the journey.

| Feedback from the keen listener says: “The EP closes on a hypnotic note. By combining polyrhythmic pulses with a slow linear progression, Vardae crafts a track designed to induce a deep, meditative state.”

— Nastia explains why his track is on the record:
“Vardae represents a new generation of artists whose sound resists definition — it doesn’t fit into any box. I’m drawn to producers who push beyond their usual boundaries, experiment and explore different directions. His artistic vision feels both deep and expansive. His approach complements Andy Martin’s sound and aesthetic in a very natural way.”

TECH039

Recent release by TECHNO Records — five tracks from the studios of three different producers, telling one story in the genre of techno-futurism: an equally valuable addition in the context of a club-oriented DJ arsenal or a sophisticated collection for home listening. This record transmits the values of the label — pluralism of artistic vision and synergy in their complexity.

The vinyl edition — including a colored snow-purple variation — seals the deal for an uncompromising understanding of techno aesthetics.

𝗙𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 — 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲-𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵.

A Rome-based live producer, Feral has been shaping his global presence since 2015. His work is a quest for meaningful, unique nuances that eschew brute force in favor of something magnetic and hypnotic.

Today, he serves as a "vital element" in international festival lineups, offering a fresh perspective on the techno sound even to the most seasoned connoisseurs.

[TECH039]
With his signature precision and spatial awareness — so perfectly captured on TECH039 — the producer performs a structural transformation, delivering an organic and raw interpretation of the title track, Mechanical Vals. .heruka

| As one of our Bandcamp Backstage members said: “It’s an immersive track, rich in texture and a deep, surrounding atmosphere, utilizing smooth spatial panning to keep the listener suspended in the sound.”

— Nastia adds:
“Feral is one of the strongest voices in the alternative techno scene. His live sets never fail to impress me — minimal in form, yet incredibly powerful in motion. There’s something in the dynamics that pulls you in completely. It’s intelligent, trippy and consistently engaging music. He brings a truly non-trivial perspective on the record.” .dj
