In June, a midwife was detained and interrogated for five hours by the Taliban’s intelligence service, which threatened her with death if she continued her work with an NGO. She resigned two days later as a result, the report said.

“Two other NGOs had their licenses suspended by the de facto Department of Economy because of the presence of female employees in their offices,” it said.

There have also been reports of physical violence against women, including an incident in which members of the Taliban’s vice and virtue department beat a woman with a stick and forced her to leave a public park, it said.”

Freedom of speech and expression for Muslims in this country means killing everybody and destroying everything what comes their way or have differences with. Extremists, followers of herd instinct, and mass murderers, these are the adjectives which come to my mind when it comes to this religiously blinded nation. As far as this incident in itself is concerned, and many more similar incidents which happened in the past, it is high time to understand why this country is doomed and toxic to live in, on each and every level of socialisation. Blasphemy is the new tool to kill minorities and who not, these days and it does not shock me to see images like these because this nation is so full of lazy people with no aim of innovation and insightfulness at all. Pervez Hoodbhoy exclaims that; “Reform is not instantaneous, but proceeds by degrees. In contrast, the dogmatist dreams of reforming all of society in one holistic sweep and believes that he has in his possession a unique, unalterable blueprint. This quest for a utopia leads to authoritarianism, intolerance and violence because, once the end goal has been defined, no one is allowed to criticize or change it.” Therefore, dogmatism and religious animosity has always been one of the greatest tool used by politicians, mullahs, family units, and all social institutes, in Pakistan, to control and enable people to become foolish mobs, having no ability to question and become intolerable to everybody other than their communal group.

The Islam of Zia and appropriation of women in Pakistan

It is high time to revisit that the young women and men, of this generation, who are raised by parents who lived their youth in a blinded regime of the so-called Islamic models of Zia’s dictatorship. Our parents think the norms and regulations they taught us are very much inclined with the Islam of the state of Madina and whatever ideals they have for women in this society, as merely mothers, specifically, and sisters or daughters are the supreme Islamic ideals. Whereas, when you go back in history, you see how the whole discourse around women was manipulated and how our roles in society were constrained only to the family unit and modesty of being a Muslim woman. The current dilemma for women getting victim blamed for each and everything they go through is an offshoot of Zia’s Hudood ordinance and the family law ordinance. These pictures have interesting analysis of both the ordinances by Shehzadi Zamurrad and Michelle Maskiell. I wanted to highlight how, even to date, after a lot of struggle, women are still constrained to models of a good mother and modesty. Other than these two models its still very difficult for people to absorb the idea of women having will to power and decision making, and playing an effective role in society as merely women rather than being known by their association to a man only. It is Zia’s doing that women can still not have agency over themselves in this country, and even if they try to do that to their fullest, the so-called flag barer of Islam emerge from all directions to clip their feathers. It is highly important for women of this country to understand where this sense of victim blaming, restrained gender roles arose from, and read history from various resources in order to unveil truth on themselves and others. This continuous appropriation of how women should and shouldn’t act needs to be overthrown by logical and critical discourses forwarded by women themselves. Mary Wollstonecraft exclaims that, "I do not wish [women] to have power over men; but over themselves.”
