Edwin Lara drew a map telling police where to find Kaylee Sawyer's body. He indicated it was on Highway 126 across the street from a mailbox labeled "18700". Bend Police Detective TJ Knea was one of the first officers at the scene and discovered Kaylee's body lying on some rocks in a small canyon off of this guardrail.

When Edwin Lara was first booked into Tehama County Jail in California, he indicated to jail staff he wanted to speak with a lawyer. Staff thought he was asking a procedural question, not specifically asking for an attorney. Under the California penal code, new arrivals in jail must be given a chance to make three phone calls with three hours of being booked. Edwin was in a holding cell for five hours and was never allowed to make any calls. It wasn't until much later until he was able to call his wife. Here is an excerpt from that call.

Let's talk about how clever Aundreah Maes was during a critical moment in her kidnapping. Her phone alarm went off as she lay in bed next to her kidnapper. When he asked what it was for, she lied and said it was a reminder to take medicine for an STD! Would you have had the presence of mind to fake an STD?

After kidnapping Aundreah Maes in Salem and driving several hours to southern Oregon, Edwin Lara stopped at a roadside motel to get some rest. Here's the surveillance video as they checked into a room. Aundreah said: “I always wondered how the motel clerk didn’t notice any signs. I’m this young looking girl with an older looking guy and I looked completely tore up, no makeup and I had been crying.” Edwin warned her not to ask for help – not even to make eye contact – or he would kill her or the clerk.
