This image was taken Feb 2022 at the NY State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus in Albany. The natural hairstyling license that has been in existence since 1994, created with the guidance and expertise of pioneers of the natural hair industry, was in jeopardy of being eliminated. It was an emotional time…we were confused and upset but we were clear that action was necessary. We traveled to Albany share the truth about the tremendous impact the natural hair industry has on the health of Black women. After that trip it became clear that in order for the change we wanted to happen we had to be present to tell our story because we are the only ones who can! It is in our power to write our own future.

Trying to detangle the issues around licensing discrimination in cosmetology schools, to lack of natural hair schools…it was a huge undertaking and every part of it seemed priority! Which part would we tackle first? How do we even begin to create the change we want to see?

All of those questions were about to be answered and more! We were told about a new course called Advocacy Academy that was set to begin a few short weeks. This course was created for people just like us. People who are passionate about a cause, seeking to affect policy change that would make a difference to an entire community of people we love so deeply. It was a no brainer for all of us to sign up!

As a huge thank you to the organization we are raising funds for the program to be able to continue training more future advocates. Think of how beneficial it would be for our community to learn how to create actual action plans to solve the issues that affect us? That’s the potential of this course…everyone doing their part. It’s genius!!

I know you follow this page b/c of the work that we do, what we stand for and what we stand behind. Take a moment to check out the link in the bio to support the Center for Law & Social Justice’s Advocacy Academy course. It’s been instrumental in guiding us on our journey to secure the legacy of natural hair care in NY State!

Thank you🙏🏿

When I began Mane Moves back in 2010, I was covering a lot of natural hair events around the country. Over the years we began putting on our own series of events, we produced a few web series, live coverage of CURLFEST 2 years in a row and now we have launched Mane Moves Studios to assist hair care professionals in promoting their brands using video! You have only witnessed just a fraction of what I have in mind for this platform and where I want to go!

While I am in the process of refreshing our content offering, I want to hear from you! Being a part of the Mane Moves community is a relationship and to keep it strong communication is key! Please take a moment to take our Mane Moves Subscriber survey by Dec 05 if you want to get in on receiving information from us. If you have already signed up over the years…we are looking to re-engage you too! Only those who complete the survey will be notified going forward. Completing this survey will let us know that you really want to be here…and that matters! Our newsletters will be the best way to stay informed about what is happening with Mane Moves. My nephew was having difficulty getting the face/headpiece of his costume to fit right over his face. I had to cut the back to make room for his hair. This costume definitely did not account for anyone with lots of textured hair.

Is there anyone out there making costumes for kids with textured hair?

Massachusetts is the latest state to ban discrimination based on natural hairstyles and textures! The state's version of the was passed unanimously by both chambers and signed into law by Gov. Charlie Baker.

The experience of twin sisters Mya and Deanna Cook back in 2017 spurred the legislators to push for the bill to pass. The two students received detention and were threatened with suspension for wearing braids which were a protective style that was banned in their Massachusetts school's dress code policy.

“To be here and know that no one will go through what we did again, it means more than the world.” Deanna Cook.

Everything about this hits home for me. When I think about what I've learned through Haitian history about the connection to Dahomey. The warrior woman who was captured from Dahomey and brought to Ayiti, who raised a little boy who would grow to be the revolutionary that would free a country that would lead to the end of slavery around world. It is not lost on me where and who we come from. I am so thrilled that we using media to spark interest in our history and in essence, interest in ourselves and our inherent greatness.

"The Woman King" tells the "remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen."

Who's READY for this film???!

Today at 3-4pm ET, join and for an opportunity to reconnect for the summer solstice today, (June 21st) “In Ancient Kemet (what is today referred to as Egypt), the summer solstice was the most important day of the year. When the sun was at its highest, it meant that the Nile River was beginning to rise as well. The rising of the Nile River represented the soon to come floods which would feed and nourish the crops of the Nile Valley and feed a community. In this way, the summer solstice was a day of hope and gratitude for the rebirth of the community! It was a sign of fertility and abundance.” Dr. Afiya Mbilishaka

09/04/2022

One thing that I’ve found consistent in my work as a natural hair advocate is the lack of understanding around our hair…it’s not surprising if you think about it. Natural hair has been so misunderstood by many for so long. Education around our hair is so important because it’s the lack of this education and understanding that causes misconceptions, biases, discrimination and overall harm to continue.

Part of the educational process is informing lawmakers on what natural hair is…because many of them DO NOT KNOW! As a proud founding member of the Natural Hairstyle & Braid Coalition we’re happy to be at the Legislative Caucus hosting a Listening Circle around the importance of keeping and strengthening the NYS License. Join us to hear from some of the Master Pioneers in the industry on why strengthening the license matters to both the professionals and community alike!

For those who are not going to be in Albany but would like to get involved follow Coalition’s page for more info on how you can join in the movement in fortifying the Natural Hair Industry!

“For anyone who has ever faced hair discrimination or punishment for showing up exactly as you are, the is for you.”

~ Congresswoman Presley

The movement is POWERFUL. This doesn’t happen overnight…it takes doing the work and a strong dedication to the truth…especially in the face of adversity…oftentimes coming from the people who are suffering from the same injustice. Standing up for your rights is just that…standing up. It is understanding what you deserve and setting up the environment for you to receive it. Thank you to the countless women, men and children who have stood up and moved this forward. Onward and upwards.
