The trend took hold in Italy in the 1870s where it was promoted by the authors Luigi Capuana and Giovanni V***a under the
banner of verismo, the Italian word for realism, and drew inspiration from the naturalism of Émile Zola and his disciples.

Ah, the incredible Andrew Manze! Maybe you remember him from his time 20 years ago directing the English Concert, when he led the period instrument band through Vivaldi and friends with such sparkle and drive. Who’d have thought that we’d later find him far from gut strings and all the rest, conducting Vaughan Williams? That’s what he’s doing on this splendid release — a pendant to his complete recording of the composer’s symphonies, also made with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

The constant thread is Manze’s vigour, at its most intoxicating in the collection’s smallest piece, The Running Set, a delightful mash-up of folk tunes written for the 1934 English Folk Dance Festival. The dancing continues in Old King Cole, written ten years before. The big score for Job, the “masque for dancing” from 1931 inspired by William Blake’s illustrations of the Old Testament chronicle, has its own fancy footwork, though Manze puts even more effort into ensuring the episodic score’s dramatic force. When Satan was in his pomp, with organ roaring, I wanted to hide behind a cushion; the same held for Job’s nightmares. Sourced from a Liverpool Platinum Jubilee concert in May 2022, Manze’s interpretation of the piece is the most nuanced, the boldest and the best balanced available, and the whole album is a joy. After our French album I am happy to announce my second album with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. It is a tribute to a composer I admire very much for his absolute fine style to express the Latin American music roots and not only: Roberto Sierra.
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and I had a great time recording this music: Sinfonietta for String Orchestra, Two Pieces for Orchestra, Fandangos, Alegría and his Symphony No. 6, which we also had the pleasure of world premiering in October 2021.

'Rachmaninov’s stylistic career, the nostalgic, very private reference to his mothballed Symphony No. 1 heard alongside music which is surprisingly sharp-edged and pungent. You can hear the influence of composers as different as Gershwin, Ravel and Stravinsky in the work, and this new two-piano recording from Joseph Moog and Kai Adomeit is crisp and punchy, accentuating the score’s percussive edge. They’re superb in the panic-stricken final minutes of the third dance, the Dies Irae vanquished by a theme first used in Rachmaninov’s All Night Vigil, and the second movement’s sleazy waltz is terrific. And are the first movement’s driving rhythms an allusion to Stravinsky’s Rite? Moog and Adomeit suggest that they could be, and they bring an irresistible poignancy to the quotation from that early symphony, now soft, tender and in a major key.

Pianist Alexei Grynyuk once again proves himself with his technical skills as an excellent performer of the piano part as well as a sensitively acting partner.

One of the special features of the CD is the recording technique. The music was recorded using analogue technique and also processed analogue. In this way, the performers consciously aimed backwards to transmit a special warm sound that does not have the alleged ‘coldness’ of digital processing. As a result, the sound also offers the listener a closeness, almost as if the performers were sitting next to you. With their mutual musical communicative skills, they make it impossible not to keep listening.'
