THANKSGIVING TURKEY RESERVATIONS! 🦃

🍂Our favorite time of year is finally almost here which means… it’s time to start making thanksgiving turkey reservations! 🍁

Just like last year if you are filling out online just use our QR code to fill out the form and go over all the info. If you see us at market we’ll be doing paper forms to make things go quicker!

We are in full swing here at the farm with 3 sets of chickens at different phases, 2 sets of turkeys, and some large and in charge pigs!

Our next processing date will be the second weekend of September if you are looking for non frozen chicken🐓

When I was a kid (in the late 80s and the 90s) anytime that any one got a deer, let alone a “wall hanger” it was celebrated and taken on a tour, from the local check station to the butcher and all the grandparents in between. Pictures were taken and stories were told and repeated. My grandfather actually shot this deer but both he and my Dad (pictured with me and my brother) had hunted it.

It was great moment and memory for us to actually see a big deer up close as kids. Today that Buck along with this picture hangs in my man cave as a cherished memory.

The deer was taken on our family farm in the rolling hills of northern Maryland.

“Like a Flag in the Soybeans.” I was driving a side-by-side ATV along the edge of a farmer’s soybean field that appeared empty from all indications. Just a sea of green. Then suddenly, something caught the peripheral vision of my left eye, and a tree branch appeared to slowly rise above the sea of green soybean leaves. Slowly, I began to see more of the tree, which I finally identified as a velvet-covered whitetail buck’s rack and not a tree branch. Hitting the brakes of the ATV, I saw ears rising, and then two black eyeballs appeared, peaking over the top of the leaves. Thinking he was hidden, the buck watched me for a few seconds as I shot photos of him with my 500mm lens. Still thinking his presence was unknown to me, he lowered his head again to eat more high protein soybean leaves that had helped fuel this incredible antler growth. He must have walked a few yards to the right, and popped up again outside my camera’s viewfinder, so I had to readjust. Thinking he was hidden, because he was just peeking over the top of the leafy camouflage he was hiding behind, he didn’t realize how his rack shown like a flag in the field, illuminated by the late evening golden light of the setting sun. Having his fill of soybean leaves (and my presence), the buck turned tail and bounded over the rows of the extra-tall soybean plants to the closest tree-line. For those that will ask, this buck was not laying down, but was standing up feeding along on these green leaves. They were up to my waist, and way over his back. And every time he would lower his head for the lower soybean leaves, it looked like a completely empty field of green. 💥Now for a quick tip! 💥 Over the 35+ years of photographing whitetail deer all over North America, you would be surprised how close you can get to wildlife that thinks it’s hidden, in a vehicle. The best vehicles to use are the ones the deer see on a daily or regular basis, that don’t show them any harm. That includes the farmers tractor or his ATV, or his old farm truck he checks his fields in. I can’t tell you how many tractors and borrowed vehicles I’ve used from landowner’s. Try it, I guarantee you, it works, as this photo attests’!

Jeff Thompson brought his dandy Charles County buck to OM Steve Keithley recently to be measured. Taken by compound bow on September 16, 2023, the wide rack gross scores 140 2/8 and nets 135 6/8 making “Maryland’s Finest” records. Congratulations Jeff!
