A mentor, director and collaborator of people and projects around the world, this author and professor offers insight into how dramatherapy can meet the challenges of today’s global population.
Dramatic reality is an imaginative space we create and share, making it real for ourselves and others.
Drama therapy turns imaginings into something tangible, like a drawing or a performance.
Drama therapists blend serious play with therapeutic techniques, recalling the innate creativity we had as children.
Imagination in drama therapy transcends reality’s limitations and envisions new possibilities.

Mental Health Awareness Month
"Finding the right path to healing from PTSD is key. Working closely with a mental health professional skilled in treating PTSD can guide you through therapies and medications tailored to your needs. Remember, recovery often involves addressing not just the trauma, but also any accompanying conditions like panic disorder, depression, or substance use. You're not alone on this journey – support from loved ones can make all the difference.
-traumaticstressdisorder
PTSD can manifest differently for everyone. Some may feel unexplained pain or pressure in their body. Others re-experience emotions from the traumatic event like fear, horror, or distress. Common signs also include panic attacks, nightmares, a racing heart, and difficulty breathing. If you notice these symptoms, it's important to seek support.
-traumaticstressdisorder
PTSD Awareness Month.
What is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)?
Experiencing fear during and after a traumatic event is a natural response. This fear triggers the body’s “fight-or-flight” mechanism, aiding in our response to potential threats. While many people experience a variety of reactions following trauma and eventually recover, some individuals continue to have persistent symptoms. When these symptoms do not subside, they may be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

When I was little my dad won a big radio from his company's Christmas party. I used it to “play radio” whenever I could. I would put on old records that were lying around and some of his old tapes and create a radio show. When podcasts came about it was a no-brainer for me to make one! My goal is to use my natural curiosity to talk with our colleagues and bring their work to you. I hope that through listening to these stories, you become inspired by what your fellow clinicians are doing and that you would be willing to share your story with us too.
Ramón Guitart, LPCC, P-RDT (Host)
Ramon Guitart is a drama therapist, actor, director, radio interviewer, and host. Currently working in a pediatric hospital in Denver. Ramon works with children dealing with eating disorders and other psychiatric conditions. He worked for many years with the Latino community in Philadelphia and California and wrote and directed “The Latinx Experience” – a play about visibility, social justice, and immigration, performed at the 2019 NADTA Conference. During his time on Drama Therapy Radio, he has been passionate about interviewing BIPOC and international Drama therapists.
Jon DeAngelis, LCAT, CP, RDT (Host)
When I completed my training several years ago I felt I knew only a portion of what I needed to know to be a good clinician. Even with good supervision and working in a supportive facility, I still thought I would learn the most by learning what my colleagues were doing, and how they were doing it. Since conferences are always helpful but are often infrequent - and before you know it they're over - I realized that podcast technology might be an ideal medium for connecting professionals in the field in a real and personal way. And so was born Drama Therapy Radio. I hope this project contributes to your professional growth and knowledge, and the enrichment and satisfaction of your practice – like I know it contributes to mine.
Untitled Fat Liberation Project: “There Is No Aesthetic Distance Living in a Fat Body”
Seven Creative Arts Therapists devise a performance to present to the public their experiences living in fat bodies. We asked drama therapist Heidi Landis to have a chat with them and ask why and what goes into such a project, what does reclaiming space mean, what were (and are) their expectations, and where they are now, in relationships with their bodies, and where the project goes from here. This insightful and reflective community discussion reverberates well beyond those of us living in fat bodies.
"Put out seating for fat people at your performances. Let fat people be in your spaces."

Drama therapy is an embodied practice that is active and experiential. This approach can provide the context for participants to tell their stories, set goals and solve problems, express feelings, or achieve catharsis. Through drama, the depth and breadth of inner experience can be actively explored and interpersonal relationship skills can be enhanced.

Grounded in both Devised and Therapeutic Theater processes, this project lends itself to collective storytelling and social practice—the art form of community. The script creation of the Untitled Fat Liberation Project is and will continue to be a responsive process. As we changed together over the past 9 weeks, so has our script, and so has the story we want to tell. We started with three content-generating workshops and then met as an ensemble for six Saturdays. During these meetings, we read new pages, processed what felt true and resonant, generated more content, and then took it apart and put it back together again. This fluid, playful, messy playmaking process reflects our collective evolving relationship to our own fat liberation, fat sovereignty, and the ephemeral nature of theater itself. Krista Verrastro will be hosting a Vision Board Workshop. She started these workshops in 2017, after envisioning how drama therapy could enhance the process of making vbs (since one thing she loves about drama therapy is taking action instead of just talking about things) Use various creative techniques to go through the process of letting go of what we don't want, calling in what we do want, and practicing gratitude for what we have that's working well Her favorite drama therapy elements in the workshops are having people role-play with their future selves, their obstacles, their resources, and their inner strength NEXT WORKSHOP on Sunday 1/7/24, 1:00-3:30pm ET, via Zoom (open to any adults) This workshop is for adults only.
