For the last 50 years, the way we experience music has changed significantly.
The move from owning physical and later digital music (remember Steve Jobs bragging about having 1,000 songs in his pocket in 2001?) to streaming is one of the greatest changes; playing songs from a library in the ether in real-time.
In several respects, streaming has given the music business a significant boost, offsetting the downturn in physical format sales and reshaping the way music is packaged, delivered, and consumed.
Streaming accounted for more than half (56.1 percent) of worldwide digital music sales for the first time by the end of 2019, according to the IFPI leader of the global music industry.
With 89 percent of music listeners globally listening to music via on-demand downloads, and 54 percent of 35 to 64-year-olds using a streaming service in the past month, it is the industry’s fastest-growing revenue outlet, up to eight percent on estimates taken 12 months ago.
In music streaming, Apple Music and Spotify are the two main brands. But it can be difficult to find out which is the best choice for you with identical catalogs and the same monthly membership price ($9.99, £9.99, or AU$11.99). It is not an easy task to choose between Spotify and Apple Music, especially because each service has its own interface, a collection of exclusive bonus songs, and a multitude of distinctive social features.
Much of your choice comes down to where you listen, so if you love music at home, it is important to figure out which one has the best smart speaker help. But for keen music lovers, other variables including music discovery and stream consistency can be just as critical (if not more).
