NDN Collective to Host Welcome Home Event for Leonard Peltier

By NDN Collective

Belcourt, ND – To welcome Leonard Peltier back to his homelands after 49 years of wrongful incarceration, NDN Collective will host a celebratory event and community feed at the Sky Dancer Event Center in Belcourt, North Dakota on Wednesday, February 19, 2025 at 12pm CST. The event will also be live-streamed on NDN Collective’s Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn accounts.

Peltier was granted executive clemency and had the remainder of his sentence commuted by President Biden on January 20th of this year. He will be released from prison the day before the event.

NDN Collective and partners built upon five decades of advocacy and played a significant role in securing Peltier’s release. The organization and community leaders have been overseeing the process of bringing Peltier home to the Turtle Mountain community. This Welcome Home event will provide an opportunity for Peltier to reconnect with his home community and adjust back into life among his people.

“We made a commitment to free Leonard Peltier and bring him back to his homelands – this is us fulfilling that commitment,” said Nick Tilsen, NDN Collective Founder and CEO. “We are welcoming Leonard back home in a beautiful way to thank him for his legacy by feeding the people, thanking everyone who fought for him for years, and honoring those who fought for his freedom but are no longer with us.”

“We know there are so many people throughout Turtle Island and around the globe who would have loved to celebrate our elder’s homecoming in person,” said Janene Yazzie, NDN Collective Director of Policy & Advocacy. “There was so much love and intention put into making sure Leonard’s welcome home was done in a good way to honor the hard work and prayers of everyone who dreamed of this day, and to surround Leonard with the love and gratitude he deserves so that he may find peace and healing from this point on.”

It's just the latest step in what could be a long process to actually see a casino built along the city's southern edge.

📢 Exciting News! 🎰✨

On Monday, February 3rd, 2025, TMBCI Tribal Chairman Jamie Azure met with the Grand Forks City Council to discuss the development of a casino on tribal land in Grand Forks. The City Council approved the Letter of Intent, marking an important step forward in this partnership!

Chairman Azure spoke on the unique opportunity this collaboration presents:

🗣️ “We are here as a business owner; we are here trying to provide opportunity of two groups coming together for a unique opportunity that nobody else can bring forward… If we do this right, we do this together, we do this open communication, we put the data on the table, that will guide us if this is going to be profitable, if it's going to be good culture for the two entities that are standing in here today between the City of Grand Forks and our tribe.”

This project is expected to create new jobs, boost tourism, and foster economic growth for both TMBCI and the Grand Forks community. Stay tuned for more updates!

The March issue of the ND Living Magazine will have this article about student Addison Letvin:

Addison Letvin, a sophomore at Rolette High School, will represent North Central Electric Cooperative at the annual Electric Cooperative Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. in June.
Addison, 16, is the daughter of Jenny and Darren Janz, Dunseith and Lori and Tim Letvin, Rolette. She won an essay contest to determine the cooperative’s Youth Tour participant.
The Youth Tour brings 1,500 high school students from across the country to our nation’s capital. While there, Youth Tour participant learn about electric cooperatives and how our federal government works. They also receive leadership training, which helps develop future leaders.
Best of all, students get to experience the sites of our nation’s capital, including the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the U.S. Capitol, the White House, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, the Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Smithsonian. They also make a trip to the Gettysburg Battlefield.
The Youth Tour is a weeklong, all-expenses-paid experience set for June 15-21. Addison will join about 15 other North Dakota students as they journey to Washington, D.C.
Addison is active in her high school, participating in volleyball and working on the school yearbook. She works part time at the Birchwood Steakhouse and Lounge at Lake Metigoshe and last summer also worked at the Bottineau Bean coffee shop.
She enjoys snowboarding in the winter and jet skiing in the summer. When she has spare time she enjoys reading, playing volleyball and sitting by the lake with family and friends.
Congratulations to Addison on being selected to represent North Central Electric Cooperative on the Youth Tour!

If SB 2376 passes, it would open an opportunity for the tribe to expand beyond its boundary. The casino could see gross gaming revenue of nearly $80 million in its first year.
