Looks at the importance of local scenes focusing on the roots of the punk music scene of Little Rock, Arkansas as well as focusing on the power of the independent artist. Beginning in the late 1980s, punk kids in this small southern town began to find each other. High school kids began to build a musical community without the blessing of the mainstream music industry. Bands were formed, record lab
els were made, and fanzines were written. Virtually all were being managed by high school kids. Towncraft was a little rock punk compilation released in August of 1993 on File 13 Records and featured the most prominent bands of that summer. It saw great reviews in some of the biggest underground magazines in the country. Perhaps what is just as remarkable as the early LR punk scene is what grew out of it. The music began to spread to different genres. Max Recordings is one of the record labels that grew out of this. Owned and operated by Burt Taggart, [Chino Horde, The Big Cats] it still works to document the music coming out of Little Rock. To this day, nothing seems to compare to the art being created on a local level. Take a listen.
