Wings Over Houston (WOH) is an annual aviation show, running at Ellington Airport over a weekend in late October. The air display, organized by the volunteers of the Commemorative Air Forces, highlights both historic and contemporary aircraft.
At Wings Over Houston Airshow, you'll see the US Navy Blue Angels and some of the best civilian pilots. Yet, one of the most impressive performances must be Tora! Tora! Tora!, the reenactment of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, when the USA became involved in World War II. On the event's official website (see External Resources below), you can sign up for free to become an airshow insider and get a 50% discount.
Ellington Airport is situated southeast of the city, some 18.5 miles (30 km) away from Downtown Houston, so getting there won't be a trouble. You can book your stay in one of the nearby accommodations suggested on the map.
Next to the venue, you'll find the Lone Star Flight Museum, where you can learn about US space history. But if you want to investigate the subject further, take a 15-minute drive further southeast to the famous Space Center Houston.
Though set for the fall, Houston weather typically is hot and humid. Comfortable shoes and clothing, as well as sunscreen, sunglasses and head cover, are recommended as there are no indoor facilities.
The Wings Over Houston Airshow aerial and pyrotechnical performances produce loud noises, smoke and fire. Ear protection is recommended, especially for children.
Traffic leaving Ellington Airport after the Airshow is very heavy and long delays may occur. Plan accordingly. Please take your time leaving the Airshow, and make sure you take that last restroom break before you sit in traffic!
