As Elly and her team on The Hat Magazine prepare to deliver the 100th edition I look back at the very first issue, and remember the financial constraints, the printing dilemma and the overall stress levels as the pages and the articles were completed. Then….. as our first major ‘shoot’ took to the studio, the adrenaline took over flowing through our veins.

And industry people who I’d known for years supported us in this very new adventure by adding their company names to the Directory, some even taking advertising space within a trade magazine they’d never seen! We all held our breathes as the very first international magazine for the global Hat Industry was about to hit the shelves!!!

Money was extremely tight, so black & white it was, apart from the two covers. We managed ‘a shoot’ with the assistance of dear Avril Groom; included a ‘Workroom Process’ at Philip Somerville’s; and added two very creative pages for a Designer Sketchbook, and it worked amazingly well.

Congratulations to all those who helped take The Hat Magazine to its century…..
We never dreamed it would survive and keep growing – well done team, publishers and readers – Hats Off to you all !!

It was such a lovely surprise to bump into John Callanan () on the Tesi stand at Who’s Next!
The last time we met was eight years ago in New York at the Javits Centre, on the stand of Dorfman Pacific… where he was their ace designer!!

He was now living in Paris….. just had time to catch up and Go take a quick photo before he had to dash……. ‘ I’ve been in the HAT business for 35 years, he said, and it’s very hard to let it go!

Yep!! I know the feeling…. 🥰🥂🥳

The Worshipful Company of Feltmakers are pleased to announce that at the recent British Red Cross fair held at the Guildhall in London, the Feltmaker stand broke all its past records and took an unbelievable sum of £8,800 in just one and a half days!!
Master Simon Wilkinson and Fourth Warden Simon Wood made the announcement. They also announced that the total amount raised for the British Red Cross, for the whole fair was £132,813.44 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Two of the contributors to the Red Cross Fair, which took place last week in the historic Guildhall, were international milliners Philip Treacy and Rachel Trevor-Morgan.

They had donated beautiful felt hats for a silent auction organised by the British Red Cross.

Sadly, the website was not easy to navigate, and details and images of the hats difficult to find.

Therefore, I have decided to continue the auction, as these beautiful hats would make a wonderful Christmas present as well as accessorising a smart winter coat for the Christmas season.

Rachel Trevor-Morgan is a British milliner best known for the hats she created for the Queen Elizabeth II. The hat designed by Rachel for the silent auction was a fuchsia pink velour felt downbrim with spotted veiling and a bow.

Please send details of any bids of at least £695 to me [email protected] and I will come back to you,

The bid does not include postage or packing if sent outside of London. At the present time the hat is with one of the Feltmaker’s based near St James’ and could be collected.

All money received will be paid directly to the Feltmakers’ Livery Company, who in turn will made one large donation to the British Red Cross.

This is an unbelievable price for such a unique and treasured winter hat!

This auction will run until midnight on Tuesday the 5th of December!!

Thank you
Carole

Thank you all those who attended the Guildhall Christmas Market 2023 to raise much needed funds for the British Red Cross. No announcement has yet been made of the amount taken at the Feltmaker’s stand – we are just hoping that it exceeds the £5,000 received in 2019.

A big thank you therefore to milliners, hatters, retailers and factories for donating new samples for the sale. And to the amazing work undertaken by so many Feltmakers before, during and after the 2-day sale to raise money for this much-loved charity.

On behalf of the British Red Cross……
‘All funds raised at this year’s market will support the humanitarian work of the Red Cross, helping people in crisis in the UK and in 191 countries across the world.’

From the many exhibits the beautiful bonnets on display were just spectacular.

This hat by milliner Lauren Martin was one example of the delicacy and intricacy of ‘the bonnet’ worn throughout the Georgian/Victorian era.

This particular bonnet made for an exhibition at Bankfield Museum in Halifax relates to Anne Lister and the clothing worn during her lifetime.

Replicating the 1830’s Lauren endeavoured to match the materials as close as possible to those available at that time, using vintage trims and ribbons. The finished bonnet was absolutely stunning!

Tranoi is located within the grand Palais Brongniart, with its giant Corinthian colonnades. and spacious airy interior. The show runs for four days from Thursday - Sunday and has in the past been a hub for Japanese buyers.

This season I saw three contrasting headwear companies, Reinhard Plank from Florence in Italy, Coco from New York and Ferruccio Vecchi from Montaponne, Italy (above) showing a collection that included a wide brimmed fedora in both crochet and woven Panama and a range of fitted cloches made from a mix of textures and colours.

The show combines both clothing and accessories, and this season celebrated a 'total fashion’ look for s/s 2024 with an open air catwalk show on the marble platform adjacent to the colonnade.

Have just discovered that on the NY Subway at 23rd & Broadway the tiled station walls are decorated with pictures of……… HATS!

Considering the number of trips I’ve made to NY to cover; the shows at the Javits Centre and Pier 94, The Headwear Assoc. Dinners and stories for the Hat Magazine, I never once stood on this platform.

After some investigating I found that this was once a thriving ‘fashion and millinery’ area of New York City, and that “Memories of 23rd Street” was an Artwork by Keith Godard installed in 2002 to pay homage to the regular patrons of this very heady neighbourhood.

The hats made in 'tile mosaic' and positioned along the tiled wall are recognised for their wearers – be it Oscar Wilds, Eleanor Roosevelt, Marie Curie, Scott Joplin, P.T. Barnum and Tom Thumb etc….. more interesting was the fact that they were painted at the height of the wearer……….

So now you’ve missed your train….. but what a find!!!

FYI: From 1880’s to the 1920’s 23rd Street was a major vaudeville, cultural and entertainment district with a thriving fashion industry, bustling with actresses, dancers and many creative people.

I visited the Globe Theatre in London today to exchange a T-shirt I was given at Christmas!! The lovely people, they said I could 🥰👏🥰

Opposite the shop, was a cabinet with a full length costume designed for Jan Lapotaire as Queen Elizabeth I in the Royal Gala opening of the Globe Theatre on the 12th of June 1997.

The hat and ruff were credited to theatrical milliner Sean Barrett.

You can see more of Sean’s work in a new exhibition opening in Luton on the 5th of September entitled “Hats Made Me”.
Not to be missed!!!!!!
