Improper Books A comic and book publishing studio focusing on creator-owned stories that have a touch of the fairy tale, the fantastical, or the otherworldly.

Improper Books is a publishing studio focusing on creator-owned stories that have a touch of the fairy tale, the fantastical, or the otherworldly. Originally founded in 2009 by Benjamin Read (Writer), Laura Trinder (Illustrator), and Chris Wildgoose (Illustrator). While collaborating on the set of the UK independent feature ARMISTICE (2013), the trio discovered a mutual love for comics, illustrate

d books, and the darker side of fairy tales, and set about making their own. From that, the idea of Improper Books was born; a collective of like-minded writers, illustrators, and other creatives with the know-how to make comics, books, and apps, all of which would have a touch of the fairy tale, the fantastical or the otherworldly, and based on a creator-owned model that is fair to all involved. Since its inception, the group has grown to include Nathan Ashworth (Colourist), Jordan Boyd (Colourist), Jim Campbell (Letterer), Derek Dow (Colourist), Sara Dunkerton (Illustrator), Luke Foster (Editor), Matt Gibbs (Writer/Managing Editor), Zoë Horn Haywood (Designer), Rose Hewlett (Production Director), Mark Kendrick (Digital Media), André May (Colourist), Bevis Musson (Illustrator), and Alexa Rosa (Colourist/Flatter).

MULP: Sceptre of the Sun Issue #5, by Matt Gibbs & Sara Dunkerton, is out today, thanks to supporting UK comic shops!

This final instalment, sees both our heroic and villainous rodents taking shelter together inside the volcano that lies at the very heart of the mysterious, tropical valley that they discovered hidden in Antarctica. As they gather their bearings and wits, what new discoveries await them inside the volcano? And, as they finally close in on the Sceptre, will their fragile alliance last?

Praise for MULP: Sceptre of the Sun so far:

“This has all the elements of a classic kids’ adventure like TINTIN itself: secrets and experts and exotic locations; infiltration, reputation and ducking for cover.” Stephen L. Holland (Page 45)

“It’s an extremely clever, well rounded story they’ve built here, one that isn’t beholden to its influences but also isn’t embarrassed by them.” Alasdair Stuart (travellingman.wordpress.com)

“Most anthropomorphic adventure series, such as Rupert Bear or Bryan Talbot’s Grandville series, take their characters as human analogues to the extent that they are human size, MULP does not – in MULP the mice really are mice sized.” Jeremy Briggs (downthetubes.net)
