A fitting tribute to the great Slim Dunlap

Slim Dunlap 🩵 RIP

*The Night Slim Dunlap Broke Stinky’s Nose*

Slim Dunlap passed away Wednesday afternoon. Dec 18, 2024. He was a Minneapolis legend. A true individual. He also had the coolest sense of style and a beautiful face. I was always fascinated by him. I mean, he was in The Replacements! He replaced Bob Stinson on guitar. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love The Replacements.

Slim was just flat out honest and cool. His gorgeous sunken eyes were all knowing and he had a wry smile. A wink and a nod to all things past and present. I loved him from afar. I studied him. I never in a million years thought I’d meet him.

One night in the nineties I was on the road with The Rugburns. We were in the Midwest and our agent asked us if we’d like to open for Slim Dunlap at Schuba’s in Chicago. I couldn’t believe our luck. It was such a big moment for me.

The Replacements had broken up on July 4 1991 and Slim was touring under his own name with a cool band in tow.
We obviously said yes and I slowly counted the days till I was going to (hopefully) meet Slim Dunlap.

Word on the street had it that he would sometimes ask the opening act to play poker. I was hoping he’d ask us. Sure enough the night finally arrived and we sound-checked after Slim and set up our merch next to his.

I was filled with excitement and trepidation and then — voila— we met Slim! And just like I imagined, he asked us if we wanted to play poker. The backstage room was actually upstairs at Schuba’s and it was large. There was a round table in the middle and we shook Slim’s hand and commenced the shuffling of the cards. We settled on 7 card stud and pulled our wrinkled dollars out of our pockets. Dollars, quarters, dimes and guitar picks. Ci******es, beer and whisky. The room was smoky and smelled just like you think it would with 2 bands crammed inside that had been on the road for God knows how long.

The game went on and on and pretty soon we had to go on stage to open the show. The bets started getting larger and now there were five dollar bills and even a few tens and twenties scattered about. It was my final hand before I hit the stage. I had a beautiful hand that was perfectly hidden. I had 3 aces down and a pair of twos showing with an 8 and a 10. It looked like a junk hand but I was sitting there with a full house.

Slim had a flush and it was mostly hidden. Everyone else folded and the pot was pretty big. Slim kept betting more and he would raise and I would re-raise till we were all in. Finally it was time to turn our cards over. Stinky— the drummer extraordinaire for The Rugburns— was standing right behind Slim watching the final hand go down. The pot was substantial. Everyone was crowded around the table but Stinky was right there with his face right over Slims’s curly haired skull.

We turned our cards over and everyone screamed when they saw Slim’s heart flush but then I flipped over my 3 aces and Slim jumped up and yelled “sh*t!” and the back of his head smashed into Stinky’s nose. The blood spattered instantly and sprayed across the wall and Stinky’s nose was pouring blood like it was a horror film.

My full house beat Slim’s flush.

Slim, ever the gentleman, apologized profusely and ran to get some ice and a rag from the bar. He felt so bad and hugged Stinky and got him a shot of Jim Beam.

We went on stage 10 minutes later and played the show. Stinky’s nose was stuffed with Kleenex and had tape over it. It kept bleeding during our set and Stinky’s snare looked super cool with blood dripping on it.

The show was still really good and Slim was of course transcendent. We said our goodbyes and traded merch and hugs and went on our way.

We were all so proud that Slim broke Stinky’s nose. We got a lot of mileage outta that story for the next few shows.

In 2012 Slim suffered a debilitating stroke and was never the same again. The poor guy was bed ridden and could barely speak above a whisper. I went to visit him in Minneapolis and I sang him some Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and Hank Williams songs.

I asked him if he remembered breaking Stinky’s nose and of course he did. He squeezed my hand and smiled. He still had that mischievous grin.

His lovely wife Chrissie took care of Slim till the very end. She’s a beautiful soul and I’m thinking of her today.

Life… Sigh, so fast. So fleeting. Full of memories.

Travel on Slim Dunlap. You’re free to roam about the cabin. God speed. I hope you’re smiling somewhere and maybe playing poker with the opening act.

Seems every year there is a mid-December release that makes me rethink all the year-end best of lists. This time is the new one from Ben Chapman called "Downbeat." A great southern funk country soul Americana record, complete with a fantastic Dylan cover.

Speaking of Country Soul - join me as I guest host Saturday Sage on KRCL on the 14th (10am - 1pm MST). I'll be doing a 60s - 70s Southern Soul/Country Funk special. Should be fun!

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, country funk and southern soul emerged as distinctive genres that blended rural American musical traditions with R&B grooves and funk rhythms.

Artists like Tony Joe White, Bobby Charles, and Jerry Reed pioneered country funk by incorporating wah-wah pedals, heavy bass lines, and syncopated drumming into traditional country arrangements.

Meanwhile, southern soul, epitomized by labels and studios like Stax, FAME and Muscle Shoals, featured artists such as James Carr, Arthur Alexander, and Joe South who merged country's storytelling with soul music's intensity and gospel-influenced vocals.

Together, these genres reflect the South's complex musical heritage and the era's breaking down of racial and stylistic barriers.

Support your favorite independent artists by purchasing their music, merch and seeing them live.

I always have mixed feeling during this "Spotify Wrapped" season. Spotify is great for exposure and music discovery, but I hope ya'll also buy music you really love. It could take over 5000 streams on Spotify to equal the revenue of one purchase of an album.

Bandcamp is a great way to do that - 100% of proceeds go to the artist on Bandcamp Friday, happening today and last one of the year.

And support your local community radio stations like KRCL 90.9FM - who's end of year campaign is happening now!

Here is a good list to start with!

Our monthly round-up of folk, bluegrass, roots rock, Americana, and all things country-ish.

Still working of the Across the Tracks end of the year list, but this is good one! So much good music this year, it'll be a tough one.

Americana has never been better with the quality of music, diversity of styles, and the artists' demographics in terms of race, gender, and wealth.
