In Defense of Enugu State Government Initiatives: Strengthening Tax Base for Sustainable Development

Amidst the recent public outcry over the Enugu state government's decision to increase taxes, particularly targeting major markets;such as Ogbette and Ogige, it's crucial to shed light on the rationale behind such initiatives. While initial reactions may stem from frustration and skepticism, it's essential to recognize the broader context and the potential benefits these measures can bring.

First and foremost, expanding the tax base is a fundamental aspect of fiscal responsibility and sustainable governance. By increasing revenue streams, state governments can finance essential services and infrastructure projects, ranging from healthcare and education to transportation and public safety, without necessarily waiting for federal allocations before undertaking such. These investments are vital for improving the quality of life for all citizens and driving economic growth.

It's important to address the misconception that such tax increases are arbitrary or unjustified. In reality, they are often a necessary response to evolving economic realities and fiscal challenges. Major markets represent significant economic hubs within the state, generating substantial commercial activity and revenue. Asking them to contribute their fair share through taxation is not only reasonable but also equitable.

Furthermore, the notion of accountability must be addressed head-on. While concerns about government transparency and accountability are valid, they should not overshadow the broader goals of fiscal sustainability and public welfare. Instead of rejecting tax increases outright, citizens should demand greater transparency and oversight to ensure that generated revenue is allocated efficiently and effectively.

It's also worth noting that increasing taxes on major markets is a common practice in other parts of the world. In many developed countries, businesses operating in urban centers are subject to various taxes and levies to support local government services and infrastructure. By aligning with international standards, state governments can foster a more conducive business environment and attract investment.

In conclusion, while the decision to increase taxes may be met with resistance and skepticism, it's essential to recognize the long-term benefits and necessity of such measures. Strengthening the tax base is not only a pragmatic approach to fiscal management but also a means of ensuring sustainable development and equitable distribution of resources. By fostering informed dialogue and advocating for accountability, we can work towards a future where taxation serves as a catalyst for positive change rather than a source of contention.

Youth Arise

In the face of escalating climate challenges, it's time for us, the youth, to take matters into our own hands. While we often look to governments for solutions, there's a pressing need for immediate action that cannot wait for bureaucratic processes. One of the most impactful and accessible actions we can take is to engage in weekly street cleaning initiatives.

The benefits of street cleaning extend far beyond the surface. By clearing litter and debris from our streets, we're not only enhancing the aesthetics of our communities but also actively combating environmental degradation. Every piece of trash removed is a victory against pollution, preventing harmful substances from seeping into our soil and waterways.

But the significance of street cleaning doesn't stop there. It's a tangible way to demonstrate our commitment to the planet, showing that we refuse to stand idly by as our environment suffers. Through our collective efforts, we can instigate change at the grassroots level, setting an example for others to follow.

Moreover, weekly street cleaning fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among the youth. Instead of waiting for someone else to address the issue, we're taking matters into our own hands and shaping the future we want to see. This empowerment is invaluable, fueling a sense of agency and purpose in our generation.

Let's not underestimate the ripple effect of our actions. By engaging in weekly street cleaning, we're not only improving our immediate surroundings but also inspiring others to join the cause. It's a powerful form of activism that transcends age, background, and geographic location, uniting us in a common goal: to protect and preserve our planet for future generations.

So, I urge my fellow youth: let's roll up our sleeves, grab a broom, and hit the streets. Together, we have the power to make a difference—one clean sidewalk at a time. Let's be the change we wish to see in the world. The time for action is now.

When you leave money and pursue women, you are the most foolish person on earth.

18/01/2024

If you are not making money in your sleep, you are not wealthy. Wealth comes only from assets, not from money. An asset is anything that makes money for you, whether or not you work. A job is not an asset, because if you don’t work, you don’t get paid! Use the first quarter of your life to work at a job. But while working, learn the business and save your salary to invest, so you can use the next quarter of your life to acquire assets, and build a business, then fire your boss. Or he may fire you in the 3rd quarter of your life for reduced productivity

It is very surprising to hear that the sum of N3 billion was approved for verification of national register of the poor. This can only happen in Nigeria. I have maintained that we must decisively deal with the issue of cost of governance in Nigeria now as a matter of urgency.

Sadly, this very huge amount approved just for verification of national register of the poor is more than three times the amount of N908,699,435 which was budgeted for our National Library.

This is happening at a time in our nation when we need all the manpower training to to keep our work force productive. Our national library, a very critical infrastructure in our nation, seemingly abandoned, lacks books and educational materials.

The same amount, would have made a significant impact, if prudently and transparently managed. Moreso, with more than half of our population battling with absolute and multi dimensional poverty, one wonders why such a huge sum was approved for just verification of national register of the poor, when the same amount could have been directed towards actual poverty alleviation. This approval raises a fundamental question: how come the data for poverty alleviation has not been verified on a regular basis?

The inability of we the leaders to prioritise our expenditure and focus on the critical areas of national development, and national security, are the challenges weighing down on our nation today.

Unless we begin to sacrifice our personal comfort for the good of society, and begin to care more for the people, especially the less privileged ones, our nation will continue to grapple with all forms of societal ills caused by high level of poverty.

"The most important decision you'll ever make has nothing to do with your money or career - it is who you marry" - Warren Buffet

Choosing the right person from the start of a relationship is critical. Finding someone that shares your values, you are physically attracted to, pushes you to be better and lights you up inside is the goal.

Let me share with you some of the life's lesson I learnt from my parents.

1) We all communicate differently.

Study your partner. Meet them halfway—and then go a little further. Understand their love languages. Disagree respectfully.

(2) Look for the good.

Some years will suck. It won’t always be that way. Focus on the journey and let the milestones surprise you. The best stuff is in the mundane.

(3) Be a great teammate.

Life is hard. Doing it with someone you love, trust, and admire is far easier. Treat marriage like the best team you’ve ever played on.

(4) You’re never done winning them over.

Marriage is a verb—an ongoing commitment. Be thoughtful. Do the small things. Always be serving.

(5) Don’t keep score—it’ll never be 50/50.

Marriage is a bunch of give and take. Play to each others strengths. Pick up the slack when needed—your time will come.

(6) Be each others #1 fans.

Listen, support, and encourage them. Help them realize their potential. When they fail, be the first to pick them up. When they succeed, be the first to say “I told you so”.

(7) Don’t give up.

Ruthlessly prioritize the one’s you love.

Marriage is an integral part of life that a wrong decision can cause you a lot. For those who are already married, ask God to help you make it work. For those who are not married, ask God to help you make the right choice; don't rush into it.

Please share to educate others. Someone might need this.

To your continuous growth and wellness.

LOOK AT THIS PICTURE

This is a home of people that have wealth. Money is not there problem. But today, the story is different. No one is living there any longer. All have died.
This is a reminder to those who boast about having it all in life. This life is short lived. Nobody will live here for ever. My advice is for you to make people around you become successful. Through that you will leave a befitting legacy behind.

MIND YOURSELF

Forget what others have and where they are. You’re not walking in their shoes, and you’ll never comfortably walk in your own if you keep comparing yourself to them.

Don't get me wrong. I am not saying you should not compare yourself with others at all. I am only saying you should consider your life situation and journey first to see if it makes sense to do so.

Focus on what’s best for YOU and your unique circumstances. What do you need to do next for your own priorities and objectives? Do it!

You won’t be distracted by comparison if you’re captivated with purpose.

MARRIAGE AND EX-LOVERS

Friendship with your EX can't continue after marriage.
If they missed you so bad they should have married you instead of dumping you.
Now that you are married, they should please step aside while you enjoy your marriage!

Some EX lovers are stubborn! They suddenly wake up, realized all the goodies they missed and start hunting for you in the name of friendship.
If you are naive, you fall for their crap, go back to soothing them and helping them where their spouses have failed. Stories abound of married people having affairs with their EX.
Adultery is the end result of that folly.

Emotions don't die.
All the feelings you have for all your EX lovers haven't disappeared.
They are simply surpressed.
They are there, lieing dormant silently, noiselessly until the object of the emotional attraction shows up and there is an explosion!

You suddenly discover you have hidden passion that can go haywire for an EX while still under your husband's roof or while you are married to the best woman in the world.

Guard your heart is what the holy book says.
You have no single business with your EX after marriage.
They made a choice not to marry you and now that you are happily married they should leave you alone and let you enjoy your marriage in peace......

SIX LAWS OF MATURITY:

1. Stop Telling People Everything

Most people don't care, and some secretly want you to fail.

2. Choose Your Friends Wisely

The fastest way to become better is to surround yourself with better people.

3. Expect Nothing, Appreciate Everything

Be grateful for the little things in your life to find inner peace.

4. Do Your Best And Trust The Process

The harder you work, the luckier you will get.

5. Control Yourself, Not Others

Controlling others is strength. Controlling yourself is true power.

6. Learn To React Less

When you control your reaction, nobody can manipulate you.

Over-dependence on foreign ideas & foreign technology undermine Nigeria's self esteem & self reliance.
Tell me anything Nigeria has not depended on other countries? Show me anything Nigeria has not imported?
Even to make simple laws that will govern Nigeria alone, you went & imported India's Evidence Act, not to talk of Criminal/Penal code. You copy the legal system you can't operate. What is good in importing laws you can't subscribe to!
You rushed and domesticated the foreign policies you know you can't ever operate, so you will continue to answer "Giant of Africa." Unfortunately, you may also be parading as " Giant of failure" in oblivion🤦

You attend thousands of international summits yearly, and squander barrels of dollars, but how many of those summits have you exploited a single benefit for Nigeria?
If Abia State were oversea state or region, tell me any type of fashion they wouldn't have exported?
How can't our government help what we have?
Is Aba shoe factory not enough to boost Nigerian economy, both locally and internationally?
To be honest, the difference between Aba shoe factory & Italian shoe factory is just government support!
Promote Aba shoe factory now and you will see them produce quality shoes more than the Italian counterparts; because, government doesn't give them that support; you as a person hardly patronize them even though they produce things of low prices. How do you still want them to produce such qualities that will rate higher than that of their foreign counterparts when in the end, colonial and neo-colonial ulcers won't still let you patronize them? You always see anything produced in Nigeria as inferior product; forgetting that seeing what is produced in your own country as inferior simply means also seeing and presenting yourself to the world as an inferior person.

The problem of Nigeria is a collective problem, contributed in one way or the other by you and me, but the very unending question of, "when will it end," remains the....

BE WISE THIS XMAS

Misery is your potion if you choose the immediate over the important. Every Christmas tradition that leaves you broke by New Year's Day is no longer a Christmas tradition. It is a Christmas curse. And by repeating every year, it becomes a self-induced generational curse. You don't have to continue with traditions that leave you broke and broken. Paying your children's school fees is better than buying a Christmas tree, goat, clothes, rice and presents. The over-commercialisation of Christmas ends in bitterness for those who do not apply wisdom.
