Welcome to our first Designer Appreciation installment, where we focus on designers who have broke down barriers and have pushed the world of design in the next direction! 🎨

Born in Bristol Virginia, the grandson of slaves, Thomas Miller’s talent, hard work, and ambition helped him become one of the first black designers to break into mainstream graphic design. 🎯

Miller graduated and earned a Bachelors of Education with a focus on the arts in 1941 from Virginia State College. Soon after he enlisted in the army and served in WWII, achieving the rank of First Sergeant. 🏅🎖️

After joining Morton Goldsholl Associates, it was here that Miller, as chief designer, worked on high-profile campaigns such as the design for 7UP in the 1970’s. As a supporting member of the design team he also worked on the Motorola logo, Peace Corp and several other iconic designs, earning accolades for himself and for the company. 💪🏽

Miller’s hard work, dedication, and artistic talent helped him pave the way for many African-American artists and designers to come. 🙏🏽

The Come Up Installation #5

☁️ Olivia Vika is a soulful singer and songwriter from Veliky Novgorod, Russia. The now Spokane, Washington local tells her complex story through music, using her raspy, passionate voice.

☁️ Vika’s first introduction into the music industry was 5 years ago, at the age of 13. She performed at The Bartlett in Spokane, WA, in front of 100 people. The artist immediately fell in love with performing.

☁️ Since her debut, Vika has released three singles, “Nasty Woman,” “70s Haze,” “No Invite,” and recently her first full album, “Curse of the Passionfruit.”

☁️ Although she was previously categorized as an indie/alternative rock artist, “Curse of the Passionfruit” leans more towards jazz and psychedelic rock. Vika expresses that this is the sound she hopes to continue to grow into as an artist.

— THE COME UP Installation #4 —

☁️ 24-year-old Roy Blair has always had music pumping through his veins. The LA born singer/songwriter wrote his first song in the fifth grade using GarageBand on a laptop. 💻

☁️ Blair was noticed by Kevin Abstract in 2010 and sang back up on both is “Death of an American Supermodel” tour and “American Boyfriend” album.

☁️ Blair has collaborated with other BROCKHAMPTON members since then and has also released music of his own. His solo debut album “Cat Heaven” was released in 2017, featuring iconic songs such as “Perfume” and “Thunder.” His latest release was his 3 song EP “GRAFFITI” in 2019. 📀

☁️ Blair enjoys experimenting with both beats and acoustic sounds as well as nostalgic visuals in his work. He prefers to be undefined by a genre so that he is able to continue to grow in any musical direction.

☁️ On December 8, 2020 Blair tweeted that he is currently working on his second album and to be on the lookout. We can’t wait to hear more from his abstract and insightful musical mind.
