Say boo for Bezzi! Here are the highlights from last weekend’s Bewilder Basecamp: Spooky Wonders event. We had…
- A live improv show about the misunderstood elements in nature (you’re a good night, Night!)
- A shadow puppet theater where families can learn all about nocturnal animals
- An interactive constellation exhibit and arts & craft cutout of stars that can be seen from Los Angeles

It was another incredible event at thanks to the dozens of families who spent their Saturday with us, our awesome brand partners who believe in our work, and the talented crew of performers and production team who made the spooky experience so memorable and delightful.

Meet Tavis Malcolm as a kid. Today he’s the father of Morrison Malcolm and the founder of , a company that designs sleeping bags for toddlers. We asked Tavis to share a baby photo of himself and what his favorite outdoor memory was growing up. Here’s his answer:

“Every summer growing up I got to camp with my cousins at a lake in Western Washington. We would spend all day swimming and catching salamanders. Then we’d eat chips and s’mores all night before piling into a tiny camper together. It was the best!”

We cherish creating outdoor experiences for families because even decades later, you’ll never forget them. When was the last time you caught a salamander? 🦎

31/01/2023

Pismo State Beach in Southern California neighbors Oceano Dunes State Vehicle Recreation Area, which is the only drivable beach in the country. The name Pismo originates from “pismu,” which means tar in Chumash. Thousands of years ago, Chumash Native American tribes would gather pismu to seal their canoes and paddle out to the Channel Islands.

Today, Pismo SB is known for its sand dunes, surfing, and the fact that one of the largest Western Monarch Butterfly populations flocks to the Monarch Butterfly Grove every year from November to February. Another perk of Pismo SB is that you’re never too far away from the Pacific Ocean or local restaurants and grocery stores. Check out car camping itinerary at North Beach campground for you and your family to enjoy this summer.

Embrace the mess. Being outside usually means we’re going to get wet, dirty, sandy, muddy, or all of the above.

Here are four reasons we love to get messy with kids:

1. It activates our senses. By exploring how things feel, smell, and taste, we’re developing a deeper understanding of the world.

2. It fosters our imagination. What’s living in this puddle? What kind of creature can I create with mud?

3. It promotes social connection. Every mess is a pile of sensations, and it’s a chance to share what we’re feeling and doing with others.

4. It encourages responsibility. We can’t be messy forever! Learning how to clean up after messy play is just as important too.

Caves are geological wonders, and California has over 1,000 of them! The Federal Cave Protection Act of 1988 defines a cave as “any naturally occurring void, cavity, recess, or system of interconnected passages which occurs beneath the surface of the earth or within a cliff or ledge … and which is large enough to permit an individual to enter.”

Here are some of our favorite ones to explore with the family:

1. Painted Cave in Channel Islands National Park’s Santa Cruz Island. This is one of the largest sea caves in the world and it’s only accessible by boat. leads year-round sea kayaking tours.

2. Mitchell Caverns in Providence Mountains State Recreation Area. Now’s a great time to reserve a guided two-hour tour because the park is closed in July and August.

3. Lava Beds National Monument. We can explore about 20 out of more than 700 caves in this renowned caving destination. Reserve a free caving permit online and check which caves are open before you make the trip.

4. Crystal Cave in Sequoia National Park. This marble cavern was closed last year due to wildfires, but it’s aiming to be reopened in May 2023. Keep an eye out!

5. Bear Gulch Cave in Pinnacles National Park. The entire Bear Gulch Cave is only open twice a year for at least one week and up to four weeks every March and October. It’s usually closed to protect an endangered colony of Townsend’s big-eared bats.

What’s your favorite cave in California?

Sequoia National Park is often called "A Land of Giants" because it's home to groves of giant sequoias. One of the most famous ones is General Sherman Tree — the largest tree in the world standing at 275 feet tall and over 36 feet in diameter. The road to visit General Sherman is closed during the winter, but you can already start to plan and reserve a campsite at Lodgepole Campground in the spring. We designed an easy camping trip itinerary for families and first-time campers that takes you through some of the prettiest parts of the park.

23/01/2023

Playing in sand is fantastic for kids because it’s a creative, unstructured, sensory experience. When we bury each other on the beach, it specifically activates our proprioceptive sense, which is an awareness of our body in space. Building sand castles engages in problem solving: how do prevent our moat from caving in? And doing everything together is a practice in collaboration and communication.

Beach days are messy and difficult to schedule sometimes, but the skills we engage and the memories we make along the way are worth it.

What’s your favorite way to play in the sand? Spill your secrets!

Happy Lunar New Year! We’re entering the year of the rabbit so we’re celebrating the dusty desert cottontail. In the Chinese zodiac, rabbits are symbols for grace, peace, and relaxation, and we’re a fan of all three. Enjoy some fresh air today, wear red because it represents good fortune, and spend time with family and friends. It’s going to be a wonderful year 🐰

Joshua Tree National Park is the second largest national park in California, with the first being Death Valley National Park. JTNP features more than 795,000 acres, which makes it slightly larger than Rhode Island! Inside you'll find native Yucca brevifolias, aka Joshua Trees, desert tortoises, and one of the darkest skies in Southern California. It’s one of our faves because there are delicious restaurants, funky art and sounds at Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum and the Integatron. We designed a weekend camping trip itinerary so you can plan your own visit to the desert. 💥 the link in our bio!
