Behind the Crimes A true crime podcast featuring those involved in the crimes: detectives, victims and experts. What makes a criminal? Sex? Money? Revenge? Love? Humiliation?

What drives a person to ignore the laws and conventions of normal society and pushes them to perform truly dark acts? Are criminals born bad or are they a creation of their circumstances? How can detectives catch people who are intent on causing truly dreadful harm to others? What happens when that criminal has done a brilliant job covering their tracks?

‘Behind the Crimes’ - the newsletter and p

odcast - explore some of our biggest crime stories - and some of the lesser-known, fascinating cases which deserve a better understanding. I have reported on several hundred homicides in my twenty-five years as a TV correspondent. In every case, I’ve looked at the man or woman in the dock and wondered: how did you get there? And I’ve seen the families of the victims and thought how their lives have been changed irrevocably by the actions of the accused. Some of the inquiries have been true mysteries at the beginning. How detectives have solved the cases has taken ingenuity and incredible hard work. It is only when you hear the voices of the very people involved in these cases that you get an understanding of why crimes happened, the impact on victims, how detectives solved each case and what we can learn to make society safer.

How did Metropolitan Police Service NOT find Britain's longest-serving prisoner on their computers?? The killer and serial attacker had been freed yet had assaulted a woman. His victim complained - officers couldn't find him. An ITV News documentary prompted his arrest. His victim is furious.

Ron Evans was the UK's longest serving prisoner, having been convicted of murder and r**e. Police told his latest victim he was not on their systems. | ITV News West Country

There's an early sample of my new book 'Decoy' - in the papers today. We publish on Thursday.

How did a small team of rookie, female officers catch one of Britain's most-wanted men in an undercover sting operation?
What was life like for these newbies in a male-dominated world?
And what happened in a moment of pure drama when 23-year-old Michelle Tighe came face-to-face with a killer on the secret operation's final night?

While this story is set mostly in 1979, it has huge importance today:
1. The perpetrator was jailed just a few months ago for continuing attacks on woman (after the Parole Board freed him again...)
2. S*xual assault conviction rates today are actually LOWER than they were in 1979.
3. And how did the Met Police fail to find Britain's longest-serving prisoner on the Police National Computer when his latest victim - in 2022 - named him to detectives?

1979 was such an evocative time: the music, the fashion, the Winter of Discontent and the dawn of Thatcherism. It is, I hope, a book about bravery and hope that stretches over the decades.

There are lots of lighter moments along the way - some big characters.

But a real story of heroes (or heroines!) and villains.

Thanks to everyone who took part: Michelle Tighe Leonard Sally Difazio Gary Mason Rob Callaway John O'Connor

And to the many others who helped me along the way.

Michelle, 23, was a rookie officer who had volunteered for an extraordinary undercover sting, Operation Argus - to catch the so-called 'Clifton Ra**st'.
