16 June 1976 Students of Soweto stood against the Apartheid government educational policy which aimed at introducing Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in local schools. All subjects were to be taught in Afrikaans a disadvantage to the Africans and advantage to Afrikaners. The youth of 1976 stood against these oppressive government policy of which they were met with armed police brutality. 12 year old Hector Peterson was the first to be killed on that day
