Mayor, Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda, officiated the start of the start of the 97th Comrades Marathon at the Durban City Hall today. The 85km race attracted over 22 000 runners this year. Since its inception, the event continues to position Durban as a leading destination for major international sport events.

Following receipt of numerous appeals and information related to the cut-offs to be implemented at the 2024 Comrades Marathon, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has revised the cut-off times to be applied during this year’s race. This move signals increased efforts by the CMA to be both runner-focused and responsive to fresh ideas and input related to the growth and improvement of this iconic national event.
CMA Race & Operations Manager, Ann Ashworth has confirmed the removal of the first cut-off point at St. Johns Avenue, Pinetown. This amendment has been made to account for the time taken for athletes to cross the start line, the ongoing roadworks at Sherwood and public recommendations made regarding the correct pacing to be applied by athletes in the first half of the race.
Being an Up Run, the first 38km of which involves solid climbing, runners will be well advised to start the race more slowly, conserving their strength for the more undulating second half. For this reason, changes have been made to the cut-off times to be applied at Winston Park and Drummond.
The following cut-offs will be applied at the 97th running of the Comrades Marathon on 9 June 2024:

With medium sized jackets having been sold out, stock is only available in the following sizes:

South African athletes who purchase a Finishers Jacket will be able to collect it at the collection point adjacent to the main in-field Information Centre at the Comrades finish venue post-race on 9 June 2024.
International athletes can collect their jacket at the Comrades International Hospitality tent post-race.
Anyone who has ordered a Finishers’ Jacket but fails to complete the race will receive a full refund after the race.

Join Comrades fifth webinar tonight
We are 45 days away from the 97th Comrades Marathon, an Up Run starting at the Durban City Hall and finishing at the HollywoodBets Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg, covering a distance of 85,91km.
With this in mind, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) is urging runners to get on top of their training plan and login to tonight’s (Wednesday, 24 April 2024 at 19h00) fifth Comrades Webinar, tailored for the ultrarunner.
This is part of a series of online training sessions to empower runners for the 97th edition of The Ultimate Human Race, on Sunday, 9 June 2024.
Comrades Coach, Lindsey Parry has encouraged athletes to sign up and be part of the online sessions, saying, "The Comrades webinars provide a great guide towards preparations for race day. Runners will also be able to pose questions to the panel and get tailored advice to improve their running.”
Incorporating a total of eight webinars in the build-up to this year’s 49th Up Run, the webinar schedule includes general information as well as novice-specific and women-specific sessions.

Qualifying Criteria:
1. You must submit your provincially approved club name and 2024 permanent provincially issued license number.
2. You will need to complete the medical questionnaire (available by logging into your entry profile once entered).
3. You will need to run at least one qualifying race between 1 September 2023 and 6 May 2024. All qualifying races must be ASA technically compliant, no shorter than 42.2km and meet the Comrades Marathon qualifying criteria.
Please also note that our entries team is working tirelessly to confirm the qualifying information submitted. Submission of incorrect information will result in athletes being barred from participating in the race.

It is confirmed! Next year’s Comrades Marathon will be an Up Run.
The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) Board has confirmed that the 97th edition of the world’s biggest, oldest and most famous ultramarathon will start in the coastal city of Durban and finish in the inland city of Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, 9 June 2024.
CMA Chairperson, Mqondisi Ngcobo confirmed the good news after Wednesday’s Board meeting, saying, “Runners have been awaiting confirmation of the direction of next year’s race and we are pleased to announce that the 2024 Comrades Marathon will finish in the City of Choice, Pietermaritzburg.”
The last Comrades Up Run took place in 2019 prior to two consecutive editions of the epic road running event being cancelled due to Covid-19. Since then, both the 2022 and 2023 editions were Down Runs which brought the Up and Down Comrades on par with the race’s tradition of hosting a Down Run in odd years and an Up Run in even years.
