Women lead Wakanda through turmoil in ‘Black Panther’ sequel
At the start of the follow-up to 2018's groundbreaking Marvel movie "Black Panther," the kingdom of Wakanda is reeling.
STORY: The beloved King T'Challa dies at the opening of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," a script change made after actor Chadwick Boseman passed away from cancer in 2020 just before the sequel was due to start filming.
Walt Disney Co's Marvel Studios decided not to cast another actor in the the role of T'Challa. Instead, writer and director Ryan Coogler crafted a new film that put female characters at the forefront.
"There is just an effortless way in which they hold power," actor Lupita N'yongo said. "I think it is a good example for us in the world we live in, that it shouldn't be remarkable for women to be in charge. They are very capable," she added.
"Black Panther" broke ground as the first superhero movie with a predominantly Black cast. The film took in $1.3 billion at worldwide box offices, and became the only superhero movie ever nominated for best picture at the Oscars.
The movie also introduces an underwater civilization called Talokan that is descended from an ancient Mayan community.
Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta plays Namor, the wing-footed leader of Talokan. Marvel worked with consultants on Mesoamerican culture to develop the world and its costumes and stories. Huerta learned to speak Mayan for the role.
"We were taught to be ashamed of our roots, about who we are, our indigenous heritage for a long time, 500 years," Huerta said. "Finally we are embracing that."

South Korea, U.S. conduct missile drill in response to North Korea missile test
South Korea and the U.S. military fired a volley of missiles into the sea in response to North Korea's launch of a ballistic missile over Japan, Seoul said on Wednesday (October 5), as Pyongyang's longest-range test yet drew international condemnation.
Nuclear-armed North Korea test-fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) farther than ever before on Tuesday (October 4), sending it soaring over Japan for the first time in five years and prompting a warning for residents there to take cover.
South Korean and American troops staged a missile drill of their own in response, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said on Wednesday.
Each side fired a pair of U.S.-made ATACMS short-range ballistic missiles, according to a statement.
The military separately confirmed that a South Korean Hyunmoo-2 missile failed shortly after launch and crashed, but caused no casualties.
U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida condemned North Korea's test in the "strongest terms," the European Union called it a "reckless and deliberately provocative action", and U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the launch and said it was a violation of Security Council resolutions.
The United States asked the U.N. Security Council to meet on North Korea on Wednesday but diplomats said China and Russia are opposed to a public discussion by the 15-member body.
