The Write Attention a podcast for emerging writers

20/10/2023

We are still contemplating Episode 9, especially the themes or ideas we are called to over and over again in our writing.

What is one subject, idea, or theme you are drawn to in your writing?

For guest, Colette Walker, that subject is death because so much in the transition, the funeral, the rituals, the burials, etc. all speak to life.

If you have not yet listened to Episode 9, you can listen wherever you get your podcasts or on our website here: https://writeattention.podbean.com/e/personal-revelation-audience-responsibility/.

Hello Dear Listeners,

Episode 8 is LIVE: https://writeattention.podbean.com/e/cultivating-and-caring-for-our-creativity/

Jeannetta and Brittany dive into questions about boundaries, balancing work and life, weathering those summer social invitations, and finding ways to feed their imagination and creativity.

Working full time changes quite a bit about daily life, but we want to stay consistent with keeping writing high on the list of priorities.

For all you working writers, parent writers, caregiver writers, have-all-the-responsibilities writers, feel free to weigh in in the comments with your own answers to the questions posed in this episode. We would love to hear from you!

ICYMI, Episode 7 with guest co-host, Arianna Reiche, unpacks writing about Place, Peculiarity, & Persistence. Arianna, Jeannetta, and Brittany discuss ways we are able to write about place and how that may challenge common conceptions. We also discuss genres that embrace peculiar perspectives, persisting through life changes, and bearing those editing bruises.

How does genre offer possibility when writing about places we may have a complex relationship with? How do we honor our own experience of place that may be outside what is known or expected?

The episode is on our website: https://writeattention.podbean.com/e/place-peculiarity-persistence/ or wherever you get your podcasts.

At some point, challenges will arise when we come to our own creative space. Sometimes those challenges are with our own bodies, some with our hearts and some with our minds. They can make us feel like we cannot write or be creative. And while that may be true every now and then, how do we meet our creativity where we are?

In Episode 6 of The Write Attention with guest , Brittany asks, "Returning to writing from a place of pleasure when you are in pain—or even [from a place of] catharsis—if you're not finding relief, what's the new baseline where you can bring yourself to still commune with your creativity? Where is that space for you that you're comfortable to continue creating?"

Dear Self,

When was the last time you slowed down to savor the pleasure and delight writing gives? Have you read your words back to yourself to stand in their power? Will you speak them aloud so they may know their own gravity as they fill a space?

From host, Brittany Felder, in Episode 1: "Creating copies and different versions of your stories is such a good idea. It allows you to play! It allows you to practice. It allows you to be the creative, free spirit that you are and/or want to be. And it allows you to come back and say, 'How do I now lead with an intention?'"

What genre gives your imagination the most room to expand?

Tomorrow, April 5th, we will be discussing Octavia Butler's autobiographical article, "Positive Obsession" in an attempt to examine what genre does for one's imagination and how writers, especially Black writers & writers of color, can benefit from the wisdom of Butler's response.

Here is a snippet from the conversation. Jeannetta says, "The writers that I admire, like Butler and Oyeyemi, operate within some sort of headspace or internal assurance over their ability to create anything they want to. And that kind of confidence, regardless of craft, is so invaluable that you know you have control to create worlds, you have the ability to and you want to and you love doing it. I think that's a gift."

For all you science fiction writers out there, how does writing science fiction differ from your writing (or reading) experiences with other genres?

Wednesday, April 5th, we will talk about science fiction in Episode 3. Tune in and share your thoughts about writing in a particular genre or the discussion with us here!

30/03/2023

Episode 3's discussion touches on imagining, identity, science fiction, and continuing education outside of traditional academic spaces.

We consider our own answers to a question Octavia Butler was often asked, "What good is Science Fiction to Black people?"

And though the conversation focuses on one specific genre, the subject elicits questions about what writing within a particular genre does for your work. Which genres do you write in and what ways do they help you imagine? And what ways are you continuing to learn about writing?

Share in the comments below which genres you write in and what they help you imagine!

Episode 2 launches TOMORROW!

What does permission look like for you? Have you given yourself permission to write about things your community has rules about keeping quiet? Permission can look like your random, creative side stretching and trying new things or “stealing” what you’ve seen other writers do in order to practice and improve your own writing. It can also look like putting the words you truly want to say on the page and building around that foundation.

When it comes to possibility, surrendering to a loss of control over parts of your writing process, where that writing goes, or even how the story is communicated can open up doors to the new and unexpected. Guides provide new paths to explore, ideas to contemplate, and expand our own notions of what is possible on the page; those same guides can provide access to permission. If someone else has written freely and with abandon, created new forms, or told a story in a way you’ve never seen before, you can too!

Tune in to Episode 2: Permission & Possibility on Saturday, March 4th!

When questioning your capabilities or as a writer, what are the most important things to you and how do you stay in touch with them throughout your project?

We also answer the following questions in episode 2:

1. How do you steal while still being original?

2. Do you feel like you already have an inclination where you need to go, which form you need to use, do you experiment with different forms, or do you just start writing? What comes first?

3. How do you navigate when people say a poem is too abstract? My expectation is that a poem will always be somewhat abstract. Do you get what people are saying when they say it is?

4. How do you honor permission in your work? In what ways are you giving yourself permission? In what way are you noticing you are not? How do you address this in your writing?
