A Nation in Denial, a Planet in Peril.

Japan is the most terrifying nation on Earth if you are a dolphin or a whale, or for that matter any living thing that lives in the waters around Japan. It should also be seen as terrifying to anyone who lives in Japan or anywhere else on the Pacific Rim, if they had the courage to look the truth in the eye, rather than to remain in constant and fearful denial of the radioactive elephant in the room.
The Japanese media has very little to say about Fukushima. The censored news seeps out in a intermittent trickle and is available for those who bother to pay attention, but it is never reported for what it - a civilization shattering, ecological apocalypse in the making.
Japan does not want to inform the world of the truth and Japanese pride prevents the world from assisting Japan to find a solution.
The international public is in such denial that Tokyo was foolishly chosen as the site for the 2020 Olympics despite the fact there may not be a Tokyo in 2020 to actually host the events. Such a thought is unthinkable and therefore unspeakable.
Such a prediction will be met of course with howls of indignation in response to my Cassandrian views of doom and gloom. It is to be expected. People do not want to hear such things. It causes anxiety and leads to depression. After all, what can be done about it? So let the party continue, and let us all forget that Cassandra was right and her curse was to not be believed.
It reminds me of when I was a child and I spilt a bottle of Indian ink on the hard word floor of our house. I was scared of the consequences for what would happen when my father returned home. So I poured bleached on the ink stain but that only made the problem worse. All I could think of after that failed attempt to clean up the damage was to cover the scene of the crime with a carpet and hope that my father would not notice. When he came home, he noticed of course and the guilt on my face quickly overcame the denial in my voice. The consequence that followed was felt quite severely.
The Japanese media understands the seriousness of the problem yet the powers that be feel it is their duty to keep their own people in the dark. The message they continually churn out is, "Yes it is a serious situation, but it is not so serious that our illustrious government will not be able to handle it."
In 2011 when I appeared on a Japanese television show, the audience actually gasped when I said that their government was lying to them about Fukushima. The moderator for the show pointed his finger at me and viciously yelled, "you lie."
However the evidence cannot be buried forever. And this week further evidence was tossed onto a Japanese beach after scores of dolphins were found dead, all with white lungs. The cause of death was ischemia, an affliction linked to slow exposure to radiation.
As the radioactive groundwater seeps outward from Fukushima every day towards Tokyo, the city carries on, deliberately oblivious of the deadly threat creeping ever closer. It can't be seen, it can't be heard, there is no smell. It is simply the slow stalking, quiet threat of the twisting insidious tentacles of an extremely powerful force created in the bowels of a manmade reactor and unleashed by the unpredictable forces of nature.
The dolphins in the waters around Japan have had to run the gauntlet of vicious killers in places like Futo, Iki and Taiji for decades. They have been slaughtered by the tens of thousands by the harpooners of Iwate. And now there appears to be absolutely no escape from the terrible destruction caused by humankind. Those that avoid the spears and harpoons of the killers now face the invisible spears of an insane society.
There are no safe waters around Japan and now the Fukushima poison has been found in tuna off of California and salmon off Alaska.
Pandora's lethal box was cracked wide open on March 11th, 2011 and every day since then, tons of radioactive water has seeped into the groundwater reserves or has been pumped directly into the sea.
It does not take a nuclear engineer to understand that dumping radioactive material anywhere is not the wisest thing to do. However business decisions are not made taking into account long term effects on the environment or human health. Our economic system is dependent upon short term considerations for both profits and politics.
The nuclear age began in Japan with the horrific incineration of tens of thousands of people and yet Japan of all nations embraced the nuclear genie and built the reactors to bring forth the gift of energy. Unfortunately they placed their reactors in areas prone to disruption by earthquakes and tsunamis, and that coupled with political corruption and a society that unquestionably believes every word that their government tells them brought them to the place they find themselves now - before the slowly opening door of of Fukushima consequences.
Subconsciously the Japanese have always understood the threat of the nuclear genie. They brought it to the movie screens in the form of Gojira. Godzilla represented the consequences of unleashed radiation. Today Godzilla is rising from the depths of the sea. An invisible, silent monster of unfathomable power and toxicity. The dead dolphins on the beach in Japan have been struck down by this monster, their bodies are the harbinger's of the rising of this Pandoric vengeance against a humanity that has chosen to live outside the laws of nature.
My Cassandrian predictions for the future are these. 1. These white lunged dolphin deaths will increase. 2. radioactive levels in North Pacific fish will increase. 3. there will be rising levels of cancers in Japan radiating out from Fukushima. 4. government efforts to suppress information will increase. 5. The Olympics will not be held in Japan in 2020.
What should we do? 1. Make Fukushima clean-up a priority by all nations. 2. Expose the truth and demand that a united effort by all nations be made to address the problem and to find solutions. 3. Dismantle all nuclear reactors. 4. Dispose of all nuclear weapons. In other words put the nuclear genie back into the bottle.
My final prediction about all of this is that none of the above solutions will be implemented because the human species is ecologically insane and I will be viewed as insane for pointing it out.
