Emergency services called to Manchester school fire

A huge emergency services response is underway after a fire was reported at The Dean Trust Ardwick Secondary School in this evening.

The fire, reportedly on the first floor in a school building, on , has caused the road to become blocked with a number of fire engines tonight.

Firefighters are in attendance currently tackling the ongoing blaze. Pictures from the scene show a large fire service response at the incident, along with police.

The cause of the fire or any further details have not yet been confirmed.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have said “At around 7:30pm this evening (Thursday, 4th January), firefighters were called to reports of a fire at the in .

“Eight fire engines from Gorton, Moss Side, Salford, Philips Park, Blackley, Manchester Central and Withington fire stations, as well as several specialist appliances are currently at the scene involving a fire in a classroom of the school.

“Firefighters are using hose reels and breathing apparatus to bring the fire under control. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have closed Stockport Road and ask residents to avoid the area until further notice. Road closures are expected to be in place for some time.” .

Fire crews called to fire at bungalow

More than 20 firefighters are at the scene of a large house fire in Cambridgeshire.

The emergency services were called to the blaze in Hundred Road, , near , at about 18:00 GMT.

Cambridgeshire Police said people in the area had been evacuated from their homes as crews tried to bring the flames under control.

The public has been urged to avoid the area until further notice.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said its crews were "at the scene working hard to tackle the fire and prevent it from spreading".

The service said firefighters from March, Chatteris, Manea and Stanground in were currently at the scene along with the turntable Aerial ladder.

A spokesperson said on social media: "We'd urge people to stay away from the area so crews can tackle the fire safely.

"There are also lots of emergency services at the scene so it is very busy.

"Those living in the area should keep their windows closed if they're being impacted by the smoke."

Man treated by paramedics after fire

A man was rescued by firefighters after a blaze ravaged his home.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters tackled a flat fire on Well Street in .

Half of a two-roomed flat on the first floor above a shop was damaged by fire. One man left the building before the Brigade arrived and was treated on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

The Brigade confirmed they were called at 1559 and the fire was under control by 1653. Fire crews from Bethnal Green, Stoke Newington, Shoreditch and Homerton fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Emergency services called as gas main ruptures

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters are responding to a gas leak on Malvern Road in West Kilburn after a gas main ruptured.

Station Commander Tom Sharp, who is at the scene, said: "Crews are working closely with emergency services to carry out evacuations of the local area. There is a strong smell of gas and we encourage people to keep their windows and doors closed.

"Multi-agency service partners are working to make the scene safe and are likely to be on scene through the night."

The London Fire Brigade said they were called at 1650. Fire crews from Paddington, North Kensington, Kensington, Hammersmith and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

Police respond to reports of car travelling wrong way on Motorway

Police teams rushed to a motorway carriageway after reports a vehicle was travelling the wrong way.

Police have said “Yesterday we responded to over 50 reports of a vehicle travelling the wrong way on toll Road in Staffordshire.

“Tactical contact had to be used in order to end the vehicle progress, protect the public and safeguard the driver.

“Thankfully no injuries caused.”

Car seized after driver found with alleged fraudulent papers

Police teams stopped a vehicle on Horton Park Avenue in yesterday evening as initial checks suggested it was not insured before seizing the vehicle after the driver showed his paperwork.

A spokesperson for the team said: "The driver produced two certificates, both believed to be fraudulent due to discrepancies.

"The vehicle was seized for no insurance.

"Further enquiries are ongoing."

Cinema goes into lockdown as gunman on the loose

The emergency services are responding to an incident at Sanghas Newsagents, Lower House Lane, Liverpool.

A lone gunman wearing flip flops entered the retail premises brandishing a firearm before shooting.

The cinema has been placed in a lockdown amid fears a gunman is 'on the loose'.

Armed police are standing on guard outside the Showcase Cinema in , with the police helicopter continuing the search for the suspect in the Norris Green area, Liverpool.

Merseyside Police put out an appeal for people to stay away from the cinema.

A post on X from the force's contact centre said: 'Due to an ongoing Police incident at the Showcase Cinema on East Lancs Road, please remain away from the area at this time.'

Later police in Merseyside said “We can confirm that emergency services are at the Showcase cinema in Liverpool following reports shots were fired this evening, Wednesday 3 January.

“At around 8.50pm officers received a report that shots had been fired at Showcase Cinemas on East Lancashire Road after a man entered the premises carrying a firearm.
About 20 minutes before there was an incident at a business on Lower House Lane where a firearm was discharged.

“Armed officers and local policing officers are in the area and members of the public are advised to stay indoors whilst the incident ongoing.

“At this stage no-one has been injured. Anyone with information which could help the police should call 999.
The incident is fast moving and we will provide a further update as soon as possible.”

A spokesperson for Showcase Cinemas said: “We are aware of an incident at our cinema and surrounding area in Liverpool.

“The safety and welfare of our staff and customers is always our number one priority and we can confirm no one was injured.

“We would like to thank our team members and the local police for their swift responses to this active investigation.”

Following an extensive manhunt police confirmed a man had been detained. The 49-year-old man was arrested by armed officers at about 04:46 GMT in Fazakerley after a Taser was used.

Officers responded to three separate incidents involving shots being fired but no-one was injured.

The man was detained on suspicion of possession of a Section 1 firearm with intent to endanger life and robbery.

He has been taken to a police station in Merseyside where he remains in custody.

Sixty firefighters tackle building fire

Around 60 firefighters have been tackling a fire involving a building on the High Street in .

The Fire Service Control Room received around 20 emergency calls reporting the blaze shortly before 6pm when fire crews from Hamble, Hightown, Botley, St Mary’s, Redbridge, Fareham, Eastleigh and Portchester were mobilised.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) said “The building which is used as a garage was well alight when firefighters first arrived on the scene, but fortunately there have been no injuries reported.

“Supported by the aerial ladder, water carriers and a specialist environment protection vehicle, firefighters wearing sets of breathing apparatus continue to work to prevent the blaze from spreading using hose reels and jets.

“The incident is set to be scaled down with four fire engines expected to remain on scene into the night.

“Hamble Lane has been closed with residents asked to use Satchell Lane instead.”

Child rushed to hospital after collision on Bradford Road

The emergency services in responded to a rush hour road traffic incident in the area of the city.

The collision happened on Fagley Road, near its junction with Leeds Road/Gain Lane and Intake Road.

Traffic diversions were put in place with bus services diverting as a result.

West Yorkshire Police have said: "At 4.28pm, police were called by the ambulance service who were responding to a report of a collision involving a child pedestrian on Fagley Road, Bradford. The pedestrian was taken to hospital to be checked over and the road was reopened a short time later."

Emergency response in Halifax

The emergency services and Air Medics were dispatched to the area of the just after 630pm this evening following reports of a serious incident at the car park of a busy supermarket.

Police, first responders, ambulances and the Hazardous Area Response Team were joined by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance after reports of a serious road traffic incident.

Local contributors have spoken of the incident occurring at the smaller car park which is located at the rear of the Lidl store on Hayley Hill with emergency services activity focused there and on North Bridge.

Batley man left with serious injuries after targeted attack

West Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was seriously assaulted inside a property in overnight.

Detectives from Kirklees District CID have said they would like to speak to anyone who has information about the incident which happened at Ealing Court, Batley, overnight between 11.30pm on Monday and 12.30am today.

West Yorkshire Police said two suspects, described as white males, entered a house on the street and attacked a man in his 30s with a bladed weapon.

The victim suffered a wound to his left arm which was serious but not life-threatening. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

The police have said: "Detectives are treating the matter as a targeted attack and would like to speak to anyone who saw or has footage of males behaving suspiciously outside the house late on January 1 or fleeing it on January 2.

"Anyone who can assist enquiries is asked to contact Kirklees CID on 101 referencing crime number 13140001500.

"Information can also be given anonymously to the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111."

Emergency response after stray fireworks set 2 buildings alight

Fire crews were called out to reports of a fire affecting outbuildings

Firefighters extinguished the fire affecting outbuildings in South Woodham Ferrers.

Essex County Fire & Rescue Service said “We were called to reports of bushes on fire in Leeward Road today at 12.12am and crews from Basildon, Rayleigh Weir and Wickford attended.

“When firefighters arrived they found that the fire had spread to two outbuildings; a shed measuring approximately 5 metres by 5 metres and a garage measuring approximately 5 metres by 10 metres.

“Crews extinguished the fire by 1.29am and remained at the scene until 3.10am to dampen down and check for hotspots.

“It is believed the fire was caused by a stray firework.”

Plane diverted and makes emergency landing after issue

A transatlantic flight which was travelling from Italy to the United States was diverted to Shannon Airport this morning after a technical emergency was declared on board.

The Delta Air Lines plane was travelling from Rome to Boston when it started to experience a technical difficulty.

The plane, an Airbus 330/900, then diverted to Shannon in County Clare. The plane landed safely at 11.49am and was met by emergency services and airport staff.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

Firefighters tackle church fire

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to reports of a fire at a church on Bourne Hill in , .

A small part of the church was alight. There were no reports of any injuries.

The Fire Brigade confirmed it was called at 1358 and the fire was surrounded by 1502. Firefighters from Edmonton, Hornsey and Enfield fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A driver arrested after crash and chase

A man has been arrested after crashing his car near the outskirts of .

Police have confirmed the incident occurred in South Bradford. They have said it followed a short pursuit with an Audi A4 on New Year's Eve and ended as the car crashed into bollards and the driver made off on foot.

After a short foot chase, a male was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police, and driving while unfit through drink.

According to witnesses a mother and daughter whose car the Audi also collided into narrowly escaped injury.

Fire crews called as flames from hedge fire spread

Firefighters were called to reports of a hedge alight in Grange Road, at 01.50.

Two fire engines attended, and crews extinguished the flames, which had started to spread to two nearby houses. Firefighters used high-pressure hose reel and high pressured fans to clear the properties of any smoke.

No injuries were reported, and the cause is not yet known.

At 23:51 fire crews from Bourne, Corby Glen & Stamford fire stations were called out to an incident involving a garage and number of sheds on fire at Scottlethorpe Road, .

Four Hose reels, one main jet and three breathing apparatus were used to extinguish the fire.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

Incident at Gym leads police to address with armed units deployed

Police officers in responded to a reported robbery and altercation at a Gym and their enquiries led them to according to witnesses to a residential address being raided and searched.

The drama unfolded in the Lidget Green area of the city after 8.30pm today and has seen the National Police Air Service helicopter, dog units and armed officers race to Lidget Place. Roads were blocked and residents told to stay indoors as police carried out a swoop of the property.

Police update after bomb squad called to Halifax street

Following the police operation in a Halifax suburb, police have now issued an update.

West Yorkshire police have confirmed a suspicious object has now been safely disposed of following a police operation in .

Police had located a potentially suspicious object inside the house on Keighley Road, Illingworth on Saturday morning (30/12/23) while conducting forensic searches as part of an investigation into fi****ms offences.

Specialist army colleagues have now carried out the controlled destruction of the object in a sealed area outside of the property.

A cordon which had been put in place for resident’s safety is being reviewed and will be taken down as soon as possible.

Inspector Ryan Stockton of Calderdale Police said: “I want to thank residents for their understanding and patience while this operation was carried out. I also want to apologise for any disruption it may have caused.

“The deployment of specialist resources may understandably have caused some concern, but it is entirely normal for them to attend in such operations in order to take every possible precaution to ensure public safety.

“A suspicious object found at the property has now been safely disposed of, and we are reviewing the cordon with an aim to take it down as soon as possible.

“Investigations will continue and two men who were arrested on suspicion of fi****ms offences remain in custody this evening.”
