To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Ferrari decided it would build the closest thing to a road-going Formula 1 car the company had ever built. In 1995, Ferrari unveiled the extraordinary F50 at the Geneva Motor Show.

Ferrari used a composite construction monocoque chassis, paired with an engine derived from the 1990 Formula One car.

The front suspension was mounted directly to the carbon tub. The rear of the carbon tub had the engine bolted to it, exactly like an F1 car; the engine provided the load bearing for the rear suspension.

The F50’s V12 4.7-litre engine was derived directly from the Formula 1 unit used on the F640/641 (F1-89/F1-90). Another of the benefits of its unique (for a road-going Ferrari) stressed member engine chassis design was that it was effectively both a Berlinetta and Barchetta, meaning its roof was bolted on to the tub but could be removed to provide a fantastic race style open cockpit.

The process took around 90 minutes and even though the handbook says the owner could do it, you need an experienced technician to do it. It’s definitely not a Spider/GTS.

Great photograph of two F50s side by side, roof on and roof off.

Lamborghini has canceled the plans for a full-electric supercar in 2026. Instead, they will continue with hybrid drive trains.

Skepticism around the technology grows. While performance won't be an issue in an EV, some emotional aspects — like the sound of the Huracan's V10 engine — can't be replicated, said Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann.

That leaves only Ferrari as the only supercar brand with a purely electric vehicle in the near future.

Ferrari F40 in a slightly different shade.

In the late '80s, if you wanted a new F40 from Ferrari at the time, there were a few condition. One of these was the color - it had to be Rosso Corsa. It was the only color offered new from the factory. So every F40 that left the factory was painted in Rosso Corsa.

Some customers, such as the Sultan of Brunei, had their cars sent directly from Ferrari to Pininfarina to have some details changed to their liking, and one of these was the paint. Granted, the modifications had to be within reason, as Pininfarina worked very closely with Ferrari to accommodate such customers.

Over the years though, we have seen several examples pop up sporting new, stand-out shades. For this particular example, the owner chose a classic Ferrari color, Azzurro Hyperion. It has been used on countless Ferrari models throughout the years, new to old, including the 1969 365GT, making it a color code with history.

This F40 being the only such example to wear Azzurro Hyperion. On the inside, the interior was re-trimmed to Blu Scuro Alcantara. Another long-standing Ferrari color.
Powering the F40 is a punchy Twin-Turbo 2.9L V8 making 471hp, mated to a 5-Speed manual transmission.

However, in this specific example, the owner had the gearbox upgraded to the LM spec gearbox. It also has a Tubi-style LM straight pipe exhaust to let that V8 howl. New Brembo brakes were slapped on to give the car more stopping speed.

Thumbs up or down?

On day 4 of Gran Turismo Adriatica we climbed into the Montenegrin mountains on one of the country’s best roads which later took us to Bosnia and Herzegovina for lunch, and our next stop of the trip.

Later the same afternoon we arrived to the historic city of Mostar where we were welcomed with a red carpet reception on the hotel grounds with music, drinks, and a happy crowd of curious locals.

Then it was time for dinner in the old centre of Mostar nearby the famous old bridge over the Neretva river.

Day 3 of Gran Turismo Adriatica was our second day at Porto Montenegro, and the day was perfect for a shorter drive up and down Montenegro’s best roads. The hillclimb from Budva to Podgorica is nothing short of fantastic.

In the afternoon we stopped in Budva for lunch in the harbour. The locals welcomed us at the parking area beside the ancient city walls with great enthusiasm.

Day 1 of Gran Turismo Adriatica took us down the beautiful Croatian coastal road from Split to Slano. Lamborghini squeezed out one extra special edition from the Huracan platform. The final iteration of the product family will be the Huracan STJ, a refined version of the already bonkers STO.

The STJ, or Super Trofeo Jota, gets a spectacular livery and an upgraded handling package, shaving one second of the Nardo test track in southern Italy.

Like the STO, the Huracán STJ delivers a maximum power output of 640 CV at 8000 rpm and a torque of 565 Nm (at 8000 rpm) controlled by a 7-speed dual clutch (LDF - Lamborghini Doppia Frizione) gearbox, combined with the rear-wheel drive only.

The price is unknown, but we assume it is at least 100 000 euros more than a standard STO.
