"What matters most is that you started working on things. It doesn't matter how rough the draft or the first outcome would be because by then, you'd already have the idea of which to change and improve, And then before you know it, you're already done," our Associate Editor Elorie Rose Tichangco notes for this week's semicolumn.

Despite the emergence of architectural technologies, calamities are yet to be inevitable. With environmental crises being the biggest consideration, the notion of a disaster-resilient community is only imperative during these times. The best infrastructure solutions for keeping a community safe are determined by which natural disasters pose the greatest risk. Consider high-risk zones, structure materiality, and, most importantly, the safety of its users when building new construction.

Due to the emergence of improved technology and structural developments, society tends to be blinded by the idea that modern advancements are the only elements needed to move forward. To set it right, a nation's progress is not solely measured through top-notch facilities and extravagant infrastructures. Less statistically, a well-developed country depends on how the community adapts to the evolving world while still preserving its roots in the cultural aspect. After all, our heritage contributes to shaping our identity as a community.

Many Filipinos thought of the Marcos regime as a revival of architectural forms, with the way Brutalism was used as an architectural styleโ€”imposing, monolithic, and bleak, to say the least. Truth be told, some of the edifices built had underlying horrors from the past.

Happy Independence Day!

On this day about 124 years ago, revolutionary leader Emilio Aguinaldo declared the countryโ€™s freedom after 300 years of Spanish rule. Although there was another date considered for the celebration of the countryโ€™s independence, June 12, 1898 was not only the very first milestone in our history books but it was the only date wherein Filipinos themselves declared the country free from oppressors.

May we always remember every fallen hero who continuously re-sparked the spirit of nationalism for us to live as we now do and to remind ourselves that those efforts should never be wasted. Our nationโ€™s freedom and identity will always be what we make of it.

Today is the day we pay respect to the gallant warriors of our history.

On this day, 9th of April, we commemorate the lives of Filipinos and Americans who suffered and sacrificed their lives for the democracy of our country during the Fall of Bataan.

May we always remember our timeless history as we go forward to a hopeful future. Thank you, Veterans!

A world where women thrive is a better world for all.

Architecture has often been perceived as a highly male-dominated field. However, there are female architects who are transforming the business and trying to motivate young female architects to keep going, keep dreaming, and not be scared to carve their own paths in the field of architecture.

Today and everyday, we celebrate your wisdom, beauty, and art.

Literature is one way to express. Writing can look simple to others yet not everyone has the passion to touch a readerโ€™s heart and mind. It takes flaming desire, diligence, and wisdom to create such a strong piece. Because through it, we are able to feel different sets of emotions, experience a sequence of events, and widen our perspectives.

The CAUP Journal is encouraging talented artists who wish to share some of their literary pieces. Submit yours and captivate the hearts of our fellow dreamers!

February 25, 1986, was the day when Filipinos recaptured their long-lost freedom and restored democracy through the peaceful EDSA revolution. Millions of Filipinos marched down Epifanio delos Santos Avenue 36 years ago to reclaim the long-lost freedom and democracy that the Filipinos now enjoy.

We reminisce about the victory that brought power back to the hands of the Filipino people. History is the seed of today. It is not cruel nor kind. It is not just, nor does it favor anyone. History is the truth.

"I have innately been an art enthusiast and have been exploring whatever media I have. Pens and pencils own most of my history since it is what I always had throughout high school; I always had a pen and a paper or a coffee shop tissue. But my first year in architecture brought me a lot of new media.

This portrait of our late Shih Tzu, Hachiko, was my very first pet portrait. The pandemic had me yearning for productivity and gave my unused media a try -- my soft pastels, black charcoal and white charcoal pencil. Thus, the artwork."

It's Rizal Day!

On the 125th anniversary of his martyrdom, The CAUP Journal honors Dr. Jose Rizal and his contributions to the Filipino people. Rizal, during his short but meaningful life, furthered the advancement of knowledge through the practice of science, the quest for truth, the study of life.

May we be inspired by the life and bravery of Rizal. As he did, may we constantly keep our country's future in mind and put our own interests aside. Let us continue to do our part in our little way for the love of God and our country.

"For Christmas is tradition timeโ€”
Traditions that recall
The precious memories down the years,
The sameness of them all." โ€“ Helen Lowrie Marshall

Christmas day is more than receiving and giving gifts. It is more than spending time with your friends, families and loved ones. Perhaps the true meaning of Christmas dwells on one's own experience and can only be truly reflected upon humans' inner goodnessโ€”kindess.

May we all celebrate Christmas with love, joy and kindness even in their simplest forms.

Have a Merry Christmas, Arkistas!

Indeed, an artistic way of portraying a color wheel! Let's meet the artist and hear his insights about his fascinating art.

"Hi, peeps! I am Khel Tapang, 19 years old, currently a 2nd year BS Architecture student. I have a natural aptitude for drawing, but I dived into drawing portraits when the pandemic struck last 2020. When things became uncertain, my drawing practices led me into accepting commissions.

This portrait of Sir Isaac Newton was drawn when I was in my first year with watercolor as its base, and I used Faber Castell Colored Pencils with the details. In my experience, colored drawing is a lot complicated than graphite or monochromatic portraits, yet I made it more intricate with this color wheel portrait."

"We think sorrow only gives us pain that we sometimes thought we wouldn't overcome. But it's ironic as it triggers us to bloom and grow," our Layout Artist Anne Rhegine Baldonado notes for this week's semicolumn.

"We all fear failure, and that is valid. Take time to focus on what is in front of you, not on the voices at the back of your head," our Literary Editor Danielle Aquino notes for this week's semicolumn.

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary.

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception refers to the Catholic doctrine that Mary, from the very moment of her conception by Saint Anne, was never stained by original sin, thus, she was preserved free from the effects of the sin of Adam and Eve.

The word immaculate literally means pure, or without blemish. Let us remember the solemnity and belief in the sinless lifespan of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Today we commemorate the bravery of one of the Philippines' most celebrated heroes and the Father of the Philippine Revolution, Andres Bonidacio. His love for our country has been renowned throughout our nation's history, which reminds us that our homeland's beauty if worth fighting for.

In celebration of his 158th birth anniversary, let us reminisce how great of a Filipino Bonifacio was in attaining our country's freedom.
