Once a year I try and gently clean my father and grandfather’s service artifacts. My grandfather has a suitcase of things that I’ve only looked at once and it feels irreverent to photograph them for this medium, so I’ll simply share a picture of the box they are contained in. The items include metals awarded to my grandfather and N**i paraphernalia that includes a bloodied N**i flag. I used to ask my grandfather about his memories, but it would upset him so I left it alone. He was one of the men that ran onto the beach of Normandy and lost many of his friends.

Unfortunately, freedom comes from the sacrifice of men and women who have had to disrupt violent oppression where it seeks to operate. Maybe there’s not a fitting way to thank Veterans who sacrificed so much. But we can start with an effort that extends beyond Memorial Day, with reverence for the ideals they served and by the civility we extend to our fellow citizens in everyday life, under the design and order of our Nation’s Constitution.

Be law abiding. Be cool and be kind with the freedom you’ve been given. The law may give you the freedom of expression, but use that gift to express only that which helps to make the world a better place. The type of place our grandfathers and grandmothers fought to protect, extending far beyond our neighborhoods. Love the Country our Veterans gave their lives to serve even when you aren’t happy with a particular rule or representative. We the people are the Country. Our Country is a function of civility winning the day and about more than one or two “representatives” on either side of an argument pontificating about all the answers they pretend to have for every man made problem.

Our Country is carried by those who operate at lower levels of duty, doing what they’re told to do, with courage and perseverance, sometimes unsung in the shadows. Honor them with how you behave especially when no one may be watching for that is where the truest virtue can be found, without notoriety or conspicuousness for praise.

Special thoughts for our Veterans and their loved ones on this and every day. It’s not enough, but Thank You.

When I see people writing happy Mother’s Day it throws me off because I think oh dang it’s Mother’s Day today and I haven’t surprised my Mom yet with her happy Mother’s Day extravaganza. But, I know it’s always on a Sunday. It still makes me feel bad because now it shows what a bad son I am that I even doubted my clairvoyance about the correct date. Am I a jerk? I don’t think I’m a jerk. I love my mom. She’s my number one lady. But then I still wonder. Can we just stop this madness and say happy Mother’s Day on the correct day to avoid the emotional trauma and doubt?

God bless and extra hard positive vibes to our listeners celebrating their Moms who went to Heaven. If I didn’t have my Mom here 🌎 that’s where I want her to be because it’s the only place perfect enough for her. No matter what they did wrong they did something right. It’s not easy giving birth ya jerk!

Have a good thought about your mom and reach out. If it wasn’t for her you would be like the nothingness in the Never Ending Story, only more nothing, like for reals, not in the figurative way, but literally nothing.

My mom sends me her art so here’s one of her latest masterpieces. Enjoy and Happy Pre-Mother’s Day to all you amazing Moms.

I witnessed some subhuman activities during a recent trip involving air travel. But, I noticed in each instance when a person had been rude to a fellow traveler I was not the only one looking on with disappointment. Someone would step in to lend aid. Each instance of inspiring kindness was so overshadowing, I can barely remember the details of the predicating offense. Now what stands out in my memory are the quiet acts of grace I was lucky enough to see that reminded me that there is good in the world.

Look for this good especially when it’s needed and you’ll find it, wherever evil rears its ugly head. Sometimes its mere existence is good enough to vanquish evil. Often it may be harder to see because the most virtuous acts are done quietly in the shadows with unpretentious valor.

Here’s class act Bob Hope bringing joy to service members as memorialized in the USO at LAX. It’s always best to take two pics especially when Pierce is in it to try and get a respectable result.

If you do something in the quiet shadows of your own struggles that is so amazingly glorious is it wrong to share it? My mom loves these meals from Cracker Barrel, so to surprise her with it I had to pick it up early and kept it a bit warmer using the heater and seat warmer. It’s almost pathetic how pleased I was with myself. I made it 3 days into 2024 before failing in my effort to be more humble about my mediocre accomplishments.

I’ve done a few juvenile things. Once while in school I wrote on the white board that ‘Howie rules’ as this was a point of contention in some simpleton circles. Unfortunately, it was in black permanent marker (which I did not know), so the teacher had to ask who the culprit was. I confessed with a tinge of shame mixed with pride for Howie was one of the fiercest coolest class acts who ever wore a football uniform.
