This Wildlife Wednesday, to celebrate National Marine Week, we are looking at seals! These guys spend most of their time diving and swimming in icy ocean waters (mainly the Arctic & Antarctic), looking for fish and crustaceans to eat. Did you know that they can stay underwater for almost 15 mins?!

🦭These charismatic creatures are sadly yet another species being affected by climate change. Many species of seal rely on ice for their lifecycle to enable them to feed their young. With less ice, it means the seals and their pups are separated prematurely leading to pup mortality. They are also hugely important animals in the marine food chain but sadly can be seen by humans (some fishermen), as a problem as they blame them for the decline in fish.

❗Whilst these amazing creatures are not at an endangered stage, we hope to continue to spread awareness of their value and how our actions once again, are contributing to their decline.

Did you know that wild tiger numbers have dropped by a shocking 95% since the beginning of the 20th century?

Today is International Tiger Day, and a time to reflect on what's caused this devastating decline. Illegal wildlife trade, human-wildlife conflict, habitat loss and fragmentation and climate change all play a part. The positive news, however, is that thanks to charities such as WWF, who work closely with governments and community groups across Asia, their numbers are finally on the increase.

This 'Wildlife Wednesday', we are looking at the humble hedgehog.

This much loved creature has been in harsh decline for the last 70 years. With our warming climate, it is thought that this has affected their hibernation patterns, meaning they wake at the wrong time of year, when often there is limited food. Similarly, with our growing human population, new roads and building developments have encroached on their homes. So, how can we help these prickly little hogs?

🦔Hedgehogs like dry spaces such as under garden sheds, hedges, compost heaps or even just an untidy and overgrown bit of your garden — so be careful when moving or clearing such spaces, especially during winter when they will be hibernating. You could be destroying their home.
🦔If you have water in your garden such as a pond, make sure there is an easy way for hedgehogs to climb out.
🦔Did you know that hedgehogs are lactose intolerant? Ignore the old wives tale and don’t leave out a saucer of milk for your prickly pals! Provide fresh, plain water instead.
🦔Hedgehogs will relish any meat-based wet dog or cat foods, or dry kitten food, as these are high in the protein that they need. Just remember, they will be getting most of their food from insects and worms in the wild. You can also purchase hedgehog specific food from your local garden centre, if in doubt! Don't forget to dispose of anything not eaten to avoid it going off.

There are so many ways that we can be helping our local wildlife. Let us know what you are doing!

Whilst this weather we’re having is absolutely glorious, it is too hot for many of us. So, imagine you’re an animal wearing a thick, furry coat!

The summer months can be very uncomfortable - and even dangerous - for our pets and also the wildlife around us. Whilst we can all do the simple yet crucial things for our pets such as providing shade and cool water, and not walking dogs in the heat of the day or leaving pets in hot cars, conservatories or caravans, for some wildlife, accessibility to what we may consider the basics, can prove tough. So as well as sharing our top-tips on how to keep your pets safe in the heat, we’re also going to explore what you can do to help the wildlife living around you to get through this rather warm heatwave we are having!

Plastic Free July is an amazing movement that helps millions of people all over the world to find ways to refuse single-use plastics, so we can become part of the solution to plastic pollution. We've talked so much about the significant risks to marine life due to the amount of plastic that ends up in our oceans, but the truth is, plastic pollution affects so many of the species we share our planet with, and we need to protect them.

What will you do to make a difference? We've started the list off below, can you add to it?

13/07/2022

It's the hottest wildlife Wednesday we have had to date! Our feathered friend is one who loves the heat however. Meet the Ostrich!

🪶Reaching heights of 9ft tall, these birds are the world's largest. They roam the African Savanna Desert, miraculously getting most of the water they need, from plants.
🏃Whilst Ostriches may be birds, they can't fly. They make up for it in speed however, sprinting up to 43mph! Their powerful legs are not just used for running, but also for protection. Each foot has two toes and long sharp claws. One kick could kill a potential predator like a lion.

Contrary to popular belief, these guys don't 'bury their heads in the sand', but lower their heads to make them less visible to predators. Whilst the Ostrich isn't listed as endangered, humans are its biggest threat. Today, ostriches are farmed and hunted for feathers (used in fashion), skin, meat, eggs, and fat. Sadly, like many other animals, they are being pushed out of their homes, as human populations grow, as we expand our need for homes, we move into areas they once freely roamed and called home themselves, resulting in habitat loss.

🌿Ostriches are hugely valuable to our planet, as they forage for plants and berries, they help replenish new vegetation, eating bugs such as locust which can be extremely damaging. We can help these wonderful animals by educating ourselves on their story, which in turn promotes eco tourism, helping those at the forefront to protect these animals for us.

So true! If we really listened to what animals were telling us, wouldn't the world be a better place?

It's Wildlife Wednesday and we are looking at the 'Brown Bear'.

These magnificent creatures have done a lot to capture the imagination of humans with their unique ability to stand on their hind legs, pick up objects with their 'fingers' and even often can be partial to the same food humans eat!

🐻 Sadly, the biggest threat to the population of these animals is, human's themselves. Whilst these animals are not endangered, yet! Awareness around their potential threats can help this ever being a real prospect.

🤓Whilst there are other threats to this species, humans are the biggest issue. Human expansion into the bears’ natural habitat in the form of mining and road construction for example, has meant that these bears are unfairly viewed as 'nuisances' by some humans, as where bears homes are being encroached, it means they then have access to livestock, crops and even our bins for example!
This human bear conflict has caused further issues such as hunting.

🌏But! These bears are integral to our ecosystems (and this world is ours to share!), making them a high priority on the conservation list. They are strong predators keeping other animal populations in check, they act as seed dispersers, helping to sustain their own environment and, given their dependence on large natural areas, brown bears are important in the management of other wildlife species. We need to be aware of the damage human practices are not just causing one species but the other species they co-exist with. We need to help maintain their habitat which spans across North America, Europe, and Asia.

Did you know that 8 million metric tonnes of plastic gets dumped into our oceans each year? That's the weight equivalent of nearly 57,000 blue whales. And that's just plastic; there's so much more rubbish and debris that ends up in the ocean and washed up on our beaches, having a devastating impact on the many marine species that live around our coastlines.

This , what can you do to help tackle the problem? Whether it's joining an organised beach clean, simply picking up some rubbish as you walk on the beach, or making sure you take every last little bit of your own rubbish away with you, we can all do our bit.

Did you know this week is Rabbit Awareness Week? 🐰

Rabbits make wonderful pets, but they have special needs that must be met to ensure they have the happiest lives possible. Rabbit Awareness Week takes a different theme each year and aims to shine a spotlight on a particular welfare need 🔦 This year's focus is on environment, and 'Room for Rabbits'.

Research from veterinary charity, PDSA, shows that 19% of rabbits in the UK are living in accommodation that's too small and with little or no run space. Now picture rabbits in the wild, with huge amounts of space to run, jump and explore! Our domestic rabbits need just the same freedom and opportunities to express natural behaviour.

So for all the bunny owners out there, how do you ensure you keep your rabbits 'hoppy' and healthy? There's some fantastic advice online from Rabbit Awareness Week so if you'd like some top tips, check out their website: https://rabbitawarenessactiongroup.co.uk/rabbit-welfare/environment/

This Wildlife Wednesday we are looking at, The Alpaca! And this friendly guy looks like we may be feeling on hump day!

Alpacas are the domesticated version of vicuñas, the wild South American ruminants found living high up in the Andes mountains. They are herd animals so like to be sociable and are most unhappy when alone. When their own kind aren’t around they like to live with llamas, goats and sheep. They are the smallest members of the camel family, on average 3 feet high at the shoulder and 4-7 feet long.

Fun facts!
🦷 Alpacas don’t have teeth in the top-front of their mouths, which is why they sometimes look a bit goofy.
🦙 Members of an alpaca herd will all use the same 'toilet area' rather than pooping randomly. This helps prevent diseases from spreading.
😤 If an Alpaca feels distressed, it has been known to spit at the threat!
🧶 Alpaca fur is incredibly soft and does not retain water. In fact, it’s the second strongest animal fibre after mohair so is often used to make garments such as a scarf.

These fluffy and funny creatures are often kept as pets and thankfully are not endangered. Their coat is actually considered a sustainable material, and is often recommended over wool and cashmere as its better for the environment. It can also be produced cruelty free, so these guys are doing a great job!

Since 1900, the UK has lost 33% of its sand dune habitats. They play a vital role in coastal protection as well as being home to many rare species. Help us celebrate and restore these threatened habitats this

To celebrate, we're shining a spotlight on a sand dune species! Meet the Eurasian Skylark...

Known for its beautiful song, the Eurasian skylark will fly up to 100m and then perform a slow, parachute-like spiral descent whilst singing.

Skylarks spend a lot of time on the ground, where they feed and even build their nests. As ground-nesting birds, they look for areas with short vegetation so that they can spot predators easily.

This means that they can often be seen singing low in the skies over sand dunes, as a healthy dune grassland makes a great coastal habitat for them. Cutting back some areas of scrub or removing trees that shouldn’t be found on dunes can help create more habitat for skylarks.

Wildlife Wednesday is back this week with The Bluefin Tuna

🐟 The biggest of the tuna fish, these guys can live to be up to 40 years of age!
💨 Made for speed, they have bodies like torpedoes, retractable fins and eyes set flush to their bodies. They can dive deeper than 3,000 feet and migrate all over the ocean. Pretty impressive for a fish!

Did you know?
- There are 3 species of Bluefin Tuna; Atlantic, Pacific and Southern with the Atlantic in the most danger.
- As a large part of the human diet, most of these fish are taken from the Mediterranean Sea. Known as a delicacy and used in dishes such as sushi and sashimi in Asia, these fish have been known to sell for over $1.75million per fish! Due to their value, fishermen use refined techniques for their capture, lowering their numbers substantially as a result.

🌊 These fish are hugely important to the oceans, as not only as a source of income for fishermen, but more importantly, they are a top predator, meaning they help maintain the balance of the ocean environment within the food chain. As a human population, reducing our consumption of these fish is key to lowering demand, helping populations recover.

08/06/2022

This Wildlife Wednesday, we are diving deep into our oceans to celebrate, World Oceans Day!

Why are our oceans so important?

🌏 Well, the ocean covers 70% of earth; with every breath of air we take and drop of water we drink, we are connected to the ocean and without the ocean, there would be no us!
🌊 Sadly, our oceans are under major threat. Majority of plastic is made using fossil fuels, which means it is a big contributor to greenhouse gas emissions (including carbon dioxide), which is a huge factor in climate change. With plastic production increasing substantially over recent years, not only has plastic pollution increased 10 fold meaning more is ending up in our oceans, harming our wildlife, but it has also meant our oceans are absorbing far more carbon dioxide. This has led to the water becoming more acidic & warm, harming the life below the blue surface.
❗Currently, 1 in 6 species face extinction by the end of the century if we fail to stop the climate crisis.

✅ So, what can we do to help? There's plenty!
1/ Conserve water - less wastewater will run into our oceans
2/ Litter pick - more plastic properly disposed of means less in our oceans
3/ Recycle - reuse where we can!
4 Reduce plastic consumption - Less used, less made!
5/ Eat responsibly - Keep more wildlife alive

REMEMBER: Together, we can save our oceans
