One of the most powerful pictures I’ve taken. Here is a very brief background:
This is a picture of Dr. Charlotte Williams, holding back tears while telling the story of her great grandparents, Joseph and Mattie Mayes, at the Black History Month event in Saskatoon. In 1910, Joseph and Mattie Mayes helped establish Saskatchewan’s first black pioneer settlement in Eldon and worked tirelessly to ensure their family live free and prosper. Indeed, Dr. Williams, a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, grew up to be the province’s first black veterinarian and the first black president of the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association (SVMA).
