The forest knew who you were before you ever set foot inside. The mycelium is older than Mesopotamia, older than anything related to humans, older than bones. The atoms in the skin cells you’re shedding in the forest that you’ve traveled a thousand miles to get to are being consumed there again for the first time in several millennia, and the wee little bug that ate a few just crawled into a spider web that was spun in a pattern older than dinosaurs.
The ocean knew who you were before you ever saw it. Every time you’ve touched water you’ve left a piece of yourself that made its way back to the ocean. The DNA of every living thing is in some part of the ocean. The vitality of some human civilizations came directly from the ocean and whatever came out of it, but hundreds of years later humans still understand more about space than the ocean. The abyss is an enthralling mystery, and it is no coincidence that humans feel most at home where the forest meets the ocean.
