Anne Boleyn

Many of us will have learnt of Anne Boleyn sometime before the age of 12. We probably knew her as Henry VIII’s second wife. A key part in the formation of the Church of England, Anne was the woman who Henry hoped would give him his much longed for son.

Anne is now strongly cited as a feminist icon. She didn’t conform to the expectations of women of the time. She didn’t believe that women’s beauty should be defined by men, appearing in the Tudor court without the layers of makeup that was custom for women at the time.
As a child Ann devoured books and became familiar with feminist ideas such as the argument that women shouldn’t be excluded from government, universities or from owning property. This led to her strong mind and confidence in speaking out (a personality trait that did not bode well for her during her time as Queen)
She was also a strong supporter of the Protestant church and believed that all people including ‘commoners’ should have access to the bible #. This attitude was seen as highly controversial and her attitude about religious reformation led to accusations of her being a witch.
Before they married there are example of numerous attempts by Henry to make her his mistress and she refused and was angry at the double standards regarding men and women in relation to adultery.
When they eventually did marry and Anne still hadn’t given birth to a son, Henry used her infidelity against her (despite having mistress of his own), He paired this information with an accusation of a plot to kill him and this sealed her fate. She was beheaded on 19th May 1535.

To this day there are numerous reports of Anne Boleyn’s ghost. One example is at Blickling Hall, which stands over her birthplace. People have reported seeing a coach arrive at the house, with Anne carrying her severed head in her lap. Once the coach arrives at the gates it disappears into thin air.
The Tower of London has received numerous sitings of Anne, the most famous being in 1864 when a guard actually charged towards her with his bayonet on for it to pass through her!

Whether they’ve been pioneers for women’s rights, broken gender stereotypes by becoming experts in a male dominated field or sparked just the smallest bit of curiosity for a young girl to form her identity. May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them. Happy International Women’s Day!

Mama Lola is the pseudonym for Alourdes, Vodou Priestess.
The book, Mama Lola: A Vodou Priestess in Brooklyn based on Alourdes and her family played a huge part in dispelling the incorrect negative representation of the Vodou religion.
Born in Haiti in the 1930’s, Alourdes first fell pregnant at 14 and after having her second child and leaving a tumultuous relationship she ended up turning to s*x work to make ends meet.
By 1962 she made the difficult decision to leave Haiti for Brooklyn, USA in search of a more prosperous life for her (now three) children.
Alourdes received word from her family in Haiti that her sister-in-law dreamt she should return to Haiti. When she arrived, her mother had been possessed by the spirit ‘Ogou’. The spirit revealed that Alourdes was to be a manbo (priestess). Her mother was also a manbo and they used their time together to help train Alourdes and strengthen her connection with the spirit world. It took a few trips back and forth to Haiti for Alourdes to be initiated into priesthood but she eventually got there and her embracing of Vodou led to the end of her life as a s*x worker.
Alourdes has been pivotal in correctly informing people of the true essence Vodou. Demystifying and removing the negative association of Black Magic and evil abs promoting Vodou as a religion fuelled by a loyal force of love and spiritual healing.
Mama Lola is described in the book as combining the skills of a medical doctor, a psychotherapist, a social worker and a priest.

Lorraine Warren

Along with her husband Ed, Lorraine investigated over 10,000 paranormal cases throughout her career. Notable cases were The Enfield Poltergeist, The Amityville House and Annabelle the haunted doll.

Lorraine noticed she saw the world different to her peers when she was in school. During a class project, the children planted seeds and as soon as Lorraine’s was planted she experienced seeing the seed grow into a tree, swaying in the wind before her eyes. When her teacher asked her what she was looking at Lorraine explained.
‘Are you seeing the future?’ the teacher asked.
‘Yes, I guess I am’ replied Lorraine. She later described herself as a clairvoyant and light trance medium.

Despite her apparent gift, she was initially a skeptic regarding hauntings. It wasn’t until Lorraine began visiting apparent haunted locations and hearing numerous accounts from people across the country that she began to believe in ghosts. She was convinced by the similarities between the stories of people who had never met.

In 1952 Lorraine and Ed set up the New England Society for Psychic Research to document their cases. They also set up The Occult Museum at their home and to this day it is filled with tapes, documents and artefacts with links to the paranormal.

My Dad was working with his friend in an aircraft hanger attached to a prison in Yorkshire. The room was vast and empty and mainly just used as a large workshop for prison maintenance jobs.
From the back of the hangar my Dad and his colleague heard a lad’s voice shouting ‘Oi!’
The voice belonged to a young dark haired lad poking his head out of an adjoining room.
My dad shouted back ‘are you okay mate?’
After the guy didn’t respond my Dad made the long walk to the bottom of the hangar and checked the room the man had disappeared into but when he went in there was no one there. There was only one entrance and exit into the room. His colleague was in complete agreement with what he heard and saw.
When my Dad mentioned
it to another man who worked at the building he was want surprised.
Turns out there’d been a plane crash during the war and this hanger had been used as a place to store a young soldier’s body while they waited for room at the morgue.
The local women had even provided knitted clothes for this young man to wear as they didn’t want him to be cold whilst waiting to be buried.
My dad isn’t the type of guy who would entertain a story like this but all night he kept talking about the poor young lad who died so young. It really moved him. 🖤

“My family are from a little island off ireland. I remember being told this story a lot. Probably in the 1950s my great uncle was going to visit his sick uncle and he was riding his bike along the road. On the route he saw his uncle working in the field and he was confused as the message the family had received was that his uncle was basically on his deathbed. When he went to turn up the hill - within talking distance he couldn’t see his uncle any more. So he went up to the house, when he got there his uncle was in bed, dying. He died not long after that. The family story is that it was fetch. According to Irish folklore it’s an omen of when someone is close to death.” Sent in by Ellie, Wirral
