The Gulf of Maine is becoming increasingly warm and salty as ocean currents push warm water into the gulf from the Northwest Atlantic.
The Gulf of Maine is becoming increasingly warm and salty as ocean currents push warm water into the gulf from the Northwest Atlantic.
Because of this, phytoplankton — small, plant-like marine organisms that photosynthesize — in the Gulf of Maine are 65% less productive than they were two decades ago, according to a new NASA-funded study. Phytoplankton are at the base of the marine food web, and help provide food for many larger fishes and marine animals.

☀️+🌎+🌕 = a lunar eclipse!
☀️+🌎+🌕 = a lunar eclipse!
On May 15-16th, a full moon will illuminate the night sky, but people in much of Africa, Western Europe, Central and South America, and most of North America will have the opportunity to see the full moon darken during a lunar eclipse.
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align so that the Moon passes into Earth’s shadow.
In a total lunar eclipse, the entire Moon falls within the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, called the umbra. When the Moon is within the umbra, it will turn a reddish hue. Lunar eclipses are sometimes called “Blood Moons” because of this phenomenon.
