The following guest post comes from Paul Loeb, founder of music promotion service DropTrack.
Make sure your music doesn’t end up annoying the heck out of producers, DJs, and people responsible for emptying the SPAM folder.
1. Send Promos Not Facepalms:
When you send your promo make sure it is attractively packaged, even if that just means giving it a sensible filename… and not ‘davesamazinglycooltrack006.mp3’. Ideally, you’ll send it branded with your logo, and any marketing material you might have. Also, avoid spam traps and stop clogging up inboxes with MP3 attachments and sketchy Zippyshare or Mediafire links!
2. To Infinity And Beyond:
If your promo is lucky enough to stand out and be seen…and maybe even heard, then don’t waste this golden opportunity. Go above and beyond. You should enclose a press release, artwork and make sure the track is easily shareable.
3. The Postman Always Knocks Twice:
When you send your unsigned tracks to record label A&R contacts make sure you keep track of who you’ve sent to. Perseverance is essential but blindly sending the same track with the exact same message time and time again is bordering on harassment!
4. Radio GAGA:
There is more than one way to get your music heard. Get it out there and send it to radio!
5. Bloggers Unite:
Send bloggers your new music, along with album artwork, photos, and a press release… treat popular bloggers the same as you’d treat a superstar DJ. It’s all exposure… and bloggers share.
6. Last Night A DJ Saved My Life:
Don’t be shy, track down the biggest international DJs and make sure they can download your music in the high-quality WAV format they need for club sound systems.
7. Take One For The Team:
What do people really think of your music? Expose yourself to feedback… but don’t just agree with it. You are the artist!
8. He Said, She Said:
If you can, make notes of who is downloading your music, who is commenting, and build up a fan profile. You might be surprised by who is actually listening to you and where they hail from, which can help you make informed decisions when creating more art.
9. Fan-Tastic:
Immediately, unceasingly, and aggressively set out to build a mailing list of your fans. This will allow you to access your fans directly at will so you can send new and exclusive tracks to your most loyal followers and systematically build your brand, following, and fanbase.
10. Share And Share-A-Like:
Share your music anywhere you can. Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Reddit are just a few places you can share your music.
