Wishing Well Park Update:

We are thrilled to announce that as of June 2024, thanks to the generosity and support of many community members and businesses, we have broken ground on Phase I of this project.

With help from James River Nurseries, Shade & Wise Brick Co., and contractors specializing in both playground equipment installation and safety surfacing, we are now several weeks into the portion of our renovation which will totally rehabilitate the Park's surfacing, including by adding new drainage mitigation, new hardscaping, accessible walkways, and certified engineered wood fiber play surfacing.

This Phase also includes the installation of new play elements including a universal spinner, a labyrinth, outdoor musical instruments, a playhouse with slide and sail boat for ages 2-5, and a shade structure. We anticipate that as part of this Phase, we will also be able to install additional play elements such as a stage for creative play, sensory bins, and a mud kitchen.

We are so grateful to all of you for your support of this important community endeavor. Come celebrate and keep the momentum going on August 17th at Fine Creek Brewing Co.

As we celebrate our incredible progress to date and plan for the Park's future, we invite you to join us on the afternoon of August 17 on the beautiful grounds of Fine Creek Brewing Company. Tickets ($25/ adult and $10/ child) include a sampling of local and farm-to-table food, craft beer, and non-alcoholic drinks. The event will also feature games from Richmond Co****le, and a raffle. All proceeds will go toward funding Phase II of the Park's renovations: a 5-12 rope climbing structure, wheelchair swing, nature pathway, and plantings

Summer's here, and the fun's in full swing with camps, pool days, and backyard BBQs. But amid the excitement, some parents might worry about the "summer slide" – when speedy math facts slow down, the alphabet song misses a beat, and we lose the school year’s routine and structure. Fear not! Here's how to keep the education party rolling:

Math: Involve the kids in meal planning and baking.

Literacy: Create a family summer idea jar.

Social Studies: Become a field trip aficionado!

Science: Try out some experiments like making slime from butter or creating explosive reactions with baking soda.

Next time you hear the dreaded "I'm bored" or a plea for the iPad, grab one of these ideas to keep the learning journey alive and kicking! My summer bucket list jar is ready—is yours?

Enjoying coffee on our patio among bloom-filled container pots, we watch the birds, squirrels, and chipmunks, as we fondly recall the journey of nurturing our beloved yard on Leafield Drive, a labor of love spanning over two decades. From the moment we first stepped onto this property in the mid-'90s, we knew it was special. As we reminisce, laughter bubbles up, recalling the days when our four children, now grown and flown, added their youthful energy to the landscape, each leaving a distinct mark on its evolving canvas.

Over the years, our yard has been more than just a space; it's been a reflection of our family's story. With Monit Rosendale's (Gardens by Monit, LLC) assistance, we embarked on a journey to breathe new life into our aging landscape, blending professional expertise with a touch of nostalgia from Tom's Adirondack family vacation home. We can't help but smile as we recall replacing our leafdroppers with Leland Cypresses, and transplanting those majestic Canadian Hemlocks and pachysandra from Tom's mother's property, a tangible link to our cherished past, now flourishing in our Virginia soil.

Meet Luca, Stroll Salisbury & Rosemont's amazing athlete of the month!

"Hi. I’m Luca, and I love sports - especially baseball and martial arts. Baseball has been a big part of my life for about three years now. At nine years old, I love everything about it - from playing to collecting cards to watching the pros. My favorite positions are Left Field to catch pop fly balls, Shortstop to make quick plays, and Third Base because it’s the “hot corner.”

I just wrapped my season with the Huguenot Little League AAA Minors Tigers — we even ended up as regular season champs! Recently, I was offered a roster spot for RISE Baseball, and I’m excited to play with my new travel team.

I’m thankful for my family and little brother, Leo, cheering me on always. I’ll treasure each milestone in my sports journey and the friendships I make along the way. For those just beginning, it’s easy. “Just keep your eye on the ball and never give up.”"

David fondly recalls the summer of 2016 as the genesis of their home renovation journey, a journey that would breathe new life into a humble ranch-style abode nestled in the heart of Salisbury. From the moment they crossed the threshold, David and Kristen knew they had stumbled upon something special—a home brimming with untapped potential, waiting to be unleashed.

What captivated them initially? "The roof and those expansive windows," David reminisces with a smile. It was a love affair with architectural elements that spoke of grandeur and possibility. But beyond aesthetics, it was the allure of space—4600 square feet of endless possibilities—that sealed the deal.

Their mission was clear: a top-to-bottom overhaul that left no stone unturned. "Roof, windows, doors, lighting, garage door, landscaping, irrigation, and paint," David lists, each item a testament to their unwavering commitment to crafting a space that resonated with their vision. As they delved into the nitty-gritty of design, inspiration flowed freely. "Kristen picked everything, and I just went with it," David admits with a grin. From the lush greenery to the sleek modern touches, every element spoke volumes about their shared aesthetic sensibilities.

But amidst the hustle and bustle of renovations, one decision stood out: choosing Pella windows. "I grew up with Pella windows," David explains, recalling fond memories of his childhood farm home in Roanoke. Amidst comparisons with other brands, Pella's reputation for quality and durability won them over. "The windows are almost maintenance-free; cleaning is a breeze," he adds, a testament to their practicality and ease of use.

On June 27th, our Stroll Salisbury & Rosemont residents were treated to a delicious buffet of Northern Indian Cuisine, which owner Shyam Sharma hails from. We had appetizers of Chilli Chicken and Vegetable Pakora. We sampled various main course dishes such as Tandoori Chicken, Butter Chicken, Lamb Korma, Paneer Tikka Masala, Corn Palak, and Choley, accompanied by Naan and Rice. To wrap it all up, desserts of Gulab Jamun and Rasgulah were served.

The hospitality owner Shyam Sharma and his staff showed us was top-notch!

"The only thing better than the food was the service. They treated us (and our kids) like royalty and shared many foods that weren't on the buffet. Thank you! - Salisbury resident Brandon Hill

The residents overwhelmingly give this restaurant two thumbs up. If you want to give it a try you will find them in the Village Market Place, 13126 Midlothian Turnpike. www.sahebindianbistro.com

24/06/2024

Mindfulness, once confined to yoga studios, is now permeating education and home environments. Defined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children as "paying attention to feelings and experiencing them in the present moment," mindfulness aids in emotional processing for both children and adults.

Preschools and elementary schools are integrating these practices into daily routines, with activities like "Mindful Monday" sessions and yoga breaks fostering calmness and self-awareness. For instance, during circle time, students may participate in a brief mindfulness exercise to center themselves before starting the day.

Parents can extend these practices at home, drawing from activities like "fire-breathing meditation" and "animal yoga," which promote breathing awareness and body balance. Fire-Breathing Meditation involves inviting children to sit with their eyes closed, inhaling slowly to imagine warm air filling their lungs like a soft breeze, and exhaling slowly as though they are releasing a spark into the air. With each inhalation, children breathe in warm air, transforming the tiny spark into fire, picturing the glowing fire in their minds. After several cycles, they switch to breathing in cool air, exhaling a cloud hovering over the fire, imagining rain slowly extinguishing it, accompanied by a "sss" sound to hear the sizzle of the fire burning out. Animal Yoga combines slow, intentional breathing with poses like the cobra, downward dog, tree, and child poses, promoting body awareness, balance, and muscle strength. (Activities sourced from Monica Wiedel-Lubinski's article Nature-Based Mindfulness for More Calm & Peaceful Kids: NAEYC Blog entry 2/6/2019).

Salisbury Garden Club manages several civic beautification projects in Midlothian, and you don’t have to look too far to find one. The Midlothian Post Office, Midlothian Fire Station, Wishing Well Park, holiday decorations for the Salisbury entrances, Lifelong Learning Institute, flower arranging for Bickford Senior Living Center, Community Hospice House, graduation flowers - to name only a few- are recipients of the time and talent Salisbury Garden Club members have to offer. Meals on Wheels has received flowers for their clients twice a year for the last eight years.

Meals on Wheels is a service available to home-bound seniors age sixty and older who are unable to prepare a nutritious mid-day meal and with no one available or willing to prepare the meal for them. The cost of the meal service is based on a sliding scale, so no one is turned away due to the inability to pay. Volunteers pick up the individually wrapped meals at Central Baptist Church off Courthouse Road and deliver them between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm. This service offers recipients an important safety check as well, as drivers speak with their clients.

Several Salisbury Garden Club members volunteer for this worthwhile program and the Club provides small bouquets twice a year for each meal recipient. In December, SGC volunteers made 138 individual bouquets to accompany the meals.

Please visit SGC’s website: www.salisburygardenclub.com for more information on Salisbury Garden Club and their activities. Meetings are held at Manakin Episcopal Church, 985 Huguenot Trail, Midlothian, VA 23113, on the third Wednesday morning of each month from September through May. Visitors are always welcome!
