The Leaders is a band comprised of luminaries of Chicago jazz scene, associated with #AACM, that includes Artur Blythe, Chico Freeman, Lester Bowie, Cecil McBee, Dony Moye, Kirk Lighthsey (the did several albums, somep ersonnel changes occurred but that is the line-up on "Out Here Like This..." releasde in 1988). Just a great session, somewhere on the verge of mainstream post-bop and free-jazz. Black Saint has been largely responsible for documentation of US avant-garde jazz scene in late 70s and 80s. Ep 49 Ebo Taylor, Pat Thomas and Uhuru Yenzu - Uhuru Special Two absolute Giants of African music, Pat Thomas and Ebo Taylor, both from Ghana, in one of their several collaborations released on Essiebons label. Uhuru Special is insanely danceable, yet relaxed track, with pleny of horn solos, call-and-response chants and just infectious and joyful groove. Obviously an OG pressing of this, in decent shape, would be downright impossible to track (and afford) so all the thanks to Mr Bongo @mrbongoworldwide for doing a marvellous job with this reissue. A Song A Day to keep the doctor away. Ep 46 Hailu Mergia and the Walias Band - Tezeta There's something so exceptionally soothing and hypnotic about music of Hailu Mergia. You can listen to this track, and the entire album, on repeat. Just pure bliss. Exotic chillout. And Mergia's story is also fascinating. Succesfull musician in the 70s in his own country. He has emigrated to US in the 80s, worked as cab driver, while recoring some music lo-fi at home. Thankfully he was rediscovered, along with many other Ethiopian musicians. Tezeta album was originally released only on cassette in 1976, thanks to the label Awesome Tapes From Africa, it is finally available to general public. Ep 45 The Originals - Don't Stop Now The Originals, weren't actually that original, sort of 2nd or maybe even 3rd tier of Motown acts, they occasionally didbackup for other singers, and had a minor hit or two. That being said almost anything on Motown at the time had some goodsongs and solid production value, even if there were not nr 1 hits. The Portrait Of Originals - not a compilation by any means, which makes this a very misleading title - had only one song released as a single which was "Bells" produced by Marvin Gaye. Ep 44 Andraé Crouch and The Disciples - You Gave To Me Crouch is considered to be the father of modern gospel music, freely incorporating into his songs elements of jazz, soul and funk (just listen to this downright nasty p-funk bridge!). If you go check the full track a sax solo by one #MichaelBrecker follows. Not bad, huh? This Is Another Day is a great gospel record, as virtually anything by the group. Thanks to the popularity they achieved you can find this frequently in a nice price department. Rufus on stage must have been a dynamite, not a greatest soul singer by any means, but he had charisma, humour and could definitely entertain the crowd. In fact first half of the side on this LP is is a stand-up comedy routine. In another song Rufus has the crowd doing "quacks" and "oinks" - that maybe is not sophisticated art, but sure is damn funny. And once they get rolling, these are tight performances. Just non-stop groove, punchy horns, bluesy guitar lines and a lot of funkiness to enjoy and dance to. STAX Records does not disappoint. A clip and some pics to follow for your pleasure. A Song A Day to keep the doctor away. Ep 41 Charles Lloyd Quartet - Forest Flower (Sunrise) I am very excited about the upcoming #Jazztopadfestival that's about to start tomorrow in Wroclaw. I decided to celebrate the occasion with Charles Lloyd's record - who has performed in past editionsof the festival several times. One of those he graciously signed some of my records (yes, that black marker on the cover is not somedoodling, that is Lloyd's actual autograph). Charles Lloyd Quartet of the 70s was a monster of a band, including absolute giants of jazz - Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee and JackDeJohnette. This was wildly influential group, and they had a way to stay relevant with the hip crowd while taking festival stages (including Soviet Union!) by storm thanks too their dynamic performances and some very flower-power imagery on their albums. Forest Flower is absolutely beautiful album, one of best live jazz records of all time I believe and I recall to have read it was a significant bestseller at the time. I don't usually keep doubles in the collection but this alternative cover on Czechoslovakian Supraphon label is definitely a keeper. As for the US release, one of the previous owners annotated the inner sleeve in french, commenting the tracks - love such personal details showing the history of the LP. Objects have memory. She started with Clara Ward Singers, then left to form #TheStarsOfFaith, but was destined for solo career. Her incredible range and passionate style singing influenced many singers in and outside the genre.. Aside from traditional and contemporary gospel songs, she is not afraid to mix it up and add gospel feel to songs by Bob Dylan, George Harrison and others. The track of the day is Danger Zone" (penned by #PercyMayfield) from "Standing Here Wondering Which Way To Go" (1971). Just check the drums and bass on this one! General Note : the personnel involved in this record is crazy. Produced by #JoelDorn and #RobertaFlack. The backup singers are #TheDixieHummingbirds. #PaulGriffin on organ and #JerryJemmot on bass, most known for their usually uncredited work for #MotownRecords. Andrew White alternates on bass, whom I don't know well, but his resume includes records with McCoy Tyner, The 5th Dimension and Weather Report. Trubadurzy - Po Co Ja Za Tobą Biegam (What For Am I Chasing After You) The Troubadours were one of the polish premiere big beat groups and their music very convincingly incorporated some folk music elements and songs into rock / rhythm'n'blues. Definitely showed charisma and showmanship, down to their stylish stage uniforms as they frequently dressed as Musketeers. I offer you a great mod tune from their second album, and I definitely recommend their first 5 records.. They have disbanded after that as their lead singer Krzysztof Krawczyk embarked on a solo career and did only a couple of reunions. A clip, and some pics later in the day for your pleasure.
