During this difficult and challenging time, you may need to adjust your horse’s management.

Although turning horses out 24/7 may be a consideration, it is important that changes are made gradually to ensure the health of your horse is not compromised.

There are also certain situations where this isn’t possible or suitable such as not having appropriate yard facilities, a suitable environment or your horse needs specialist care and careful management - for example, those with equine metabolic syndrome, prone to laminitis or are overweight/obese.

Self-isolation: have you made plans for your horses and dogs?
RSPCA advice to make sure your animals are cared for
The RSPCA is encouraging horse owners to think about how they will care for their animals in the event they need to self-isolate.

The animal charity is suggesting horse owners speak to friends with horses about buddying up to help each other in the event of illness or self-isolation.

Dr Mark Kennedy, equine specialist at the RSPCA said: “We know the horse community is amazingly supportive and that owners often pitch in to help each other out.

“It’s probably a good idea for horse owners to have a chat with their horseowning friends and put plans in place to cope if someone falls ill or needs to self-isolate.

“If someone is unwell or asked to self-isolate the last thing they need is the stress of worrying about who is going to look after their horses, so a quick chat with friends now could reduce that worry.”

While there’s no current evidence to suggest that animals can be carriers of Covid-19 or can become ill from it themselves, your horse and other pets may be impacted if you or any members of your family test positive for the virus or are asked to stay at home and self-isolate.

Tips to keep your horses happy and healthy:
● If you haven’t tested positive or been asked to self-isolate then continue to interact with your horses as normal, but good advice at any time, not specific to the Coronavirus situation, is to adopt good hygiene practices including washing hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after touching them and any shared yard items such as wheelbarrows, brooms and forks. Avoid being licked by your horse.
● Ensure you have sufficient supplies of feed and any medication needed.
● Although you won’t be able to take your horse beyond your land if you’re self-isolating, aim to ensure your horse is kept happy with sufficient exercise and stimulation, if possible increasing turnout, amending feeding accordingly and try providing any existing stable toys to keep his mind occupied as much as possible.
● Speak to your vet or doctor for more advice.

Extra tips for dogs:
● Although you won’t be able to take your dog beyond your house or garden for exercise if you’re self-isolating, there are lots of ways to keep your dog happy and healthy within the confines of your own home.
● Mental stimulation is a great way to keep your dog entertained and occupied so you can keep your dog happy by replacing exercise with other activities until you are able to take them back out for their usual walks.
● Try challenging your pooch at tea time - ditch the food bowl and feed Fido using a Kong or a food puzzle to get them thinking.
● Play, play, play! Most dogs love to play so set aside some time to have a good game of fetch or tug with your pooch.
● Learning a new trick or command is great mental stimulation for a dog. Get out their favourite treats and try teaching Fido how to wave his paw, ‘sit’, ‘lie down’, or ‘roll-over’.
● Get him sniffing - scent work can be a great way to keep them busy for ages! Hide treats around the garden or around the house and send them off in search of them. If you feed your dog kibble this can be a great way to serve them their meals!
● Remember toilet breaks - remember your dog will still need to go outside to use the toilet so make sure they get regular access to the garden to potter, sniff and wee.
● Spotify has recently launched ‘My Dog’s Favourite Podcast’ which has a range of carefully selected spoken word, sound and original music designed to encourage relaxation.

If you have been diagnosed with Covid-19
● Inform your local health protection team that there is a pet in the household. They will liaise with the relevant animal health authorities.
● Current advice is to restrict contact with pets as much as possible as a precautionary animal health measure.
● If you do need to interact with your pet, wash your hands before and after any interaction with them and wear a face mask if possible.
● If your pet shows signs of ill health, please do not take them to the vet. Contact your local health protection team for advice.
● Remember these are precautionary measures and there is currently no evidence that pets can spread coronavirus or become unwell.

General Note: There are many different types of coronavirus and some can cause disease in different species of animals. These are NOT the same as Covid 19 and do not spread to, or cause disease in people. These different coronaviruses can cause disease in the specific species they infect, usually this manifests gastrointestinal signs which can be managed with supportive treatment. There is no risk to humans or other species.

Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1) outbreak has been confirmed at an equestrian centre in Hampshire.

As the disease can spread easily and has the potential for serious consequences, the BHS strongly recommends that yards inform others if they have an outbreak so potential in-contact horses can be quickly isolated and monitored to help decrease the risk of spread.

If you have any concerns for your horse contact your vet immediately.

EHV-1 is contagious and can cause respiratory disease, abortion and neurological disease. The virus can be spread by direct and indirect contact such as:
• Horse to horse contact
• Nasal discharge
• Contaminated equipment or by handlers who have been in contact with infected horses
• Via aerosol droplets over short distances by coughing and snorting

Clinical signs for the respiratory disease will be similar to equine flu and include a high temperature, nasal discharge, coughing, loss of appetite and lethargy. Horses affected by the neurological disease may not able to pass urine or droppings, can display signs of poor limb coordination, and in severe cases are unable to stand. Pregnant mares can suddenly and unexpectantly miscarry their unborn foal.

Further EHV advice and the simple steps you can take to prevent disease spread is available from: https://www.bhs.org.uk/advice-and-information/horse-health-and-sickness/disease-prevention

World Class Equestrian Stars Head to the
TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show
Excitement is building as world class equestrian stars are confirmed in the line-up for The TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show at the M&S Bank Arena – December 28 to 31.
From the very best showjumping in the TheraPlate UK Grand Prix and Hope Valley Saddlery Puissance, to star performances by Carl Hester in this year’s Equitop GLME Freestyle Dressage to Music, as well as the all new John Oates Horseboxes Eventing Grand Prix, 2019 looks set to be a truly memorable event.
The Whitaker dynasty will be out in force with showjumping legends John and Michael thrilling spectators, joined by son’s Robert and Jack, and niece Ellen. Other leading GB riders include Holly Smith, Guy Williams, William Funnell, Louise Saywell, Matthew Sampson and Georgia Tame.
Showjumper Shane Breen will be flying the flag for Ireland, along with Daniel Coyle and Billy Twomey, a two time Liverpool Champion, Anthony Condon, Richard Howley and Mikey Pender.
Polish rider Andrzej Oplatek is also heading to the M&S Bank Arena after major success in Salzburg with his main contenders Stakkatan and Conthinder. Other top showjumpers from overseas travelling to the show include Sweden’s Angelie Von Essen, Andy Kocher from the USA and Australian rider Rowan Willis.
As well as the legendary Carl Hester competing in the The Equitop GLME Freestyle, leading names Emma Hindle, Louise Bell, Henriette Anderson, Ulrik Moelgaard and Sarah Higgins will showcase Dressage to Music at both Grand Prix and Inter 1 level for the first time.
Former 5 star winning event rider, Ruth Edge, will also be joining the dressage line-up for the first time. Ruth hung up her eventing boots in 2016, and has since established herself as one of the country’s leading dressage riders, already having won multiple National titles, and scoring top results at Grand Prix level.
The John Oates Horseboxes Eventing Grand Prix final is set to attract major names including Gemma Tattersall, a winner at the Equerry Bolesworth International Horse Show in June, Nicky Hill who galloped to success at the Equitop Bolesworth Young Horse Championship qualifier in August, and World and British Number 1 event rider, Oliver Townend, well known for his speed against the clock.

Irishman Cathal Daniels took the honours at Stuttgart’s indoor eventing competition just beating fellow countryman, Padraig McCarthy – with both heading to Liverpool to take up the challenge while the in-form Laura Collett - a big winner at Boekelo in October will be hoping her great run continues.
Emily King, Janette Brakewell, Polly Stockton, Izzy Taylor and Paul Tapner will also be battling it out for a place on the winner’s podium in this exciting final.
The four evening and two afternoon performances at the M&S Bank Arena are set to bring spectators another equestrian extravaganza building up to a New Year’s Eve celebration like no other.
With great family entertainment including the Shetland Pony Grand National, brilliant musical acts, high octane entertainment and world class equestrian sport there’s something for everyone.
