In 2009, Swedish Earth Science professor Johan Rockström led 27 leading academics in the design of the 9 Planetary Boundaries. More recently he collaborated on the EAT-Lancet commission to design the flexitarian “planetary health diet” and was featured alongside Sir David Attenborough in the Netflix documentary, Breaking Boundaries: The Science of Our Planet.

https://www.netflix.com/ca/title/81336476

At this year’s COP28 summit he was prompted by Plant Based Treaty representative Steven George to describe the magnitude of food solutions to the climate crisis. Rockström responded that though they are in Dubai to intensify scrutiny of the oil industry “the food system transition is equally important.”

Why would he throw back 30 years to George H. W. Bush’s address at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil? While the POTUS was rejecting limitations of economic growth it is easy to observe that America’s greatest export is APPETITE — whether for oil, infrastructure development, entertainment, fast food franchises, and certainly the famous Standard American Diet (SAD).

Despite the Clinton administration hailing the 1997 Kyoto Accord as “economically sound,” George Bush “the younger” denounced America’s involvement in emissions mitigation as a “mistake.” When it comes to “the other COP” seeking to halt global biodiversity losses, the only holdouts after 30 years are the USA and the Vatican, citing appetites for growth and fear of wealth distribution.

You can see why getting Barack Obama’s signature (well, John Kerry’s) on the 2015 Paris Accord was such a big deal.

The expands upon the Paris Agreement to halt the widespread degradation of critical ecosystems caused by animal agriculture and to promote a shift to healthier, sustainable plant-based diets.

Vegans are passionate, but does that passion make them irrational, sentimental, out of touch with the state of the world, and too idealist to know where humanity is going?

Last week, “This House Would Go Vegan” was the theme of a debate at the Oxford Union, an institution celebrating the bicentennial of when it was formed by students to challenge the knowledge and ideologies of their professors. The students who witnessed the debate thereafter voted in favor of the motion, swayed by the urgent need for environmental recovery from animal agriculture, nutritional reform by eliminating animal-derived products, and ethical alignment of social habits with values of nonviolence and the elimination of unnecessary suffering.

Dr. Sailesh Rao, an Internet systems innovator who has turned to engineering solutions to the climate crisis, represented the environmental motives for “the house” (the Union, its students, and any household) to go vegan. Inspired by his granddaughter Kimaya, Dr. Rao’s organization, Climate Healers, collaborates with Tami Hay of Million Vegan Grandmothers in a multi-generational effort to shape the most thriveable future.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YI4qtNyxxg

In a post-debate interview, Dr. Rao pondered how the supporters of the motion had coordinated their responses according to their expertise; Lifestyle and wellness physician Dr Chidi Ngwaba made arguments for health and the vegan outreach activist known as Joey Carbstrong engaged the ethical aspects.

The debate partners against the motion, Dr. David Rose, Lincoln college student Manon Hammond, Union President-Elect Hannah Edwards, and controversial media figure Katie Hawkins, rather than building upon facts and figures, appealed directly to the emotional wellbeing, status, and appetite of the audience in attendance.

Despite prevailing attitudes, it appears that vegans EVOKE emotional turbulence more than they experience it, and it is the resistance to a logical progression towards a more sustainable, healthy, and compassionate lifestyle that forces a retreat into comforts, convenience, and indulgent privileges.

Oxford University Student Union will release the video in early 2024 to coincide with , the month-long campaign which has since 2014 challenged 2.8 million people to be vegan for the month of January.

VegCerpts will be sure to extract more nuggets of wisdom when the debate is published.

Fossil fuel interests are not the only infiltrators of the summit in Dubai.

“Vegan cities will cause massive malnutrition.” These words from the Q&A following the event entitled “Vegan Cities, Support for Small Farmers, and Plant Based Treaty to Fight Climate Change.”

Despite the 48,000 planetary saviors attending the climate summit leaving many of the seats empty, a nutritional biochemist from the European Federation of Animal Science made his way to hear six panelists applaud the cities who have signed the Based Treaty and plan a transition path for farmers to thrive in a plant-based economy.

Though a nutritionist for animals bred for slaughter, Michael Lee felt it appropriate to lecture the mostly female panel of vegans about the naïve dietary choices of young women in the UK.

He lamented the dietary replacement of animal tallow with global deforestation due to palm oil, to share a sample perspective of “environmentalism” through the of his employer.

The depth of nutritional knowledge for humans at the EFAS does appears not to extend to plant-based sources of iron, selenium, or iodine, or supplementation of vitamins D and B12.

When the veterinary scientist concluded his 3 minute lecture, Climate Save Movement co-director Nilgün Engin directed him to a 2018 study which measured only 18% of global calories from the flesh and byproducts of animals, and little more than a third of the global protein supply. https://ourworldindata.org/land-use

Have you signed the Plant-Based Treaty?

Watch the rest of this video at http://www.plantbasedtreaty.org and add your name to this landmark companion to the Paris Accord on Climate Change.

The vegan movement is certainly divided in strategy and tactic, but when we ask if we need top down political change or a groundswell of grassroots commitment to change, the answer is obvious -- BOTH!

Especially environmentally-minded can glean from our peers in the movement that have expected our leaders to deliver the policies we need just because they're the RIGHT THING TO DO -- well, they've been holding their breath for a long, frustrating time.

There's no stopping an idea whose time has come, and when we're running at a brick wall we know that the time is coming up fast!

For all of the infuriating consistency of economics trumping environment in political circles, it's important to acknowledge the wins when they come.

Remember the hole in the that dominated headlines in the 1980s? We fixed it. Politicians fixed it. IKR?

A decade before the Kyoto Accord and 18 years before the Paris Accord, representatives of every country met to sign the Montreal Accord, which acted on solid scientific evidence that hydrochlorofluorocarbons were eroding the Earth's protective ozone layer.

HCFCs were used to refrigerate food, air condition buildings and tease our '80s hairdos towards the ceiling.

"BigFreon" having much less monied lobby than BigOil or BigMeat, all HCFCs were phased out in favor of HFCs as refrigerants.

Tarnishing the victory somewhat -- hydrofluorocarbons, while better for the ozone, turned out to be 10,000 times worse a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Doh! 🫣

In 2016 the same countries got together AGAIN, this time in Rwanda, and signed the Kigali Accord to phase out HCFCs for new innovations in refrigerants, including...sea water. (!!) 🌊

Keeping it real, our society is not particular to what fluids keep our vittles chilled.

The climate change community has hoped for decades that the public also won't mind if the electricity powering our refrigerators is generated by wind and solar rather than oil, coal, and gas.

It is not hard to observe that the CONTENTS of our fridge determines the greatest portion of our carbon footprint, but unlike freon or crude oil, greening up our food choices is a contentious cultural challenge.

The not only represents a rational transition from the worst agricultural production but encourages a shift towards responsible food culture.

VegCerpts - COP28 Burning & Killing Machines

The choice of Sultan Al Jaber as President of the COP28 climate summit was a controversial choice that was hotly contested by many in the climate change community, including Al Gore, who identifies his oil company as one of the least responsible in the world. The summit had yet to commence when in an online interview the Sultan challenged the objective of completely phasing out the fossil fuel industry, an act that can’t sustain socioeconomic development and regress our civilization to cave dwelling.

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZGEY2xc220

It is understandable that those who would see the rapid and complete replacement of fossil fuels (which we might dub the “burning machine”) felt that the disguise of the oil cartel had slipped. We agree that as hosts of the COP summit the United Arab Emirates have kept their friends close and the enemy to their extractive wealth closer. However, an examination of Al Jaber’s word reveal a truth, that there “is no science out there, or no scenario out there, that says that the phase-out of fossil fuel is what's going to achieve 1.5°C" targets of the Paris agreement.

Paired with an earlier statement by Al Jaber we can see what he means — “We need to phase out emissions from ALL sectors, including transportation, agriculture, heavy industry, and of course fossil fuels.” We cannot achieve a thriveable world by eliminating dirty fuels we burn and ignoring the dirty fuels we eat.

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbKXuoCjCfc

And we thought nobody at COP would promote agricultural solutions! The President of COP himself would like to see “other sectors” pull their weight, if only for relief of what he calls finger pointing at oil rich nations.

As our would-be climate heroes demand strong rhetoric about ending an industry they are consistently timid about axing “the other dirty fuel,” the one dear to “meat-rich nations.” Dr. Sailesh Rao of Climate Healers calls it “The Killing Machine” and at COP27 insisted that it must be dismantled even before the Burning Machine.

Excerpt from: https://www.facebook.com/climatehealers/videos/1354404218492083

Why are climate scientists and political scientists common, but political engineers and climate engineers are rarely spotlighted? Because, for better or for worse, we understand the world through stories, not facts. When our political stories reject our most inconvenient truths our accumulative crises seem less and less solvable. Engineers are the problem solvers of the world, and, for better or for worse, their solution designs never work on self- or mass deception.

Every revolutionary, whether of culture, style, music, philosophy, art, or science, presented concepts that didn’t fit into the prevailing paradigm. In the late ‘90s, electrical engineer Dr. Sailesh Rao captured minds with his story of not only stabilizing the worldwide web, but making it 10 times faster. But when it came to leading IEEE engineers to Gigabit Ethernet, corporate politics had to be kicked to the curb in order for the standard to work.

In the early ‘00s Dr. Rao became absorbed in a new story: climate change. He sold his tech company to Intel and turned his systemic thinking to a puzzle that revealed itself to be one of nine interrelated stories that humanity must solve to achieve a thriveable future.

In 2022 Dr. Rao attended his last COP summit, frustrated by climate leadership that was politically manacled to a dangerously incomplete palette of solutions.

This is an excerpt from his closing keynote for V-COP14, the fourteenth online Vegan Convergence of the People. It and other presentations can be viewed on the page.

The only thing better than is when the doughnut is !

ORIGINAL VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSCn3KW-Cas

We hope that as Kate Raworth challenges she also helps other economists make the connection between animal agriculture and unsustainable global finance — there is no when our collapses.

It’s hard not to notice that the obstacles to our crises always seem to be economic. Our national leaders see “nature” only as “resources,” and subvert their environmental departments to the objectives of extractive sectors that generate wealth. Even when regulations and policies find traction they tend to prioritize industrial solutions exclusive to billionaire developers and foster infinite “green growth” on our finite planet.

The development of the 9 Planetary Boundaries in 2009 was a critical framework to determine the “safe living space for humanity” and recognize that economies cannot survive when our natural systems fail. Still, the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals illustrated that all global development isn’t bad, it’s just poorly distributed.

When in 2017 Kate Raworth published Doughnut Economics: 7 Ways to Think Like A 21st Century Economist she combined these concepts — “overshoot” of the planetary boundaries and the “shortfall” recognized by the . The Oxford professor’s resulting model looked like a doughnut where we constrain our “outer” environmental impacts while elevating the most needful people groups out of the “doughnut hole.”

Food production and distribution figures heavily into both SDGs and the 9 planetary boundaries, exposing the perverse consumption of and industries.

Words are different when they come from the mouth of Thích Nhất Hạnh...we can't imagine even the most caustic anti-vegan troll accosting him for virtue signalling without feeling like they crossed a deeply troubling line.

We also can't imagine the late Thích Nhât Hanh having ever watched Earthlings or Dominion 🤯, as .wtf (Instagram handle for We The Free - Animal Rights) suggests. Actually, now we ARE imagining this gentle Buddhist monk and peace activist sitting beside us on the living room couch and feeling even more deeply apologetic about humanity and our habits.

It seems that Thích Nhât Hanh has witnessed enough undercover footage to say "There are films made about the suffering of animals. If you have watched these films, you will see we should eat and drink in such a way that can preserve compassion in our heart."

We appreciate that We The Free guide people to the www.3films.wtf site which spotlights three life-changing films (they currently spotlight Dominion, The Game Changers, and Seaspiracy).

If you have seen these movies let us know in the comments!

VegCerpts shares sound bites and social media-sized excerpts and directs viewers to the original source. If anyone knows of the full length recording of Thích Nhât Hanh share the link here!

We at VegCerpts have enjoyed the International Vegan Film Festival and have had three films selected by their judges, including an animated short at the first festival in 2018* and another animated short in the upcoming festival on November 16 in Toronto. The feature documentary, The Land of Ahimsa, was a selection in 2022.

We're exicted to see that an excerpt (our favorite word!) of The Animal Climate Controversy appears in the IVFF 2023 Trailer with the words "THOUGHT PROVOKING" written on it!

We credit the intellectual provocation to the host of the film, Gerard Wedderburn-Bisshop of the World Preservation Foundation, and the engineer whose research and analysis is featured, Dr. Sailesh Rao of Climate Healers.

Gerard Wedderburn-Bisshop is a former principal climate scientist of the Australian government who has posted a series of slideshows explaining the profound ecological harms of global animal agriculture.
