Last week we pitched our Christmas adventure project Lyra's Wish to M:brane an amazing convention and financing forum for kids content. We had three busy days full of interesting workshops, creative and inspiring pitches and promising meetings. Everything was online and tremendously well organised by a very helpful and knowledgeable team. We felt well taken care of and are full of gratitude for the opportunity offered to us. It was a blast!

A Blast from the past! About 5 years ago, in March 2016, writer Laura Winter Autorin and director Juliane Block - Film Director exchanged their notes on a preliminary budget for a new project, the feature film that became the mystery thriller 8 Remains - Movie with Maja Céline Probst and Gregory B. Waldis in the lead roles.

March 2016 also marks the birth of JBlockbuster as we know it today. ‘8 Remains’ kickstarted the collaboration between Juliane Block and Wolf-Peter Arand, who co-wrote the script. Juliane and Wolf were also introduced to executive producers Malcolm Winter and Monika Gergelova with whom they have since produced the psychological thriller 3 Lives and the horror drama The Curse of Hobbes House.

Our new movie “The Curse of Hobbes House” is out today in the UK for streaming and as DVD.

We are proud to be releasing it on this important date, International Women’s Day. Equality, diversity and empowerment are important issues to us. We believe the arts in general and filmmaking in particular play crucial roles in creating a better future for all of us. We’re trying to do our part by telling inspiring stories of empowerment and change. All this however means little without decisive action, which is why we’ve been making a point of gender balanced and diverse teams on all our projects and in the management structure of our company.

This is exactly why we found it quite fitting when our distributor 4Digital Media decided to put the UK release of our horror drama “The Curse of Hobbes House” on the 8th of March. We think the story of the sisters Jane and Jennifer Dormant fits the spirit of this important date. It’s a tale of empowerment, about putting one's differences aside and coming together to overcome horrendous obstacles. The “Only Unity Will Keep You Safe” - motif from the movie isn’t simply performative, but a message we truly believe in, something we hope will suffice to inspire the movie’s audience too.

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this movie happen. Thank you to every single person who takes the time and watches it.

It has been a long ride, but it was so worth it.

We are so proud of the radiant Georgie Fisher who just released her latest single “The Queen”, which is prominently featured in our upcoming horror drama The Curse of Hobbes House.

We’ve worked with Georgie in the past on our movies 8 Remains and 3 Lives for which she recorded the cracking tunes “Come my love” and “Dig Down Deep”. For TCoHH Georgie has returned and once again she delivers. “The Queen” is a hauntingly beautiful piece of music that resonates the spirit of our movie perfectly. We shot ‘The Curse of Hobbes House’ within 18 days in early 2019 at Kings Weston House in Bristol. Being an event location that’s highly in demand, it wasn’t an easy place to shoot due to everything going on around us. We had it all, from children’s birthdays to wakes, from student parties to business lunches and weddings. Our cast, crew and all our Undead right in the middle of it. As you can imagine this made for some pretty funny moments behind the scenes but also for some tough challenges.

Thanks to the hard work of our team and the amazing staff at KWH we overcame all those obstacles and created a movie we can all be proud of. After all, several reviews of TCoHH have highlighted how well our location played its part. And we agree, the dim, atmospheric lighting highlights KWH’s natural eeriness, providing our horror drama with the perfect visual backdrop.

Director Juliane Block - Film Director and writer Wolf-Peter Arand are currently working on developing a project called ‘Bendix Brodersen’, based on the novel by German author Alice Pantermüller, Autorin. It’s an adventure series involving dinosaurs and time travel. In 2020 we were lucky enough to receive funding from the Northern German Filmboard nordmedia for writing a first draft of the first two episodes and treatments for the following four episodes.

Together with Hannover based CGI-house and production company DAY FOR NIGHT GmbH we’re currently working towards development funding for a first teaser. The goal is to deliver a proof of concept that displays our vision and stirs up interest in the project. Hopefully this gets the series' production off the ground.

During the rainy summer of 2017 we shot the psychological thriller ‘3 Lives’. It was released in 2019 in the US. So far we haven’t been able to release the movie in our home territories of Germany and the UK, but this year things might change. So please, bare with us and cross your fingers. In the meantime here’s a photo from the cast and crew screening we held in August 2019 in Berlin.

It was in February 2019 when we took a stroll along the shores of Portishead, Bristol. It was our off-day during our shoot for The Curse of Hobbes House. The sun was out. The deadline for a Brexit deal was still 22 months away. We were wondering what the future would hold. The big question was whether we’d be able to keep on working as a trans-European company with one leg in the UK and the other in Germany.

We were all hoping for the best. Some of us even secretly hoped for some kind of miracle scenario in which the people of the UK would see the nationalist neo liberal lies of Brexit for what they are and would not split away.

Now, nearly two years later, the UK is out of the EU. It’s heartbreaking, stupid and unnecessary, but it is what it is. Lucky for the livelihoods of many millions of people, the politicians have agreed on a deal. The repercussions of it all will be with us for a long time. Still, we have hope that we’ll be able to be together again with our friends. Working, creating and taking a stroll along the shores of Portishead.

Like everyone else we’re hoping to get back to a certain degree of normality in 2021. In our case this means getting back on set and making movies again. We’ve got some exciting new projects in the pipelines.

One of them is called ‘Foster’, an original sci-fi thriller series set in Northern Germany. It’s a project we’ve been carrying with us for nearly 10 years now. In late 2020 we were lucky enough to receive script funding for it by the Northern German Filmboard nordmedia

Back in 2011 when director Block - Film Director shot the mockumentary ‘Kinks’, her second feature, she considered acting too. To test the waters Jules wrote herself into the movie, playing the nagging film producer Jay. It was an interesting experience and a formative time to say the least. Although acting was fun to try, Jules has stuck with working behind the camera ever since.

‘Kinks’ was the first of two JBlockbuster full features shot and produced in Malaysia with Virginia Kennedy. The first was ‘Emperor’, a gangster thriller released in 2008. It’s a bit spoofy, a bit cheeky and not too serious, but worth a watch.

‘Emperor’ and ‘Kinks’ are now available in Malaysia via the new VOD platform KiniDia. You’ll find them in their free to watch section. If you have the time, show those two gems some love.

Today is the day! We’re proud to announce that The Curse of Hobbes House is now officially available in the US on DVD and VOD. We’re very proud and excited and hope you’ll enjoy the movie. Also, we at JBlockbuster want to thank everyone involved, without you the movie wouldn’t have been possible.

When director/producer Juliane Block and writer/producer Wolf-Peter Arand came up with the idea for The Curse of Hobbes House they attempted to counter the worldwide push for division along racial, national and political lines by creating a progressive story about putting aside prejudice and coming together.

Juliane: “Crossing those imaginary lines of gender, race, nationality and religion, can be challenging, but art can be a vehicle to work through hard to navigate territory and complex contemporary issues, especially horror is great for that.”

Wolf: “If we can’t work out how to come together as a species, if we can’t solve our issues, we won’t survive. That’s how simple it is. That’s what ‘Only unity will keep you safe.’ means in a nutshell.”

We had an official Zombie Trainer on the set of The Curse of Hobbes House.

The Zomboss held workshops teaching the undead how to walk, how to stare, and how to make that scary screeching noise.

Another notable undead presence on set was Zombie Business – one of the most prolific zombie actors in the UK. It takes real work to be a scary zombie!

Kings Weston House with its grand halls, staircases, and galleries provided the perfect setting for our horror/drama The Curse of Hobbes House.

We’re not sure who snapped this very artistic angle of the grand central staircase, but we love it! Pictured are Makenna Guyler as Jennifer Dormant and Kevin Leslie as Nigel Thatcher getting into character before their scene.

We saw on instagram recently that Kings Weston are getting ready to strip these wooden bannisters back to the blonde wood that’s underneath this dark varnish, the way it was in the 19th century. We can’t wait to see the result!

We're SO proud of Waleed Elgadi for his success in the new film MOSUL streaming now on Netflix This Russo brothers film is incredibly brave, moving, and unique. It follows a rogue Iraqi squadron on their secret mission through war torn Iraq. MOSUL has been trending worldwide since its Netflix premiere last week, and watching it we can see why. It's really an incredible film.

'With so many Iraq War movies centered on white saviors and the like, MOSUL is a welcome breath of fresh air. This is an Iraq-set story with Iraqi characters told in Arabic.' - Decider

Watching Waleed's performance as Colonel Afsahani in MOSUL reminded us of what a brilliant actor he was to work with on the set of our film, The Curse of Hobbes House in which he plays Naser, the groundskeeper.

Congratulations to Waleed and all involved for this incredibly emotive and important film.

We're incredibly proud of this film and the stellar performances from our cast, a big thanks to B3 Biennale des bewegten Bildes and Screenbound Entertainment for adding us to the roster this year.

In Oct 2016, American filmmaker Antony DeGennaro was touring Cambodia. They stumbled upon the Siem Reap War Museum. It was there he met the charismatic tour guide, Moun Sinath, The Cat. Moun noticed Antony shooting video and shouted "Lucky boy. Make a video and tell the world!" Moun, a native Cambodian, survived decades of war, land mines and fighting the Khmer Rouge in the killing fields.
