Sheriff Funkhouser would like to congratulate Rachel Hines on being awarded one of the VSI Scholarships to further her education.

The Virginia Sheriffs’ Scholarship program was established to provide an opportunity for young people across Virginia to pursue an education in criminal justice. Accordingly, the Board of Directors has established the application process for students to receive scholarships to assist in their educational endeavors. The scholarships are available only to students in jurisdictions where sheriffs participated in scholarship fundraising efforts. This program is limited to students attending Virginia colleges and universities.

Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute Awards 55 Scholarships

~VSI is pleased to provide educational support across Virginia~

Richmond, VA -- The Virginia Sheriffs' Institute (VSI) is pleased to announce the awarding of 55 scholarships totaling $54,000 to deserving individuals across the Commonwealth. These scholarships support individuals pursuing a college degree in criminal justice while attending a Virginia college or university. Full-time students are awarded $1,000 scholarships; part-time students are awarded $500 scholarships.

"VSI is supported by contributions of its members -- individuals, businesses and organizations of all types. I would like to thank those who have been supporters over the years and all who have recently joined VSI as associate and business members," said Pittsylvania County Sheriff Michael W. Taylor, President of the Virginia Sheriffs' Institute. “Thanks to your continued generosity, this scholarship program is a tremendous success.”

The Virginia Sheriffs' Institute is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization established by Virginia sheriffs, which provides training and education to the members of the VSI, including sheriffs and deputy sheriffs across Virginia, on issues relating to management, crime prevention, and other areas of public safety.

All Virginia citizens are eligible to become members of the VSI upon invitation from their local sheriff.
"The sheriffs and their citizen supporters around Virginia are the reason for the success of this program," said John W. Jones, Executive Director of the Virginia Sheriffs' Institute. "Currently, we have over 31,000 associate and business members of the VSI. We are extremely proud and grateful for all of our associate and business members as well as our training and educational programs that help make Virginia a safer place in which to live."

VMI, in collaboration with Virginia Tech, held a 12-week internship recently for high school students, funded by a workforce development grant from the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative. The grant seeks to build a pipeline of mentorship in which graduate students from Virginia Tech — with more knowledge and experience on cyber security topics — guide VMI cadets, and in turn cadets aid local high school students.

The goal of the internship is to teach participating high school students how to develop practical hardware, software, and cybersecurity skills through in-person practical learning and self-paced online training. Read more: https://bit.ly/VMICCIInternProgram.
