Feels great to be able to keep it real on this page and being able to reflect on the past year where this page grew so much and I learned so much, met many of you (which I didnโt expect to!) and grew as a human being, a diver, a friend and a freelancer.

So this happened last week...
After a month out of the water (weโll talk about the importance of scooter safety another day), I went for my first dive, and what did I get the next day?
The one thing a scuba diver never wants to hear, Decompression Sickness (DCS or โThe Bends.โ)
Luckily, it was a mild case of skin bends (where a rash forms on your skin), and Iโm doing well again now.
Now I know youโre all wondering, โWHAT HAPPENED?!โ
This week after the incident, I was called a lousy diver, told it was expected as a videographer, but most importantly, was misdiagnosed by my fellow dive professionals.
DCS can be dramatic and scary, and this misdiagnosis tells me how little we all want to talk about โtabooโ topics like this.
So rather than hide what happened, Iโm here to spread awareness rather than shame and fear.
Talking about it, showing what it looks like, and being open and honest about it - especially in remote locations like mine - could help someone overcome this fear and be faster to react by knowing what to expect and look for.
It should be normalised, even to students, and encouraged to ask questions and see pictures to know what to look for in fellow dive buddies if the situation arises.
So what happened to me? The truth is, I do not know the exact cause. Most likely a combination of dehydration, fatigue and a dive profile only a photographer looking after two groups underwater would understand.
Could I have done a few things differently? Sure, but most of us as dive professionals (the highest risk category btw) have been guilty of diving while doing one of the three things I listed above.
Then as with all bad situations, thereโs a silver lining. I know how it feels and can sympathise with anyone in the future who goes through it, understand what skin rashes to look for when someone is presenting with a possible case and know what action to take in these situations.

As you guys know I am a scuba diver, what you guys donโt know is that I was scared for so long to try freediving and now I am looking to do my level 1 freediving course and I am practicing slowly yo hold my breath and understand my body underwater !
On the first clip at the end before it cuts back to the sharks, I go up because I loose my breath and @oceans_below who filmed this clip was laughing so much I can still hear her ๐ it would have been such a perfect clip thatโs why it was so funny I came up and said sorry ๐๐๐
