Redistricting in Alabama leads to new legal battle over minority representation.
The fight over redistricting Alabama’s congressional map continues as the state legislature approved new district boundaries that are now being challenged in federal court. Civil rights groups argue the Republican-drawn map does not properly create a second district where Black voters have a real opportunity to elect their preferred candidate, as mandated by the courts. At issue is whether the map complies with the Voting Rights Act, or if more changes are needed to provide fair representation. The outcome of this high-stakes case could impact minority voting rights and control of Congress in 2024. In this video, we break down the continuing redistricting battle and what it means for political power in Alabama and beyond. Also see this Associated Press article for more details on the case, and this news report on reactions from lawmakers and advocacy groups.
