Detective Jackie Nichols with the Asotin County Sheriff Department in Washington State wrote this proposal to change the DNA law and the how this change could make CODIS and other similar data bases a more powerful tool for law enforcement. The laws that are in place now have not caught up to the advances of forensic science. The steps to compare DNA of a possible suspect to the forensic evidence found on / or near a victim is tedious and works in the perpetrator’s favor and not the victim. The backlog of cold cases is ever growing and until changes in DNA laws happen the backlog will continue to grow, this means the victims do not get the justice they deserve and the families and friends of these victims are left not having answers as to what happened to the ones they loved.
