FILM SPOTLIGHT: Ghosts of Joe Henry

The Dempster (Joe Henry) Highway, in the Yukon, is the only road in Canada that crosses the Arctic Circle. It is the meeting of a man-made entity and some of the most isolated landscapes on the planet.

Locally, it is often referred to as “The Joe Henry Highway” in honour of Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Elder Joe Henry, who was instrumental in the construction of the highway that passes through their traditional lands. Film by Dan Sokolowski.

Experience Canada's untouched wild beauty by river in the free short film Like A River.

Like a River is a short film that explores the metaphor "grief is like a river."

Between 1998 and 2000, Erin McKnight paddled 9000 km across Canada to raise awareness about mental illness. What she didn't expect was how the expedition would bring up memories of her mother, who took her own life when Erin was nine years old. The river journey became a catalyst and useful metaphor for understanding her grief around her mother's death.

"This is a story about how the journeys we take can take us to a place that is not on any map. Although it is my story, I believe it speaks to the universal experience of grief and our unique quest for identity and self-fulfillment. It's a story that will hopefully give people the courage to share their own stories, especially the ones that are the hardest to tell." - filmmaker Erin McKnight

Watch the story of the dramatic recovery of the Fortymile Caribou herd of Alaska and Yukon.

From numbers of over 600,000 in 1920 to only 4,000 in 1970, the herd was well on its way to extinction.

Through local efforts, the Fortymile population has come back to 84,000 caribou.

Follow filmmaker Allan Code over the course of a year through the remote wilderness of North Yukon and Alaska as he traces the story of the herd's survival and how traditional knowledge and science saved the herd from near extinction.

This feature film is available for rent for just $3.99 on ALFF Online.

Show Me What You Care About explores notions of connection and belonging by asking the question, 'What do you care about?' In an effort to explore what community and connection means in an urban environment, Brianne Nettelfield and Naomi Mark set out to find what people care about and why those things matter in the broader context.

From mental health in the trans community to food security and communication, Show Me What You Care About threads together the stories of six Vancouverites to find that community is built from more than the simple sharing of a location – community is built through the connections we share with one another, ourselves and how they are manifested through the things we care about.
